There was a screenshot going around where a guy said he read about 10 Warhammer books and decided he knows enough to participate in fan discussions, and tried to chat on a 40K fan forum. "I was promptly told that I don't know shit and that I should shut my heretical piehole"

For me it was: "Huh these Necron guys look cool, I wonder what their deal is?" *One hour of lore later* "...So you're telling me that everything is happening in this setting all because the giant space toads didn't want to invent sunscreen?"

for me it all started when I watched that god damn Astartes short movie. it infected me afterwards

That moment you get into Warhammer 40k, take years to build and paint a full army, only to realise that there's actually a game to play those miniatures

that's such a great point about the world being so big you get to pick and choose what to interact with. I've never really cared for Space Marines and spent most of my time with Warhammer reading up on Necromunda and playing it and actively ignoring all the large armored, tower-sized tanks and other shenanigans.

I went from "yeah dawn of war is cool, so is the lore" 4 years ago to "this is my custom sisters of battle order, their living saint is resurrected jean d'arc"

First time I laid eyes on a space marine It was love at first sight, of course I was like 15 and didn't realize there was more to W40K than just Dawn of War, so imagine my enthusiasm when I realized there was a whole world of little plastic men waiting to be painted -I've always wondered just how much heavy lifting W40K video games did for the franchise.

Me thinking at first glance that Warhammer lore is too nerdy even for me. Then that first bite of a Warhammer game or seeing the Adric in your feed and thinking "Why not" or seeing a Warhammer audiobook and the cover and synopsis looks kind of cool. Then you're unironically reading the wiki and getting *another* book because you got the first book in a series so want to continue it. By then realizing its too late and It's got you hooked..

my first taste of 40k was at comic-con when DOW came out back in 04. i didn't much care about the video games or table top but i got hooked on the books.

The mechanicus game is what popped my cherry. The silliness is what finally got me to break out my wallet for the minis.

Funnily enough, I escaped the "buying models" bit, as between the lore (back when GW still gave a damn) and the video games, I find myself rather content.

Literally watching this after painting my first box of plastic crack. Rogue Trader made me adore the setting and after actually watching a few tutorials and having some super helpful conversations with the dude at my local gamestore I ended up having an awesome first paint experience --- my Raven Guard are looking fresh. Awesome hobby to pick up; especially as someone who came from D&D I have lots of models to paint and practice on as well!! Stoked to be getting into the hobby 🖤

My dad has had the hobby since the 80’s, (painting minis and reading the books for both 40k and fantasy) so my fate was sealed the moment i was born. Nowadays most of what i read is his book collection, i paint minis myself and i can now also show him stuff like trailers and gameplay from darktide and total war warhammer 3

These things are just like giant puss puppies that want to "play", but "playing" kills people... but they are so happy they don't know that, and they don't know why no one wants to play with them... so they go away depressed and pupate into these killer mosquito things. So.... you're doing it right. ROFL.

It really sneaks up on you. One day you are playing a videogame because it's good (DOW in my case) and a few years later the big lore channels on youtube rarely tell you something you didn't already (at least peripherally) knew.

A piece of fan art is what got me interested, and I am glad you learned very early that 40k is really really dumb but thats why its good! it is truly a circus as you put it. I still recall first hearing about warhammer years ago due to Arch Warhammer, got confused wondering how things fit together due to not understanding there were multiple universes at first (Took a few lore videos). For anyone interested in the craziness of 40k, I recommend Arch's War for Badab series

Try looking at a map of the warhammer universe then wonder what the hell am I doing this for? The implication is that I have neither a sense of direction nor full grasp of how bloody insane the High lords are to think they are capable of controlling this Imperium. The scope of it is enough to justify why they act like toddlers when someone is doing a better job than them. Good luck you are going to need it.

I got hooked on 40k back in '14 or '15. Left back in '21 because of how GW treated the creator of the Astartes series as well as other minor reasons. The lore is what kept me there for so long, and they are rapidly retconning the best, most grimdark parts of it out to try and appeal to the mythical "wider audience." You will either leave disgusted, or live long enough to see yourself become a GW shill.

For me, I got into 40K through Darktide as well, way back in the beta. From there I listened to a few audio books from the first few Horus Heresy novels, then some Guard books. I went to my nearest Games Workshop and picked up the Cadia Stands Astra Militarum army box. $4,000 and a year and a half later, "even in debt, I still serve."

Darktide got me to read Eisenhorn, and Eisenhorn made me a fan. My impression of the franchise had been that it was so grimdark and absurd as to be ridiculous. Seeing the more grounded, everyday side of the universe really let me wrap my head around it as a setting I could be invested in.

I wanted to play the tabletop game but didn't have money so I got into the 3D printer scene, then I didn't have a space for the 3D printer so I got into the video games, and then from the video games I ended up on Tabletop Simulator playing the tabletop game, and now I'm looking at a handful of infantrymen and a tank knowing full-well that even if I wanted to get more and be able to play, it would cost more than I could afford. Across 4 years, they've gotten 3 coats of paint and will never be completed xD

The game that finally got me going into lore was Dawn of War 2, and the start of that lore dive was Eisenhorn by Dan Abnett

My only advice is don't get bogged down into the whole weird thing about reading every book to learn "the lore". "The lore" is not learning every Horus Heresy character's name and how they die or whatever, I don't know why people care so fucking much about that. Back in the day we read each others' codexes and got the overall vibe and feel of the setting, the general overview. That's good. The setting is about aesthetics, not which fucking Blood Angels captain boarded a Strike Cruiser during the Battle of Bumarse or whatever.

Darktide is the game that got me to pull the trigger on finally buying models. And now it has its own board game coming out. We've come full circle.

I’ve been aware of 40k my whole life. I never got into it because I had no one to play with, and I suck at painting. This year, I decided to get into the lore, and I’m really loving the grim dark universe they’ve created. I don’t see myself buying it or painting any miniatures anytime soon, but I am absolutely fascinated with the characters and lord.

I think the greatest thing about Darktide is that it took some of the most small-time 40k units and made them look and feel awesome and powerful, the guard veteran, sanctioned psyker and priest are low-stat cannon fodder units, and while ogryns have a decent stat line, their models are dated and derpy, and other 40k media always portray them as full potato meat mountains, but the way theyre all represented in Darktide makes them out to be absolute badasses.

6:20 its cool to see I'm not the only one doing this. I grew up wanting to do nothing but pvp, playin unreal tournament, cod and Destiny etc. and all that fun stuff. But i dunno, one day that stuff didn't feel the same way it did and now i want nothing but good stories and characters and challanges like Mass effect, SoulsLikes and niches like KCD. Don't get me wrong tho i still do all that it just isn't my main thing anymore. Love the video!

I honestly found it whent when every teenager posted "dark humor" where there was either sabaton music or warhammer trailers playing in the video, i learn to look past the edgelords and found one of the things i love and hate dearly that is the dawn of war series
