This has to be the absolute best demonstration I've ever seen to solve an active short. Aka grounded power or vise versa on any circuit. You should be given the medal of honor alongside a title of greatest teacher of the year award. I'm 43 and have had this one problem blocking my mechanic skills keeping me held on a level of frustration that's caused several vehicles to receive body damage from my impatience. You sir have my allegence and upmost respect. I'm forever indebted to your knowledge and will seek more of your intellectually advanced demonstrations of superior mechanical abilities from this day forward with a guaranteed solution and satisfaction I've never had before. Very good video. I used one of these short circuit testers 20 years ago so after seeing your videos using a scope it is good to see the old tools still have their place in the shop. As always well presented easy to follow advice.

What a raw display of power! This is very similar to my college days. I had instructors that were ex military. I learned so much from those guys. You have been an instructor before or should consider becoming one now. I'm 74. My instructors helped developed the redstone rocket. I had the ability to be good but they, by being teachers of a very high level opened doors for me that I had only been able to dream about.

Best tester ever just wish I found this video first. Once I connected your tested found the short IMMEDIATELY. I purchased a tone testers which failed to find the short. Thanks again for helping me get the car started. The dealer couldn't figure it out and charged me an hourly fee.....Glad I was determined to find something to give me the clue. Your tester surely did that....I can't say enough about this but it works darn GREAT

That was one of the best videos I've seen! You covered every step tracing that short in detail the way it should be explained. The little amp meter really did it's job. Emphasizing at very start that; in this case, we were working with amps and not volts got us viewers oriented. Some of us may have jumped right away into using a volt meter and we would have been lost from step one. Thank You.

You are an excellent teacher Wayne. Most of the time when guys say they can fix something, they usually can't, and usually end up creating more problems.

Great illustrations you got there,quite informative ....reminds me when i too had an active short for sometime back, then luckily as i was working on the sump guard saw a spark from the positive cable running directly from the battery touching the exhaust manifold. Saved me a trip to the mechanic. Loose cables and the exhaust manifolds are never great friends.

I bought this from a guy and he said he replaced the dash, and there Is something rattling like crazy when I hit certain bumps.maybe he changed the heater core and didn't bolt everything back up. Sometimes a good deal Isn't worth the trouble. Love your videos. They really help us poor folk.

Thanks for presenting this excellent video on what can be a very frustrating exercise in troubleshooting. You've shown how to do it in a logical fashion!

good to see a systematic approach. Some thing I have always done is not to use a fuse in the circuit at all. I use a headlamp bulb 55 watt or greater in place of the fuse. The bulb glows bright when high current is flowing in the circuit and dimly when low current is flowing. The load of the bulb protects the circuit. I wiggle all the wiring in the circuit first and more often than not the bulb changes how bright it is glowing when wires are wiggled near the cause of the short..

In 1972 I had a 65 Mustang that would have a dead battery every three days. The charging circuit worked fine so I thought that may be the battery was just old and needed a new one, I bought a new one. But three days later, a dead battery again. Then one night I notticed if I got up close to the tail light it was very dimly lit with everything off. I found that the brake pressure switch was hot and shorting out internally but not blowing the fuse. A new brake light switch and no more problem.

This is the first time i saw fi ding a short with simple tool, and most important word is knowledge is the expensive tool, we can't have until learn and keep on learning. Thank you

Very good lesson, thank you. One note about the use of the word “short”. In trade school 60 years ago they explained that there are three terms for electrical problems. Short, open and ground. Short- is copper to copper. Open- is copper to nothing. Ground - is copper to steel. With your situation you did not know if you had a short or grounded circuit, until you found the problem.

I worked for over 4 decades on passenger elevators and I often ran into shorts to ground. Elevator fuses are also expensive. So I use to strip the insulation off the #18 wire and use one strand as a temporary fuse. The #18 wire strand would not blow if the ground was cleared. However, it would pop if the ground was still there. Most elevators use # 18 multi conductor cables to wire most of the elevator. I enjoyed your process. It kinda brought back old memories.

If only I had seen this video the day it was posted. I've got a '94 Grand Cherokee, that had a dead short which started acting out on the 17th. Kept blowing the 40A ignition switch fuse. Finally tracked it down, but without the diagram or the knowledge of how to read one, finding the short was difficult. Finally did find it though. Thanks for the great vids. Wish every mechanic had as much common sense/knowledge as you do!

Awesome video. I haven't seen one of those short finders in years. I can remember using a heavy duty turn signal and a test light . Blast from the past. Some logical thinking.

Got one of these out of a J.C. Whitney catalog about 45 years ago for a couple of bucks and it has saved my ass more than once. It has out performed the new fangled tracers and signal injectors they use now days.

DUDE!!! I've dealt with electrical for over thirty years now. I'm a marine technician. I must admit that some parts of electrical stuff is a mystery to me. I have a '99 Jeep with electrical issues. I have tried repeatedly with no luck. This video gives me hope. Your explanations are clear, concise easy to understand. I learned more from this video than anyone else, I think. Thank you for this video it was a huge help and a reminder to look at relays associated with mini fuses. Had the exact same problem. PCM B blown mini fuse. Fuse is associated with PCM and fuel pump relay. Removed F/Pump relay, fuse stopped blowing. Used the A/C relay for testing and C5 vette fired right up! Thank you.

40 year automotive tech here. I use an old style sealed beam headlight to test a shorted circuit. I have fuse adapters that plug into the fuse socket so the headlight bridges the fuse socket. A short will light the headlight to full brightness. I use a clamp on DC ammeter to follow the circuit to the short. Or watch the headlight while carefully moving the harness.

In addition, he taught me to read electrical diagrams. They make more sense than ever now. I'm surprised the diagrams show what color wires you need to check and where they are routed. I hope I can use this info in the real world - under the hood!
