Finding out as a kid that most nutcrackers aren't functional was more devastating than learning Santa Claus isn't real.

These days they aren’t made to crack nuts but more for decoration. I have quite a few nutcrackers in my collection and would never risk cracking nuts with them. But it would be cool to own one sturdy enough to crack nuts

So funny! I was just wondering the other day if my decorative Nutcrackers would actually do the job of cracking nuts and I mildly contemplated trying it, but I somehow knew that was a disaster waiting to happen. Well, you answered my question AND I got to keep my Nutcrackers in tact! Thank you!

I would think the ability to actually crack the nuts would depend on the type of wood used and the angle of the jaw. Am I accurate in my assumption? Is there more to it than just that?

I collect nutcrackers and have been for a good while.I do not use them to crack nuts but even visually i can tell the difference between mass produced ones vs German made or even made in the USA.

I got one of these for my son based on these videos. And after the second or third nut, Santa's wooden moustache broke off, both sides (much like you see starting at 1:04). And the paint started chipping off teeth after about 10 or 15 nuts. So, yeah. They crack nuts . . . but for $130, I expected higher quality and not have to repair this myself. Update . . . The legs came off the body and the holes drilled for the pegs on the leg assembly were waaay too big. So, we just glued them again.

Mainly for decorations these days and not cracking nuts.

Its called "wear and tear". With these Nutcrackers, you are using an actual "tool" to do a job. Not wanting your tool to get dinged, chipped, or broken when used is like asking your hammer to not get scratched while hitting a nail. Wood is not indestructible, and small decorative pieces of wood that serve no purpose around the "work area" are bound to break. Would be best to get a nutcracker with as few decorative parts if you actually plan to use them to crack nuts, and expect it to take damage while doing it. Cracking a nut with one of these is equivalent to smashing a rock with the hood of your car. If you want it to remain fully in tact, then put it on a shelf to look pretty, and don't ever use it.

@@jenn5940 uhhh . . . I know the difference between "wear and tear" and shotty Craftsmanship. Tell me, is it "wear and tear" if the legs come unglued from the body because the holes are too big for the pegs and the glue used is shit? Furthermore, as someone who paints minis and whatnot, I know that applying a few layers of clearcoats after a thing has been painted will keep the paint from chipping easily. This doesn't have that. I'm curious . . . Do you actually have one of these or are you being snarky because you didn't get a hug today?
@cephalopoid2 жыл бұрын
@@LiveLaughLovecraft Sure . . . Except this video exists and it is marketed as a nutcracker that actually cracks nuts. I just thought for $130+, it would be better made.

I guess if the lever and the horizontal axle are strong enough, there's nothing to go wrong. Also use wood glue between head/torso (not only nails, like the one failing in the beginning). It's dumb to do all this work and for a few mm's thickness less, they make it not work. I really think they do it on purpose, so that people break them and buy more. Otherwise I can't explain it.
