Real Man's 4WD Track

15 жыл бұрынA Land Rover Defender drives up a "Real Man's" 4WD track.
One brave soul attempted it in a Landcruiser but failed before even getting both sets of wheels on the ramp. He is currently at home trying to fix his exhaust.
The video was taken at the Maitland 4WD & Camping Show 2009 and the ramp is 5.5M above the ground.
The majority of the drive is done with the driver seeing nothing but sky.

I built yard ramps only going to standard dock height and they were 24’ long. Man the first couple times up them was scary enough for me

The new defender could probably do that obstacle too but it fails some offroad because the suspension travel is extremely short.

For those who don't know how climbing in a 4wd works.. backing down was the part with potential to be the most disastrous. Much like humans, 4wd vehicles are much better at climbing up steep inclines than getting back down.

I worked as a sales consultant for my local automotive dealership...I had the opportunity to "test drive" a 2013 Ford 4x4...roll cage..skid plates..reinforced panels 6.5 litter.. Monster tires which gave me 3'8" of clearance...crazeeeeey clearance....and waterproof...snorkel intake...had that unit "underwater".....for real 😳.....good times

Well new one's have locking diffs, swaybar disconnect, smart offroad cruise control plus they are luxurious. So they are even better in offroad than old ones.

@@dkdanis1340 and then the computer fucks up or a sencor goes out. Old offroad cars are better, less stuff to break. also the new rovers don't have live axle which mens less articulation and you can't put very big tires on it without massivley expensive independant lift kits.

@@floppychzcake7936 it can still drive without sertain sensors and even old defenders have modern engines with ecu and sensors. New one already has a lot of articulation and companies will come out with lift system that keeps stock components.

This isn't a "real man's" anything. It's a safe little test to see whether you have a decent clutch and sticky tires. 2WD can do this too; I think an old air-cooled VW Beetle could do it. Might need a lower ring gear to make it happen, might not. Assigning "real man" labels to things is only a writer's trick, and it's only a label. The things that you do that haven't been labeled however are much more revealing, and the real men don't give a shit whether other people think they're real men or not.

Well, my highlander doesn't have the approach angle to even start that ascent. And I don't think there's enough space in a beetle to get a low enough ratio for that kind of climb. ~65ft-lbs (old beetle) is about what you put on a socket wrench at any given time.

idrivea911 Only way to know for sure would be to try it. I don't have an old Beetle - wish I did - but I'd give it a whirl in my pickup. Fresh clutch, torquey straight-4 and a decent low gear. Probably would drag the tail though.

Ignacio Díaz Sorry...just the opposite to me. Defender = family station wagon. I'm sure the defender has a large following somewhere (but not here)Over here it is viewed as a yuppie car that rich kids borrow from their fathers to go on a weekend ski trip. As with any vehicle, it has it's good and bad points. (I actually like them, we used them exclusively in Africa while on safari) But...it would never be able to reach hunting areas and conditions I take my Rubicon into, nor would I want to take such an expensive vehicle into an area like that and risk damage. Rover makes a great truck. But IMO I can buy three Jeeps for the cost of one Rover, and go more places with it.
