My top tip for kitchen organizing is that the person who does the majority of the cooking is the one who should organize it. The cook’s workflow is what should determine where tools and ingredients go. If there are two cooks in a household then those people should work it out together. I don’t know what that’s like because I’ve always been the cook since I left my parents’ home.

I actually think it’s important to keep stuff like Elliot’s PH kit in the kitchen- in my experience the more I hid stuff away to “be presentable and organized” the more reluctant I was to ever use it- it felt like one more step/mess. I treat my kitchen like my art space, and like to keep as much as possible easily accessible without caring how it looks because then I actually use everything I own and frequently get more creative, rather than just having a minimal and pristine show room. I still don’t have the privilege of owning the space I live in, but it’s helped so much to make my space feel like “mine”. Sometimes we don’t realize how many unnecessary and stifling “rules” we enforce on ourselves, when in reality doing the opposite and giving yourself permission- via having all the things at arms length rather than packed rooms away in storage- is usually the best thing.

My family are all short, not tiny but definitely shorter than average. My parents built our house and when they designed our kitchen they placed the upper cabinets lower on the wall than standard. The microwave is also on the countertop instead of in a high press (the usual in our country unfortunately). My partner is 6"3 and his family are giants, it's all fun and games until I try and get a glass of water in their house 😂 he also pointed out the dust on the top of our bookshelf - my parents told him it's his job to clean that now because he's the only one to see it 😂

Whatever anyone says about buying identical sets of spice or other storage jars, I am tired of seeing them standing in military fashion in EVERY KZfaqr’s kitchen. Your approach was spot on. They are not on display, you can actually identify the product or spice when it’s in a different shaped jar much more easily , and it saves soooo much money! I know you didn’t think things out before starting to organise, but why can’t you be spontaneous and finally settle on what’s suitable after you have used the kitchen ! Loved this video!

IDK, I'm far away from KZfaqr's kitchen :) Not really activity in SoMe in my personal life, but I do have the same identical sets of jars in my kitchen. And doing labeling - I label everything in my household and love it ❤ Also in 20 years of living on my own I didn' break any :) All of them fits perfectly to my kitchen so no, with new spice or ingredience I'd not buying new (it would not fit anyway), just reorganize the current one. Basically, one system doesn't fit all, and it's perfectly OK :)

I have a number of mismatched storage jars, modern and vintage, on my counter. I find when everything matches, it is borderline creepy. I like to see the things I use every day and have easy access to them, so I store them in clear jars that I've thrifted or from food that I used up (i.e. sauce jars). They are designed to be used, not to be decor, which works well for me because I prefer the appearance of perfectly imperfect homes.

The "cinnamon" problem is a deeply philosophical issue. I say don't over think it and move the cinnamon around until it tells you where it wants to be, unless you happen to have enough room where the many categories cinnamon occupies can all be next to each other as in a Venn diagram, with the cinnamon living in the middle, straddling all categories therefore negating the point of dividers.

I laughed so hard when Elliot ran away from the camera. Thanks for sharing your true self! Also, I've found that using a permanent marker on glass can be easily scrubbed off when you're washing the jar. If I decide to use a sticker instead, I use the small, unlabeled ones I bought at an office supply store literally two decades ago for who-knows-what and I just keep them in the kitchen for easily finding them. Also, I always forget this and end up using two stickers instead of one, write on the label before taking it off the backing so it looks like your best handwriting instead of the scribble of "oh goodness jars are hard to write on!"

I love this realistic, affordable and sustainable kitchen organization video! For herbs/spice jars, I've been using post-it notes/sticker methods and love writing puns for our spice labels "Sage Advice", "Ginger Spice aka Geri Halliwell" etc. For the larger sesame seed jar, I drew a little Sesame Street logo (with Seed written where 123 is), to add some fun and joy to the mundane. In a house with many roommates, we have a duplicate spot for our spices high up in an unused cabinet to refill those containers whenever needed.

