The video shows and explains who are the real historic figures who appear in Babylon Berlin (buy Volker Kutscher's Babylon Berlin here: amzn.to/3oMWmKt - affiliate link) as characters or as people who inspired some Babylon Berlin characters. It has no pretense of being exhaustive but I hope it is informative. The series is inspired by the crime books series written by Volker Kutscher.

That's a very fine compilation. However, there is a major historical person who should be mentioned: 'General Major Seegers', the elderly officer who secretly leads the forbidden German re-armaments plans. This figure is a clear reference to General Hans von Seeckt, Commander in Chief of the army of the Weimar Republic. Numerous plot lines in Babylon Berlin are direct references to the real life actions of Von Seeckt: Secret joint military development with the Soviet Union; Lufthansa involved in establishing an illegal airforce; close collaboration with German industry leaders as well as his Nazi sympathies. Even the actor Ernst Stötzner, who play 'Seegers' in the series looks a lot like him...., though that could be the moustache.

The photo next to Adenauer shows Gereons father according to the film and not Adenauer himself. Gereons father asked and sent him from Cologne to Berlin to find a promiscutive movie from Adenauer before the reelection as mayor of Cologne. But is wasn‘t Adenauer, it was himself. The reason why Gereon didn‘t return to Cologne.

I liked the analysis but I don't follow you at all on the comparison of Gereon Rath to Erich Kästner. The only things they had in common were their year of birth, their short stint with the military (and even there, Gereon picked up major trauma at the Front whereas Kästner didn't) and both were born outside Berlin. Everything else was different about them. Kästner was a journalist and writer, even poet, whereas Gereon was draughted as a tough policeman initially with the vice squad, a job Kästner wouldn't have touched with a bargepole. Religious affiliation, political awareness, region or dialect of origin...all totally different....
@elithefinebookslover1467

And both lived in Berlin in the same years and both had somehow something to do with crime and both were not Nazis but didn’t leave Berlin or join the resistance. I never claimed there were millions of similarities, but he Author of the books himself made this comparison to explain Rath’s way of thinking, there were millions of people of those years he could have mentioned and yet he specifically picked Kastner, which means he thought of kastner while creating the character of Rath and made him a 1899 man after Kastner, so i included it.
@notroll1279
@notroll1279 3 жыл бұрын
@@elithefinebookslover1467 Well, you dedicated the longest of your chapters to this flawed comparison...and please, do tell me what Kästner had to do with crime.
@elithefinebookslover1467
@elithefinebookslover1467 3 жыл бұрын
@@notroll1279 yes because this is my channel and I thought that telling kastner’s story would help people understand why the Author (not me! ) made this comparison... and I think it did. The Author and he alone knows from whom he took his inspiration in creating Rath and he mentioned Kastner, so the point is settled, regardless of you agreeing with him or not. Out of all the jobs, Kastner wrote child detective fiction set in contemporary Berlin. I found it a nice coincidence to be honest. It’s a ‘parallel’? No, but it’s a curious coincidence and who knows maybe the Author of the books thought it funny too. Anyway, you are free to make a video in your own channel explaining that you know Rath better than the man who created him and criticizing his choice of mentioning Kastner in connection to Rath. To each their own.
@notroll1279
@notroll1279 3 жыл бұрын
@@elithefinebookslover1467 I don't claim to know Rath better than the author (Thanks for making that hilarious suggestion 😀😀😀) but chances are I have a little more respect for Erich Kästner than he does.

You can find 3 notorious female officers during the Weimar era in the german Wikipedia: - Josefine Erkens (1889-1974), she was fired from her job when the Nazis came to power but survived the war. Her two aides, female officers Therese Dopfer and Maria Fischer, commited suicide toghether in 1931. - Martha Mosse (1884-1977) was fired from the Polizei for being jewish and sent to a concentration camp. She survived the Holocaust and re-joined the Berlin Police until 1953, retiring as a traffic officer. - Friedrike Wieking (1891-1958), who collaborated with the Nazis, served as a female prison director during the war. Captured by the Soviets until 1950, she lived the rest of her life with her girlfriend.

Hi thanks a lot for watching. Maybe you're talking about the books? I haven't read them so you might be right about them being set in 1919. As for the series, though, it's 1929 not 1919. Season 3 ends in 1929 with the bank crisis and the three seasons don't cover 10 years of german history, it's barely a year since Rath arrived in Berlin: the three series cover about 1 year so Season 1 starts in 1929. Basically the Weimar republic started in 1918 but the series starts years later (as you can infer from the fact that the Weimar republic was well established at the beginning of the series, which would be impossible in 1919; also the political context is not the one you would see in 1919). Thanks for your imput, I hope you liked the video.
