Oh this one was fun with a capital F! A 123bhp (not 160) hot hatch with a lovely noise emanating from its engine bay. Bought by ‪@ChopsGarage‬ for a bit of track-based fun, it seems this little funster delivered.

I like the word "Hotchback". My dad has a 2016 Sport. He's 80. Practical. Good crash protection for its size. Not too big for him to struggle with parking and town. Relatively economical. Peppy enough. Long enough legs on a higher milage trip. Good headlights. High enough seats so him and my mom can board and alight without discomfort. Looks pretty in metallic blue. Good brakes. Has a satnav to help for him. The only things he doesn't like is a lack of rear visibility when parking and he doesn't find it as easy to judge in gaps as his previous car, a 1996 Vectra 1.6.

Awesome review Ian. Reminds me of my Fiesta Zetec. That was slow but just such a blast. Driving from Kendal to Lancaster for work is an awesome driving memory. I miss the raw thrills you get from cars like this. Power isn't everything. It's the noise, feeling of speed and connection to the road that makes it so exciting. 🙂

Have owned a 2014 1.2 Swift for the last 6 years. 55 mpg, £30 per Year tax, cheap to maintain, coming up to 100k miles without a snag, by far the most reliable car I have ever owned. (Makes up for my 3.7 Petrol Jeep Cherokee "Sunday Car" 😂)

I always liked these little cars. I've driven both this version and the following generation. Both of them were great little cars to drive. I nearly bought the 2nd version but plumped for an Abarth 595. It was a tricky choice! I really like the current model so maybe one day I'll own one!

You're driving this properly! At 7:25, thats what I've been trying to get James to do! Between mother and I, we've had 7 Swifts of various guises (this generation and later) and even the non Sport were revvy and sounded fantastic. The later car mentioned above (ZC32) takes the creature comforts and refinement (same engine, 6 speed 'box and 136 bhp) to the next level, without losing out on the fun. Also, the later cars from around August 2007, they raised the rev limit to 7,100 rpm.

Very nice car, Ian. That generation. swift was a very large step ahead over the previous generation. Love the notes you make about rear wipers. In the same vein, the old Volvo 240 has an excellent rear wiper. The controls are on the right lever which also holds the control of the rear wiper. Our 81 had a single speed rear wiper and wash controls. On my 90 240, the rear wiper control is on the wiper control column on a 3 position sliding switch. The wipers are full on or will only wipe at a 7 second interval. The wash is on the end of the wiper lever. If your fingers are long enough, all three controls can be done independently and by using your finger to touch the screen.

Our household runs a 64 plate 1.2 Swift. Great handling car. Not over powered so when you have an appropriate 'Hoon' moment you're not really in trouble speed limit wise but you still get loadsasmiles. Good review Ian. I took a Swift Sport for a test drive on Anglesey about 10 years ago. I felt the driving position was a little too high for a sporty car and it needed a sixth gear, which I think the Swift got later in its life.

I will always champion these little cars - this generation of Swift onwards are the best small 3-door hatch on the market all things considered. They're a riot to drive, fantastically packaged, pretty, interesting and the 'Sport' trim actually means something unlike 99% of cars. I drove a brand new 1.0 Boosterjet (3 cylinder turbo) Swift recently and I was absolutely blown away by it. I'm certain I will be looking to buy one at some point in the near future.

I owned one of these for a few years. I've owned much more powerful stuff than this, and yet I always think back to how much I loved this car. Yeah it's a tad noisy, the ride is a bit jumpy, and it's not exactly fast....but find a twisty road and it is absolutely ludicrous fun. I could tear round corners with no trouble whatsoever. The peddles are really well balanced as well and the steering was heavy and so you got some nice feedback. I really do miss it.

I bought a brand new 15 plate 1.2 Swift and was fairly happy with it for about a year, until by chance I spotted a 62 reg Mini Cooper for sale and fell in love with it on the spot. I swapped the Swift for it and never looked back. The Mini is long gone now too, although I do hanker after it now and again. I currently drive a boring a f Kia 1.25 Picanto, but next year I'm looking to swap it for something a little more exciting. Not a Swift Sport though.

The A399 from South Molton to Brayford and then on to Combe Martin is one of the best roads in the uk IMHO. So varied with lots of challenging technical sections, sections which seem to repeat themselves and some long straight bits. Great in most cars. Best avoided for most of the summer but epic when quiet. Don't shout about it or it will get spoiled with low speed limits. Only willing to share this with Hubnutters 😉

Well nice ride, reliable and all Sports are made in Japan, not in Hungary. I used to have a 1.6 GLX saloon Swift as my first car, it was 850 kg, and 92 bhp. quite fast, I had it for about 14 years, it just rusted away I guess sold in in 2009 and it drove around till 2012. I had a ZC32S for about 4 years and did a lot of miles in it. Can absolutely recommend for the fun factor, a total ball to drive. Fuel economy is very good, 40+ easily achieved if you can resist caning everywhere. Downsides are parts availability and cost, and insurance is pretty expensive for the performance (likely due to the parts cost and availability!).

my dad had a 1,5 vvt from 2005 - bought it new, and drove it to 330.000 kms, with absolutely the bare minimum of servicing, the only thing it was bad on it were the front wishbones, the bushings died after 60k kms at the most. oh and a radiator that packed up which he thought was a headgasket, new headgasket fitted at 160k kms - the bores looked like new...

I much prefer having something like this where you can actually find the limit within safe speeds and all of the power can be enjoyed over something much more powerful

Fiat 500 Abarth. You *need* to drive one. More giggling & outright laughter will ensue than is healthy.
