Please never feel like you have to validate how you feel, yes there are other things going on in the world but this is a huge struggle for families that you are fully entitled to be upset and worried about. I'm also in the same boat as you although I now have another on the way, to say its going to be tough will be an understatement, but it will be worth it. I just keep reminding myself this is only for a few years, once they go to school things will be alot easier. Good luck xx

I feel you. My little boy started nursery in November, 4 days a week from 8.30-3.30. Which is £36 a day for us and we also get tax free childcare. I’m working 4 days a week too. It’s worrying when everything else is also going up! We keep getting asked when we will have ‘another one’ and I’m thinking.. there’s no way we could possibly afford 2 kids in childcare and there’s no way we can afford for me to not work either. What do they expect us to do, really!? Also, there ARE much worse things in the world, there always will be but this is the life we are living and it’s hard for us regardless. I hate being made to feel guilty for feeling like we’re struggling. There’s different types of struggles in the world and this just happens to be ours! X

It's just horrendous! My salary as a teacher in the UK left me total £3000 a year after paying for childcare, and that is supposed to cover tax, insurance, mortgage/rent, utilities, bills and living?! This is why so many women are forced out of work after children - it just isn't worth it!

I’m about to resign from work BECAUSE of this exact issue!!! It’s ridiculous!! I absolutely love my job but it’s costing me more to put my child in childcare and work than for me to just be a SAHM which I’m dreading! I was really down the 9 months I was on maternity and couldn’t wait to get back to work so I’m fuming that I’m having to choose to quit work simply because there’s no other help!

I know there are places in earth where no one cares or pays that much for your kids childcare all you got to do it from your own earnings. I appreciate UK govt. My girl starts nursery when she’s one which is January next year. I’m from Norway and there nursery full time is capped at £350 by the government as they help fund it 🙈 if you choose to stay home you get money from the government which is about £7-800. Kinda wish we’d moved back there to have kids 😅😅

This sounds amazing. Would be great to give women the choice in UK, especially for couples earning less than 60k a year government could for example fund £500 month to stay at home at least until 3 years of age. Women here either have to work and pay loads for childcare or give up work and get nothing.

I completely understand! I’m considering dropping my days as it just doesn’t seem worth it financially 🤷🏼‍♀️ You do the right thing by working and seem to be penalised for doing so! They don’t make it easy at all. And they seem to assume that if you’re a higher tax payer you don’t struggle and aren’t entitled to any help/benefit 😫

Like you my partner and I are both in well paid jobs and still we need to cut back massively to pay for childcare. I’ve worked hard for my career there is no way I want a break! It’s mad that they don’t cap childcare amounts to encourage parents to continue working, in the long run it must be better for them and us (surely!) xx

Omg this video is so timely, I researched the whole gov 20% stuff last night and what a head blag. Your videos helped me get it. So basically if your bill is more than £833.33 per month then the 20% limit is reached and payments will be more. Its obviously really helpful to have this help but childcare is still sooo expensive. I'm going back full time next month but will need to defo reasses if we have another. 🤯🤯

Thanks so much for sharing! I'm in a similar situation and find it equally frustrating how complicated this system is. From what I understand, you can get max £500 per quarter with tax-free childcare. I reached the £500 threshold in March for Jan-March and was therefore not matched the full 20%. I think the fact that this system is so complicated shows that the people who came up with it probably never had to actually budget for childcare themselves...

The cost of childcare puts a lot of stress and sadness on what should be the most precious times being with a new baby or even deciding to have children in the first place. The 20% top up is spread across a 1/4 so just pay your amount each month (we pay just shy of 1k per month) then they top you up: so there’s always enough in the tax free account whether you pay more that more or more is added from the gov if that makes sense? Last time I looked we had £264 knocking around in it but I know that it’ll bump up for the month when we have less from the gov. Our bill is 12k PA for 4 days, as long as you pay the same each month it works out, hope that makes sense! All your extras sound mad! We pay a flat rate PD drop off/pick up anytime 7.30-6.30pm and inclusive of everything Inc meals and disposables; makes it easier to manage without hidden extras! (Based in Warwickshire for context) x

