That’s why Oda Nabunaga hates Christmas and the military monks of mt. Hie (?) and the yamabushi of any surrounding temples. They burned the temples and monks to the ground. The survivors I love them.. it’s because of scholars like you and your entire crew and also my love of Budo, that this entire thing is just awesome. An excellent guest that you have been very knowledgeable. I love this.

I think the very nature of the human has always begged, borrowed, and stolen things from many different things around the globe, this is what i find fascinating about Japanese culture. Japan is very good at excepting another idea or culture and making it a very Japanese thing or way.

Good info, love the way yall break it down. I really like the deep dive in to past cultures and religions. Personally I'm a pagan of the indo-european type. I can see some of the similarities to the samurai, and for sure the Indian influence. Love how they live by a code of honor, something missing today. Also love how you touch into the magic, and type of magic that was used. Keep up the great work!

What about Shugendo and Shingon Buddhism? As I understand Shinobi were associated with esoteric Buddhism, and the rigorous pilgrimages of the yamabushi shugenja factored greatly into the endurance aspects of their training. Furthermore the kuji rituals are referenced in Shugendo.

All ancient religions believed in reincarnation. Even earlier Christianity did. Zen is basically Chan Buddhism from China. Bodhi Dharma was the one that brought that style of Buddhism to China. The Shaolin temple was the first Buddhist monastery. The two great vehicles of Buddhism, have been adopted all over the world. There is no dought that the Shinobi practiced Zen. The high power of concentration is totally attainable using Zen Buddhism techniques. Im sure they practiced some form of it.

Well, not to be a nerd, but I think it was Origen that may have floated ideas about pre-existence of the soul and *possibly* reincarnation. No other early Christian theologian that I know of confessed this, aside from gnostic sectarians.

2:56 Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE by the missionary Mahinda, who was the son of the Indian Emperor Ashoka. On the other hand, Buddhism was introduced to Tibet in the 7th century CE, several centuries after it had already been established in Sri Lanka and other regions. Theravada Buddhism is the oldest surviving branch of Buddhism and is prevalent in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. Not the other way around.
@TadaGenji
@TadaGenji 2 ай бұрын
Perhaps my wording was confusing--- but to be clear, what I said was that Sri Lankan Buddhism came from "Indian Buddhism" --- not from Tibet. When discussing Indian Buddhism/Far East Buddhism, you essentially clump Sri Lankan and Tibetan together because they both come from the same root source.. the complex of "Indian Buddhism". However, I must point out that the idea that Theravada Buddhism is the oldest surviving branch of Buddhism is not really true. While Theravada is rooted firmly in the tradition of the Sthavira branch, many different schools and reformations took place between the original Sthavira and the Theravada of the present day. Many of those reformations and schools took place alongside of many other surviving schools. Another good source to understand this is to compare and contrast the Theravada Vinaya and the Mulasarvastivada Vinaya. But, having said this, regardless of the ongoing debate of "who is the oldest school" ---- I never said that Sri Lankan Buddhist came from Tibet. I said that Sri Lankan Buddhism came from Indian Buddhism (as a grouping), especially as opposed to "Far East Buddhism".
@Jim58223
@Jim58223 2 ай бұрын
@@TadaGenjiYea might be the way you worded it, it makes it sound like the Indian and Tibetan and other buddhism become Sri Lankan Buddhism and other forms. It would be accurate if it was just Indian buddhism. Since Tibetan buddhism comes much later. Thanks.

I agree wholeheartedly that the interest in the Samurai, and the Ninja is waining. It was not like it was in the 1980s. As someone trying to run a martial arts school teaching these arts, I have seen a huge downturn in students. Yet is it is a shame as people are missing so much. Unfortunately the modern organisations such as the Bujinkan have not helped at all.

My instructor in Kung Fu San Soo, Weston Vermillion, here in Olympia, WA...U.S.A. suggested that much of this Warrior religion/spirituality/ethos originates with the Spartan culture. Of course, there is much talk of a pre-existing advanced globe spanning civilization before a massive cataclysm, many of these practices may have originated from there.

Ancient Greeks inherited from the even more ancient Proto-Indo-European Koryos platoons. The most recent examples of their martial excellence, inherited from a tradition tens of thousands of years old, maybe longer, is the Berserker.

I could talk about religion in historical Japan for days but I'll keep my comment largely focussed on this one point. In the Tale of the Heike 平家物語, the premier samurai epic, they have a clear favoritism for Pure Land Buddhism with a secondary emphasis on "Shinto." However, shinobi were much later in history than the Tale of the Heike, and slightly earlier than Zen's big break in Japan. Also, I've already translated several very interesting stories about Onmyoji from the Heian Period that might be of interest. I was particularly surprised at how much the magic they used was concealment and invisibility.

After Animism the first religious belief that worshipped a male sky god is traced back to Indo-Europe (Ukraine) and they travelled in various directions setting in India, Scandinavia, Greece, Germany and basically all over Europe. Every religion comes from this including Hinduism, Greek mythology, norse, all pagan, and Christianity.

Why would akban take his students to a Buddhist shrine when he’s Israeli and most likely Jewish or Hebrew. You already established that there was a high probability that some ninja were practicing Christians meaning that there’s no specific religion that is practiced by all ninja. All ninja schools did not practice the same skills. Why they all follow the same religious beliefs. It’s fine to know the history but you can’t expect people to start doing rituals that they don’t believe in. Just saying.

@@AntonyCummins I think it’s obvious that most western practitioners of Asian or, in this case, Japanese martial arts focus on what is useful and disregard the rest. It’s similar to why you left the bujinkan. You saw the parts that made sense but also acknowledged that a lot of it was just foolishness. I can agree with continuing things like traditional dojo etiquette to help instill discipline but things like animal sacrifices and blood drinking should be left to organizations that are already satanic to begin with. Believe it or not there are already dojo’s that are openly satanic and do teach magic rituals. To each their own but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Sadly it's becoming very popular nowadays . Not just in martial arts, in my home town( we are a former communist country) a lot of young people and not just them are into some sort of magic and/or satanism. What I find interesting is that most of those people are weak characters and just want shortcuts in life . @@kuji-in-deed369