Why don't you turn your glass cabinet/ appliance garage into a pantry? Chia seeds, oils vinegars should not be that close to heat source - they will go rancid very fast. Your coffee maker would be more useful and safer out on the counter so you don't have steam wrecking the inside of the cupboard! Can you put your microwave somewhere into the island?
@hellojanuaryy
@hellojanuaryy Жыл бұрын
My thought exactly. The steam from coffee machine & microwave can damage the inside of those cabinets. And as a daily coffee machine's user myself, I constantly open the water lid, milk and creamer holder, coffee beans grinder lid, etc - so definitely need an open space for me to use it. It will frustate me in matter od days if I store my coffee machine inside a tight space like that.

Love going through the process with you! And while I love the oil and vinegar cupboard, it seems very practical, heat exposure can make them spoil super quickly, especially that sesame oil since you're probably not going to go through it very quickly ( you should probably keep that one in the fridge actually). I would store them and least in the lowers for easy access or somewhere else entirely. Vitamins also can spoil super quickly from heat and I personally would not have them above and so near the stove. My tip, even if it's not the most practical (although it tends to be fine in a small kitchen like I've always had) is dishes in the uppers near the stove and food storage as far away as possible. I'm also the kind of cook that puts everything out on the counters while I'm using it so this has always worked for me!

It's choice overload - where is the best place to put the plates/glasses, silverware, oils, spices, large pots and pans...the list goes on. :) If you are like me then you need to make a choice and put it SOMEWHERE and then move on. Then take notes over the next weeks and months on what is working and what is not working and adjust. It takes multiple rounds of organizing to get your personal optimized flow going. Also, check the expiration dates on spices and other consumables; the amount of expired spices I threw away was crazy.

Sometimes, duplicate items make sense. We are a work from home household, and we have a little break room space. It has a little coffee area and snacks in jars, that's for not having to go all the way down to the kitchen if being in a spare room allows you to have this still at work mindset. Keeping a spare container of stevia and powder creamer to fake an office, but at home is nothing to worry about. Sad warning The room was supposed to be a nursery, but things didn't work out the way we expected. It's a little difficult not wanting to make it over too much to have to undo it when it is time. It has a daybed for a guest room, but we haven't had guests yet. We got the daybed from IKEA as a placeholder bed, intending it for guests, while we took more time figuring out our bed. It was also the room we were in just before the loss. We figured the day bed might be good when little outgrows a crib or for feeding times.

I so agree with you on not buying a bunch of organizing bins and stuff and rehousing everything, unless like you said its stuff you buy in bulk and use all day everyday for the rest of your life....staples. we drink a lot of tea and have a tea drawer. I just cut the tops off the boxes and have them like that in the drawer. My husband thought it was brilliant

I really love the whole embracing the wonkeyness of your existing food containers and just adding similar pieces as needed. I love to be organized but it can be a trap. Have you ever organized a pantry so well that you didn't want to mess it up and ended up not using is? Or when you can't find something that you know you have because you just organized? I had to get real in my space and sometimes that means a little clutter, however, I usually find things the first try. The main rule is...when putting something away, to think, where would I expect that thing to be? Don't you love when, say at a party or something, you can find everything you need immediately because it is organized organically. It looks really nice, Kelsey, you and Elliot will surely enjoy your beautiful, new, elegant kitchen! Congratulations!

First love your channel. I'd say take a good two weeks or weekends for the initial organization of the kitchen. This way you can take your time in sorting what you want and where it goes. Once you figure out the natural flow of the space, you'll tweak things here and there. But I feel the kitchen is a space that's always being tweaked.

I label my spice jars. But Everything else if I can't tell what it is by looking at it (which you can with most things) I cut off the name of the item from the bag and slide it into the jar. Sometimes I even include the cooking instructions. Saves a lot of time. But if you buy bulk and can't tell what it is by looking I like the grease pencil...good idea so you can reuse the jar for other things without much effort or waste. Very relatable video. I use Mason jars from the thrift store for most of my storage.

I have dedicated myself to eating bread spread of the same brand and buying the same kind of chickpeas. Therefor I collected so many jars of the same kind I now use for spices and larger items. Since they won't just discontinue both items I will never run out of jars :) I live in Germany though and most of the products (at least that I use) come in glass jars anyway.

