The 16" Macbook Pro M2 Max compared to an Intel i9. How can it be so much faster?! No benchmarks, just real world tests using the software and projects I actually use.
Tests include:
External display and clamshell mode
Xcode compilation and simulator speed
Wake from sleep, startup and shutdown
Opening adobe photoshop and illustrator

Absolutely brilliant video. As a developer, I thought that the i9 could last me for 5-10 years, but I immediately noticed that it wasn't very snappy compared to a moderate PC laptop running Windows/Linux. It overheats and slows down if I don't turn on the AC. I connect two 4K monitors every day, so I appreciate that you compared the monitor setup speed. I also love how you showed Windows emulation performance and Xcode/JS compile times. I'm curious about Docker performance, but I assume it's probably improved with the M2 as well. Brilliant. I hope your channel grows in views/subs. There aren't many developer-centric videos for bleeding-edge MacBooks.

I've got a similar setup as you. I've got dual 27" 4k monitors (the Dell UlstraSharp ones) I plug the same laptop (i9 16" 2019 MBP) into every day, at the office. I also have the same setup at home. Connecting the laptop to the monitors and having the laptop wake up the monitors, switch them and reorganize everything is quite a ceremonious thing involving several screen flickers as seen in the video. Same drama if I switch to / from clamshell mode. Sometimes I'll get a Kernel panic and the whole system freezes and I'm forced to reboot. Seeing the M2 switch instantly blows my mind. I was also thinking I'd have this laptop for a good 8 years but I'm starting to hesitate.

Don’t tell me the facts that I already know😭I really wish I didn’t get the Jet engine version MaxBook Pro…Is your M1 Max 16 inch or 14 inch? Does the fan spin?
@marcusoutdoors4999
@marcusoutdoors4999 11 ай бұрын
I have the 16inch Max with 24 core 32gb RAM 2TB SSD. Extremely fast and silent. Fan never spins or if it does I can’t hear it. That’s when running main screen + external 34 monitor, say 100 tabs on Safari and photoshop processing 60mp photos and Microsoft office running. Trust me the Max chips are a different world… oh and it never gets hot. That said, I am so impressed with the performance I do wonder if the new M2 15 inch MacBook Air coming out very soon would do the job. Anyway you can buy safe in the knowledge that an M1 is all you need and in some configs is better than the M2 which is also fabulous. Basically all very very good.

Dude the battery on your i9 macbook is 4 yeas old! 😂 The "isheep" mentality... I have the same macbook 16" i9, 32gb ram, 2tb ssd, 8gb vram and still have 6 hours of use. I will see us on 2030 comparing the i9 9th gen fom that macbook with the latest M15 Max...
@marcusoutdoors4999
@marcusoutdoors4999 11 ай бұрын
Don’t believe you, unless you’re just doing non taxing tasks like coding. From new the minute the graphics card engaged, the fan was on the thing got hot and ate its battery. So completely unsuitable for CAD, photo/video editing etc where intensive work would kill the battery from new on 150 mins. Doing the same work a MAX chip will get 7-8 hrs out of the same 100 W/hr battery. As a business we never had any similar problems with any of our other MacBook Pros with our 2010 model i5 15.4 inch still running fine for light duties though the battery only lasts about 5 hrs. The i9 was a massive fail as was the power hungry graphics card, both the end of the line for a very old technology pathway. Hopefully Intel will catch up.

I bought my M2 Max and have had it about 6 weeks now. My jaw is still on the floor… no BS… it is ridiculous. I compiled some code and literally thought the machine malfunctioned or the compiler broke due to bad code. I am not kidding. And forget about video renders… I don’t even think twice about it. In the past I had to schedule renders based around 1. Power availability, 2. Other tasks on the computer that I needed to work on, 3. Fan noise (depending on where I was), and 4. Do I have the time to wait for it to finish. This machine is life changing for those that push our systems. And this is coming from a fully max’d out i9. Wow! I’m so glad that I didn’t wait for the (once again delayed) M3. By the way, the battery life and screen are ALSO incredible. Zero compromises and all upside.

For the laptop getting warm in the bag: Apparently when it goes into standby while it's still powered, it thinks it can do stuff like updates after falling asleep - because the "am I plugged in" circuit doesn't update with the lid closed. So unplug first, sleep second - that should help to avoid that effect. Windows laptops have a similar issue. I have the same two laptops and my experience is almost identical. The M2 is a beast! I still use the i9 for stuff like YT watching or web browsing. For anything that needs real power, I'm so happy with the M2 that doesn't even turn on the fans a lot of the time, when the i9 would already be afraid overheating and start throttling the CPU.

It does not disappoint. After a few weeks of typical office work, including Zoom meetings, Windows 11 on Parallels, etc, driving two external monitors (5K and 2K) on top of its own screen, I think the fans have come on maybe twice, and even then at the lowest speed (mostly inaudible) and only for a short time. It's always cool to the touch, and needless to say, runs laps around the i9 in terms of speed. With 64GB and the Max chip, this was not cheap, but I feel like I got a LOT more per dollar/pound this time than with the i9. I think even the keyboard is improved, WiFi is dropping way less if at all, no more lag when connecting/disconnecting monitors, and I don't miss the touch bar one bit. Extremely happy.

