My family, grandparents, owned some land abutting Christ's Convent in Tomar, Portugal. As a young boy, I would walk through the pines to the castle walls and imagine ages gone by. Around the mid 1950's the convent (castle) was used as a military base. An uncle of mine was stationed there.. I got to know his fellow soldiers and, they would let me into the castle. Many, many hours were spent roaming those walls. I even met a ghost or two (lol). Thank you for the magnificent trip back in time.

Portugal one of the most exciting places for the Templars. What they found in the old Phoenician areas helped them rediscover the Americas. Read about the Greek description of Phoenician holdings beyond the Pillars of Heracles. Then the Templars gain control of the coasts of former Phoenician territories with all their tunneling and excavating I believe they found navigational tools. After papal the order that dissolved them the Military Order of Christ was reformed like 7 years later and they got most of the old Templar holdings. They complete the Reconquista and then cross the ocean. Henry the Navigator and his students changed the world.

@Matthew Familia "In my opinion people should be left to do whatever they want" That's just not how the world works in the Middle Ages, raids and counter raids were so frequent that people saw it as an inevitable part of life. The Europeans had suffered Muslim raids for hundreds of years, which only stopped after the Europeans destroyed the last Muslim pirate base in Tunisia in 1087, a mere 8 years before the Crusades. If it weren't for the Crusades, the Europeans may have been raided again during the Crusade years.

I was surprised that you mentioned nothing of the Templars unique banking ability that also gave them power and influence. In fact, I would argue that this financial influence is what ultimately brought them into conflict with France's Phillip and the Pope at their quasi-end.

They did give Phillip time and extensions on his loans in an attempt to get the money from him. However it was because they insisted on him paying back what they owed and the threat of being excommunicated by pope Boniface 4th( I think that was his name) that laid the foundation for the destruction of the knights templar. He also waited until a French Pope was in power before taking action against the order.

Montréal is a Crusader castle on the eastern side of the Arabah. The castle was built in 1115 by Baldwin I of Jerusalem during his expedition to the area where he captured Aqaba on the Red Sea in 1116. Originally called 'Krak de Montreal' or 'Mons Regalis', it was named in honor of the king's own contribution to its construction (Mont Royal). Little remains of the original Crusader fortifications. Although it has never been fully excavated, it is known that there was a set of three walls, which partially remain.

I dont know why but this video’s awesomeness makes me laugh at the absurdity of the portrayal of Templars in some TV series and movies. The latest calamity being the Turkish show Ertugrul, the way the templars are portrayed in that show reaches an astonishing level of nonsense
@Seajay-ey3uh
@Seajay-ey3uh 2 жыл бұрын
I’m watching Ertugrul now. I was really upset at first with the portrayal of the Knights Templar until I realize that it would be the Turkish take on it, since it was a Turkish series, that they were the protagonist and the Knights Templar the antagonists. They had to be the heroes and the Knights Templar they evil archenemy. It doesn’t change my beliefs about the Knights Templar, which I was always fascinated about, hence, why I am here watching documentaries on the Knights Templar..