I live in a small apartment with shelves that are nearly impossible to move. I ended up buying a bunch of new containers when I moved in all from the same set/line because they are designed to fit together and that allowed me to use as much of the space as possible. The ones I brought with me didn't fit together as well and meant there was lost space I just couldn't afford to have. I didn't like spending the money and I have a variety of other containers the very top shelves I have to climb to, but sometimes getting sets is handy.

You got me with your “jarring” comment😂 I would say organise your kitchen based on whoever cooks the most. So everything they need needs to be with easy reach. And the most used items in the same drawers/cupboards- reduces the amount of time you need to open multiple cabinets while unloading the dishwasher or cooking. The non cook also needs their own space for the stuff they do - like breakfast stuff. I use the ikea sticker hooks on the tile to hang a couple of different sized scissors around the kitchen, because I find searching for them in a drawer extremely tedious. So I use and then hang back. I also found using boxes or baskets really convenient to store open packets or snacks in cupboards - that way I can actually keep track of the stuff I don’t use, and if there is spillage that’s OK. And some trays to corral stuff like my dogs treat box & food. I also found folding kitchen towels and then stacking them like you did without rolling saves more space. And I disagree with Elliot.. you need a full drawer for it 😂
@evaburgess3648

A flip side to the jar argument. I bought matching sets of storage jars and am still using them many many years later. Glass ones from ikea approx 15 years ago, more recent ones with clear lids - they are in a draw & I can see what’s in them easily - I have had for at least 6 years. I collected each set a few at a time so it wasn’t one huge spend. But for sure do whatever works for you

I recently reorganised most of my kitchen and although I have a baking cupboard, anything in a small jar / container is considered either a herb or spice and isn't in the baking cupboard, but it depends on how you use these items. I have 2 baskets that pull out from my cupboard, one with herbs and one with spices so I can just pull it out like a drawer and pick the one I am looking for. My categorisation goes by the 2 rules - if it is green it is in the herb basket, if not it is a spice!!

Labelling pro tip: If you want to use stickers but still want to be able to remove them easily without them leaving a sticky residue, use canning labels! They are specifically designed to come off so you can reuse the same jar for a new canning project.
@abbylynn8872
@abbylynn8872 Жыл бұрын
Protip for labeling.... use packing tape and the sharpie paint pen. Much easier to write on than round containers. Plus you can practice to get your best handwriting. I initially just wrote on the containers but changed to the packing tape trick. Rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer will remove the sharpie paint pen from your containers. Also get both white and black pens because depending on the food items you may not be able to see the print on top of the item and where you have the container stored. I love recycle and reuse. I saved up the sizes of glass containers I thought I would need before venturing to swap out containers. I did by stackable Square containers for spices amd seasonings based my current storage situation from Daiso so a much more inexpensive option than the Amazon route. I researched to 6 months. I like to cook so I have lots of seasonings as spices. My sauces in the fridge I reused the squeezable ketchup and smaller mustard containers.

I derive so much pleasure from going through my spice cabinet. I bulk shop spices and decant them into jars for daily use. I have a food saver sealer that seals up the plastic packaging and keep the contents fresh and mainly from spilling. Rubber bands are not forever. I am always reorganizing and moving things in my small kitchen. When space is at a premium, you really use it wisely. Also, Thank you for the brief review of labeling markers.

Wide mouth mason jars are the best. Keeps pests out, dishwasher safe, most use same size lids, you can get plastic cover and they come in different colors. Best of all if you break one a replacement likely will all ways be available. Maybe this should have a happened before you started remodel. You have excellent tastes, however to be functional should be the primary decider good luck Be sure to capture Elliot’s first creations.

I think you should group things based on the location you use them most i.e. pans by the stove, towels by the sink. Once you cook a couple meals in your kitchen you'll realize which items go together i.e. cutting boards and knives. pots/pans/cutting boards/cooking utensils/oven mitt - by the stove spices/oils - by the stove dishes/silverware/cups - by the dishwasher or kitchen table appliances (mixer/coffee maker/toaster/blender) - all together on the bottom shelves of your hutch food/pantry items - all together on the top shelves of your hutch
