RA goes beyond the sunshine and the sprawl to explore LA's underground scene.
LA's reputation precedes itself. Around the world, Hollywood looms large, presenting America's second-biggest city as a land of palm trees, red carpets and celebrities. This couldn't be further than the truth. As Mahssa Taghinia of Mount Analog puts it, LA is a "geographical memoir, there's no truth or falsehood really, everybody's idea of LA is very personal." There is an escapist bent to the place, and many artists find a small patch of paradise to hole up and work on music.
Of course, that lifestyle and the so-called "Autopia," criss-crossed by freeways inhabited by single-driver cars, can be incredibly isolating. People cling to the communities fostered by record stores, radio stations and raves. The endless expanse of the city provides warehouse space for promoters pushed underground by a 2 AM curfew. Since the early '90s, artists from around the world have flown to LA every weekend to play back-alley spots whose locations remain unannounced until a few hours before the party starts. The word-of-mouth aspect of these events reflects a large trend in the city: so much of what LA has to offer happens behind closed doors. Our latest Real Scenes film tries to take you there, documenting a scene as thriving as it is elusive.

It's so great to see Los Angeles get some love for its music scene. I've been here awhile and due to lifestyle changes don't get to experience musical art the way I used to... So I didn't even know about Dublab. So thanks for making this about our city, thanks for showing LA love and thanks for continuing this series... I love it.

I remember LA in 93-97 during the height of Rave culture...it was like any big city that had mega raves, small raves, and the undergrounds. Frankly LA was amazing and I went to raves in NYC, San Fran, and Chicago. Each had its own spirit but the one thing that made LA different from the rest of them were the badass Desert Raves thrown by the Moontribe! Those were the spirit of real raves.

just spent 6 months in LA and here are some pro tips/events/promoters not mentioned in this documentary: for house & techno check out made to move in chinatown, low, into the woods, incognito, & lights down low. for jungle/dnb (which is actually massive in LA) check out big booty bass, hidden jungle, lostkawz, concrete jungle, respect, drumslinga, and xcellerated. surely i'm missing a bunch more. other cool parties can be found at 19hz dot info and restless nites. enjoy!

you got one shot in extremely familiar with, and it's right on E Cesar Chavez in Boyle Heights (where the king taco is). i've been raised on the other side of the scene, i was born into a non-musical and poor family. it's weird seeing documentaries like these because i am not familiar with these images of LA. this isn't my LA. and that's awesome - to a degree. i wish there was more representation for the other side of downtown, in East LA, Montebello, Monterey Park, etc. I don't even know what's going on over here, but i'd love to find out more and help make waves for my LA. it's pretty wonderful that everyone has their own perspective of this huge county. i'm glad this exists. thanks !

His first comment when he says you're in a box. That's your choice. You can choose to live in an area where everything is located close to you or live somewhere where u have to drive to go where you want. It's a big city but you don't have to go three cities over to get a cheeseburger when theirs a burger place two blocks away. If you live in downtown u can easily go to Santa Monica. North. East. South all the way to Long Beach. Of course if u live in the hills u can afford to have a car. And about the "fake people" the funny thing is all those people are east coast transplants. The real people live in the south east and north LA who been residents for decades. Jut speaking the truth from someone who has generations of families living in LA and was raised in South Central LA.

There were parties all the time in the late 90's - early 00's. Downtown LA had Orion's and there were crazy desert and LA Forest parties happening frequently. Once the Rave act was enacted as Law in 03, a lot of it died down or went commercial.

Hello there. Stumbled upon this vid as part of my research. I’m from Tel Aviv, relocating to LA next week. Although Covid has other plans for ravers, I still wonder, as a person coming from the European nightlife-rave culture, where in LA can I find clubs/productions that throw genuine underground electronic music events?? Need me some electronic goodies, electro, techno, acid, none of that comercial tech house BS!!

I am from Johannesburg South Africa and I have always wanted to have a reason to visit Los Angeles and I got excited when I saw this post. I am still not convinced about getting on a 25 hours flight to see the city of fame. I feel like its already done on tv and there's not much of a reason for me to go visit. this docu was open ended for me, I thought they would explore layers we dont know about this city but they only highlighted one. I guess L.A doesn't have depth and every layer is just as conceited as the next and they all kind of dont mix. Here in Johannesburg everyone is in everyone faces, House music scene here is massive and everyone parties with everyone.

Andrew Hogge has no clue what he's talking about ; the acid house and RAVE movements were the dominant scenes in the 90s which includes early techno like Altern 8, Human Resource and Quadrophonia - taking place primarily in large warehouses (downtown) throughout Los Angeles including Compton and Long Beach. The contemporary techno scene began to flourish in 1998 ; punk died in 84' and is now regrouping in it's original home of East Los Angeles!

Once again, a good piece of work from RA. Still, even though the whole 'scission' thing between the celebrity and superficial image this city suffers from and the growing underground scene is very well outlined, my main feeling was that RA did not much try to get out of their comfort zone. A bit of local underground artists, a few beautiful images of hidden parties taking place in unexpected spots, a little touch of spirituality and we are good to go. My thought is they could have gone a little bit deeper, I don't feel like knowing much more of the origins of this scene, and directions it is taking. Oh, and yeah, hipsters everywhere.

Don't get me wrong, LA is special to me in its role as a big part of my early 20's. However, most of the people in this video embody what I don't like about the city. So pretentious, so cliche, so lacking in substance and guts. I mean, if everyone stands for their own, unique thing, does anyone stand for anything?