@@squircle-design Thanks. I'm not sure how they populate the boards for the various configurations (do you know?), but I did see that the specs double the ssd bandwidth when all spots are populated, I assume because of the wiring of PCI lanes. I guess the ram chips are about the same with memory channels. I'm really loving the 14" for maintaining a modicum of portability while still being able to leave the power adapter at home. Hey, I´m in the market for a Macbook and in my budget i could either go full out on the M2 Air or the MBP you tested. The air would be the base 13" (which is a bit small) and its bottlenecked by the 8gb ram and im not sure for which one to go, as the i9 seems like a more "pro" and quirky laptop (touchbar aso). What would you recommend?

ok, something is definitely wrong here. I have the i9 Macbook Pro 2019 (32GB/2TB) and I've tested it just with this video (pressing the buttons simultaneously). I have many apps on my machine, so it may affect the result, and it's still on Catalina. Nonetheless, here are my observations: shutdown is like 2-3 seconds faster than on your i9. Startup until the login screen is significantly faster (even faster than on M2!), but after entering passcode it really slows down, so in summary my i9 boots not much sooner than yours. Photoshop and Illustrator loading is almost the same, maybe a little bit faster than your i9 (after first launch/closing they begin to load noticeably faster). Connecting to external 4k display and 'clamp shell mode' is much faster, without any strange flickering (almost just like on m2). And wake from sleep is instant! (checked it many times) I'm not sure why your i9 is different, probably because of newer versions of MacOS - I suppose Apple did nothing to optimise them for Intel. If so, that's sad, because Adobe already forces Catalina users to update the OS :(
@squircle-design
@squircle-design 10 ай бұрын
interesting thanks for testing! The difference might be the 5k display, instead of a 4k display for the sleep stuff. Also I did have a lot of background apps installed which would have slowed startup a bit. Also there was definitely something wrong with the disk, as each boot it was doing a disk check which I think was making it very slow to boot to mac os. After a format and fresh install it was fine again for booting. So yeah not a great test really, no doubt others aren't so problematic...

I can’t be sure if the 2019 model is slow, because intel or macOS version. I mean, the newer macOS versions have introduced new things that make a little bit slow than previous versions. In other hand, I had intel MacBooks it was very often to heard the fans on high rpm. Always warm or even I remember when I had to restart to workaround with some background apps that uses high percentages of processor. All of theses issues happened me on MacBook Air 2015, MacBook Pro 13 2015 and especially on MacBook Pro 13 2020. Now, I have a MacBook 14 m1 pro and I’m still facing temperatures issues, sometimes, it gets warm and for some reason the fans keeps 2000 rpm. It is quiet but why doesn’t try to cool more often.

I absolutely should not have watched this. I’m running pretty close to the same Intel MacBook (i9 with 32GB mem and 2TB SSD). I guess I knew it was increasingly slow and clunky (partly reflecting increased resource demands from apps and OS). But, you nailed it. The differences are far more dramatic than you we’ve come to expect based on 3 years and a couple of generations. It’s still challenge to consider the costs involved and I suspect the re-sell on my 2019 will also be impacted the improvements in the M1 and M2 machines. Since transitioning from Windows to MacOS a little over ten years ago, I’ve generally waited 4 years or more to upgrade but the performance differences were never this dramatic.

@@MrSamPhoenix One thing in Apple's favor is limited designs to worry about. Mac mini, Mac studio, Macbook Air, Mackbook Pro, and Imacs. 5 Total. Easier to optimize battery life and performance with less manufacturing product designs to build CPUs around. Intel or AMD are trying to cater to far too many designs, so it leads to less optimization. Something gets sacrificed in the process. In most cases, it is either heat management or battery Iife.
@MrSamPhoenix
@MrSamPhoenix 10 ай бұрын
@@akin242002 that’s true to a certain extent. ARM is just more efficient by the nature of it’s design. It’s why we use it for smartphones and such. And keep in mind that manufacturers of windows laptops have access to Intel and AMD to better optimize for things like battery life. Plus, look at this video as it’s the very best example of how Intel’s design fall behind Apple’s. At the beginning of all this Apple wanted Intel to design something that could be used in an iPhone, Intel said “no” and the rest is history.

That issue with the Intel MacBook getting hot and draining the battery while it's supposed to be in sleep mode is evidently a problem that plagues most modern laptops. There's some context to be added to the shutdown/startup time. The M1/2/3 chips are "cheating" by not actually turning off, but rather entering a deep hibernation. The intel Macs suspends the tasks to the SSD while the M1/2/3 chips suspend to memory, the reaosn they can do this and the intel can't is because of increased energy efficiency, so it is still the advantage of the M1/2/3 macs. If you want to truly turn off the M-series macs you'll need to either hold the power button in, or drain the battery completely.

While its fair to say that the M2 2023 MBP should perform noticably faster in all tests than an otherwise 4+ year older MBP with similar specs but intel. The thing to keep in mind which he did quickly say in the Windows app opening that the 2019 machine has more apps loaded on it and of course it would. It’s a 4+ year old machine. Would this affect start up and shut down of the machine and its apps? Of course it would. Apps that start and shut down in the background affect the overall performance simple fact. I have the 2019 MBP, and I bet if he’d restored to factory spec with same apps loaded as the M2 the time differences would be a fair site closer than in these tests. Not a fair comparison in my opinion, and I love the new M2 macbooks. But I have the 2019 and its still rolling much better than his “tests" showed.
