@mepmh Idk what exactly plumbing is like, but in Electrical you can't have your own company until you're a master. It takes a few years to reach journeyman and several more to become a master. "Start your own business" is not currently helpful advice for someone beginning an apprenticeship. They should get tips about getting through the apprenticeship or reaching journeyman

Same here. I'm in the business to make money but not dishonestly. And those customers will tell all their friends who you are, you will make the money up elsewhere. It always amazed me when people's business model was just to make money however they can. It never works out in the long run. You see it with auto mechanics as well. I can't tell you the amount of times I've been giving a second opinion to someone who was told they need a new water heater and it's something as simple as a packing nut dripping or an element needs to be replaced. Shameful.

In my neck of the woods, everything out to the city's main in the center of the street is the customer's responsibility. Cutting up concrete city streets gets spendy right quick. So the goal is to luck out and only have to replace the main from the house to the curb. But on the potable side, the city owns and maintains up to the disconnect at the edge of the right-of-way. Working in multiple jurisdictions and with multiple utilities can be quite the challenge knowing who has to do what where. But dang, you'd better know before you even step foot out of the truck. (I cleaned up my use of colorful metaphors because I know that Roger has such virtuous virgin ears.)

To!d me I would be fired if I didn't do it his way. Said ok but need it in writing and signed in front of two witnesses because I would be taking it to the electrical unit of our big city L&I to protect myself. I had an electrical license from the city. He would never but illegal jobs in writing and a!ways backed down. He wanted one the two plumbers that had plumbing license to run a long floor drain that they refused because of too far from think they stated vent line. He got a mechanic to install the pipe and from day one drain was slow to remove water from nightly hose down. He tried to hang the mechanic but the two plumbers told him off.

known a lot of men like that plumber over the years who think that just because they did it or said it then it's right. His arrogance of being "a licensed plumber" somehow put him way up on a level higher than everyone else around him. These kind of people don't have the ability to stop and think that their "license" doesn't actually give them any "power" or say so over anything it just says they are supposedly been taught how to screw and glue two pieces of pipe together and lay it correctly in a trench when shown a blue print. However, it seems that piece of paper to some people is like a college degree, it removes all forms of common sense!

To be fair to the plumber, I would have made the same mistake. It depends on where the problem was but I’ve never seen a county or municipality that went that far. The farthest I’ve seen is when there’s a public sidewalk which is an easement and they’ll go to the other side of it. So if the issue was right past that sidewalk, I never would have thought to call the city. That’s the only thing on his side. Everything else he does is wrong on every level. I’ve been cussed out by customers and gc’s. It’s a different dynamic but I just walk away and say as soon as you’re willing to be civil I’ll come back and talk. I’ve been badmouthed and it sucks because sometimes you have to take it. I don’t think the homeowner or the main city guy acted right either. Don’t yell back just tell him to leave until he calms down. Ignoring the viral aspect of this, this guy just shot himself in the foot. I’ve worked in a small town and a city and it pays to have good relationships with the city. For all work he does there in the future that involves the city, his name is mud. On top of that I don’t know how he has a successful business in the first place if he’s this bad at controlling emotions.

You know what this guy's attitude There's no way he can pick up the phone and ask anybody at the county to step up if he needs something. I'm not a plumber but I had a family member once that had a closing scheduled for a Monday. On the Friday prior the VA inspector came by and found out they had just the week before run City sewer through the area. Before they can close they had to change over from septic to City sewer. Had to have it done by Monday morning. Have a friend who owns a trackhoe and installs manholes. Bought some 4-in pipe. Went to a house we didn't own. Laid the pipe down the front yard. Luckily the utility markings were still there from when they installed the sewer. I knew the city inspector so I called him at home on Saturday after we finished. We left the trench open so he can see it. He came by on Sunday after church signed. The approval left it under a rock on the front porch. They were able to close with that approval. It's amazing how much you can get done when you get along with people. Gave my buddy a hundred bucks for the use of the excavator and a case of beer for helping. And yes our installation met code. That's why we left the trench open for the inspector because we figured he'd call us if something was wrong but it was fine.

To top it off, it's all back pitched, this dude seems to be more about the money than doing the right job. It's one more thing that is unfortunately not uncommon in our trade as well theses days. They are called, hit and run plumbers, they are all about the buck, not the work. They make us all look bad. F -this guy if he is truly that type, hope he goes out of business.

That dude was big mad, i worked for a hot head like that once, every day i felt like i was walking on eggshells, and he would just blow up over the most rediculous things, i left that job to seek better treatment and a big bonus out of that decision is my mental health is doing better, i got trained properly and advanced to get my colorado journeymen license so now im making more money to provide for my family

Just wanted to add on to my comment that even though i was not a good fit for that company, i still need to credit my old boss and his company for what they did do and i would still not be the plumber i am today if i didnt get my start with his company

As a company owner, I'm embarrassed for that company owner. I've had my share of disagreements with inspectors, sometimes I was right and sometimes I was wrong, but I would never even think of acting like that, especially on a public street with a customer and inspectors there. Calm, civil discussion about the code (not money or feelings) is all you need to work everything out. He freaked out because he cares more about money than he does about making sure things are right for the customer.

Based on what you’re saying I would believe you have not done a lot of snaking. It’s not easy at all to know your at the curb when working inside a home pulling a toilet and sending the cable out.

This guy might know everything forward, backward, and sideways; however, none of that matters because he is incapable of negotiating. In a situation where there is some conflict, his actions increase the tension and the situation escalates. He is in fact a liability.

This place was trying to pull a fast one. The technician lied, told the customer the line was broken on his side. Sold a job to fix the entire building sewer and got caught up by the inspector telling the customer he could have got the job for free. I don’t blame the owner cause at this point you have to save face for your company . I would fire the technician because obviously he’s a con artist

In this country so many times "management" is their own worst enemy. Their greed, arrogance, and "Right or wrong do what I say" attitude. Being able to use a bull whip is NOT a qualification for a supervisor. And the workers underneath them are thinking " I gotta find a job somewhere else, because they are gonna run the company into the ground, and I won't have a job anyways".

flat and backfall sucks I dont know about where property line is etc. but a lot of sewer authorities wont take responceability for the lateral even in the street We usually go all the way to the curb or close plus its common that we dont have a clean out at the PL but It really depends where you are city and countys are differant even in the same state

I've had two call backs in 26 years and was not at fault. One was a garbage disposal something was hung in the spinners...we replaced it with a new one and because she had done this in the past she was told that if we find something in it u will b charged with a new one no labor costs. It had a penny in it. The other was someone saying they see something in their drain when they looked down into the drain of K. S. The customer was charged gas money only because they were seeing the reflection of the basket strainer in the trap of the kitchen sink.

This one is crazy as an NC licensed plumber. This particular county owns way up to the house. In some shots you can see where the utilities are on the property its way far up off the street. But if you work around this place you gotta know
