Real Wood? (Harbor Freight Yukon? Huskey? Any of them?) Response to Wrench Every Day's Video
Today we answer the age-old question of... Are the tops of these tool cabinets real wood or some sort of zombie manufactured and laminated material?

Great detective work, hayyoo! Rubber trees only produce 60-80 yrs. All the trees planted in what used to be FrenchIndochina have reached their span of usefulness, and are being converted into lumber. Most of the tables imported from that area...purportedly 'oak'...are in fact rubber wood. That the smaller pieces can be fingerjointed and made into toolbox tops clearly defines the difference between the cost of labor here and there.

Agreed it's Rubberwood. My wife used to work for a small furniture store in the 90s. They started stocking dining sets made of the same thing as an inexpensive solid wood alternative to laminates. It's quite durable we had one of them when the kids were young, nearly indestructible. Held up for 15 years before we sold it. Still out there somewhere I'm sure.

I purchased a height-adjustable workbench from Sam's club to turn into a router table. It had a thick top that had that same look. I routed out the space for the router lift to go and it was some kind of wood. It was definitely not MDF which was why I used a workbench instead of buying a router table. Most have MDF work surfaces and I wanted something else that was a bit more weather resistant.

I got a husky "workbench" recently to use as a 3d printer stand to consolidate the print farm. the top is the same type, 72 inches long and it is real wood too. I was curious and did not care as it is getting a silicone mat over most of it but was nice to see definite wood grain, played a little on the back side with sanding and gouging it, sure enough some relatively soft but solid wood

Kind of reminds me of the first kitchen table I bought as a newlywed, except the table was a bit thicker and nicer beech wood, rather than rubber tree wood. If I'd kept it to make barrels with, I could make my own "beech wood aged" Budweiser. Mostly I prefer oak, ash, maple, and rosewood now. There are some half-decent and reasonably priced "maple butcher block counter top" slabs available at HD or Lowes now, suitable for all sorts of toolbox, workbench, and odd-door-size applications. Plus a wider variety available online.

It's rubberwood. They make cheap furniture out of rubber trees after they stop producing latex. They sell the furniture at places like amazon and world market. Then they take the off-cuts and finger joint them together. So it's the bottom of the barrel, but it works fine.

I built a potable work bebch top with a double layer of 3/4 mdf then covered it with several coats of Johnsons Paste wax. It Is holding up very veil. If I mess it up all I have to do is flip it over and I have a new top, working very well for my use! I did not use any glue between the layers, just screwed it together with 1 1/4 decking screws. I did run an edge band made from 1x2 just for looks.

MDF and HDF make amazing workbench tops. My main bench is three pieces of 3/4 with crossmembers supporting front-to-back. The total weight with the 2x6 edge boards, and thick legs make it heavy enough for my big vise immovable. Danish oil soaked in to seal and keep oils out.

Even my cheapy kitchen island has the same exact style wood top, made up of a bunch of short pieces of wood. I think your guess about it being a way to use up left-over ends of boards that were used for other things is correct. Probably these are the left-overs that would have been thrown away but they glue them together to make these cheap wood tops.

Rubber wood sounds like a good guess. It could also be soft maple, which was my first guess looking at mine. You probably are right though now that I think about it. I was a 38 year cabinet maker. Soft maple and rubber wood look similar but rubber wood is considerably cheaper. Good call.

They have machines that make those finger joints and they can then use scraps and pieces and make real wood out of basically scrap. Personally, I think that is a LOT better MDF - and they're not susceptible to water damage. It's a wonderful way to get more material out of basically junk pieces of wood.

The flip side of the question would be...Why would anyone use a finger-joint for a laminate print? To me, it's not a very pretty joint. Please share if you disagree. But, the finger-joint should be a very strong joint because it increases the contact area of the glue surface. Most of your cheap, long and heavy butcher tabletops, that I have seen, use this joint. I presume because it needs to be strong, especially if they're using a cheaper wood that may bow easily.

It's the same wood that is used on the HF woodworking bench. I've seen it used as pallet wood. It's a fairly durable wood. It has the appearance of a white oak but with a tighter grain. It machines well, is not too bad to hand tool work. Obviously a very plentiful wood in China. Eastern USA uses white oak for pallets, out here in the West it's a mix of spruce, pine or fir. I'll take the Chinese wood over any softwood, (fir, larch) for making small projects, pine being the exception. Say what you will, it isn't a bad wood. There is a reason it's glued up in shorter lengths, stability.

I bought some of this kind of wood for a project recently as it was the cheapest stuff available at Lowes. It's really not great quality. I had to take one back as it was split along one of the seams and I left one of the offcuts outside in the rain and it fell apart. So definitely not good quality. Probably OK for this kind of thing but If you're going to use it somewhere where it could get wet, it might be worth another varnish or just be prepared to replace it.

It must be pretty thin, or maybe rubberwood is just poor quality if they have to finger join the pieces. I made a couple of maple workbenches that were about 50% blended, butt joined, and never had any trouble with them lacking strength or dipping in the middle over time.

Finger jointing all done by machine as part of the manufacturing process. Finger join lots of boards, edge glue them together, cut to size and finish sand. If doing butt joints was quicker and more cost effective you can bet they would be doing that instead.

OHHH BEAR! I Thought you were a real wood worker?!? I can't believe you didn't recognize these Finger Jointed wood planks. The machines that do this are giants, and were first shown over 10 years ago at the Wood Workers Conference and Expo in Atlanta, Ga. They are amazing. Yes, it's real wood, some high quality, Oak, and other types. You put random off cuts into one end of the machine and it planes, cuts and finger joints them into boards, planks or what ever you need. They even make industrial load bearing beams out of this stuff. It's a great way to eliminate waste, and produce good wood products cost effectively. Go down to Lowes or HD and you will see them all over the wood areas for sale.

Bill these machines have been in use for at least 50 years...how do I know this? I worked at a sawmill in Northern Ca. in 1969 on a finger joint machine. Very effective way to utilize short cut offs. What an awful job that was! I was down at the end where the finish product was cut (by a circular saw blade about 3' in diameter) and pushed off the machine so I could load it on pallets, with stickers between each layer. That giant blade flung still wet glue out in a never ending stream that coated my work clothes with a stiff coating (when it dried) that was not removable. I lasted 6 months...work was hard to find at that time.

My guess is bamboo, seems like I've seen bamboo floring with those finger joints. if the glue was just regular wood glue it is not impervious to moisture (Outdoor Box). That's why Titebond makes Titebond III for outdoor use. plkracer...Well...Bamboo actually belongs to the grass family and is not what we call wood even though it resembles wood. I really like Bamboo. I have a bedroom floor made from Bamboo instead of the other types of floor products and I love it; it is very hard and wear resistant. I had remodeled two other rooms first and used the other kinds of laminate flooring that are rather flimsy and either tongue & groove or the peel & stick kind. Oh, they look good enough...not real hardwood of course, but real hardwood flooring is very expensive ( at least to me ), but after using Bamboo for the last room, I sure wish I had chosen Bamboo for all of the rooms. It wasn't that much more to buy than the laminates I used but I was just trying to make the budget go as far as possible. I also used the 5/8" Bamboo and it is real solid.