Thanks for sharing Shan. The system is really infuriating - we decided that I'd go back to work and my husband change work/work weekends because the cost is astronomical. Other Scandinavian countries have a really good subsidised childcare system that enables parents to return to work - I really think the UK needs to learn some lessons! There's lots of work going on to change the landscape of UK childcare (see Pregnant Then Screwed), but I think it's going to take ages and in the meantime we all have to muddle on. I hope you're able to find a balance that works xx

Hi, I completely feel you about the rise in childcare costs. I'm currently on maternity leave with my second and I'm a nursery deputy manger. My oldest still goes to nursery twice a week and even with staff discount it's incredibly expensive. I just wanted to mention incase you weren't sure but the term after George turns 2 you will be entitled to 15 hours 2 year funding. This is a means tested funding offer for most families but also applies to children who's parent or parents are in the military. It's worth applying for. You need to apply for this yourself and they give you a code for your nursery to claim the hours x

I have been a stay at home mum for the whole time as could not justify paying out all or 95% of my wages to go to work and wasn't really that bothered about going back either.. I know your situation is slightly different as you mentioned previously that it's mainly to do with mortgage application and moving.. my sister in law got a job at sainsburys part time so she wasnt counted as a dependent aslong as I believe she earned over £10,000 with theirs. So might be worth a have a look at.. hope it all works out x

My son is 25. People kept asking was I having more...I said NO. I already knew where the world was going economically. They told you everywhere that we were going to be enter communism at some point. I didn't want to deal with the stress of our current and future reality. I didn't want more of my children living in the mess we are headed for. Our children will grow in a world that's toxic, less jobs, unaffordable housing, food shortages and filled with toxins, dosed up with vaccines etc,. I was thinking about my child's experience in the future world and not my desire to gush over a kid. We're forgetting about what they are going to have to suffer through. When you decide to have kids you're required to think about all that comes with it. Kids don't fall out the sky. I thank God I have one adult child. I couldn't afford any small babies and I have a good stable job.

I’ve never been in a job that would have been well enough paid to cover childcare costs where we live. I got made redundant the day after I found out I was pregnant which wasn’t ideal as I was out of work for the whole of my pregnancy with lockdown etc. Luckily I have a small business that I’d started a few years ago just as a hobby more than anything and I’ve worked hard to make that grow. Now I work most evenings, weekends and nap times on my small business. It’s tough as I never feel as though I get a break but it’s our only choice really and I feel incredibly grateful that it’s allowing me to bring some income in but I’m definitely surprised at how little help there is for families who want to work. I hope your KZfaq continues to grow so you can cut down on your office hours 💛

In ireland it's the same, hugely expensive and there is a creche shortage so my daughter has been on waiting lists for about 7 different creches for the last year and I've heard nothing back. Some are honest and just say there's no point going on the waiting list at all. You have to have their name down from pregnancy otherwise there's no chance. My baby is 1 week old and we’ve enrolled him in nursery for January as the waiting list is crazy. The daily costs are £36 a day 8:30-5:30 with meals. However I expect the costs to go up but I appreciate that’s a lot more affordable than most. The reason being is because it’s an unofficial nursery. The nursery’s are £50-70 a day here and we’re in Yorkshire not the south. 🥴 My husband is a civil servant and his working hours are Flexi as are mine so we’re considering half days at childcare and starting work at 5am 😂😂😂

This is such a huge stress of mine too. I've worked my ass off for years to get into the funeral industry, I have my dream job that I love and am working towards a qualification. My partner is in the armed forces so away a lot and hasn't been given the draft he was told he would be (one that meant he'd be home for 2 years) so now I'm stuck. If I stay in my job then childcare will cost a fortune, if I leave then I've lost everything I've worked hard for to get where I am. I'm going to try and make it work as once I have the qualification then my salary will increase. Issue is though, nursery placements are hard to come by now and he still doesn't have one and I go back to work in August.

You should get up to £500 towards nursery over the quarter (£2,000 a year)! So we work out what it will be for the entire year. Then work out what 20% is. Anything over £2,000 is the additional money we will have to put towards the “20%” Add that amount to the 80%. Then divide that by 12, pay that amount into the childcare account and should be topped up enough each time. It means you have a bit of a buffer on the shorter months but it’s there for the longer months! xxx

I'm lucky that our nursery fees are just one upfront charge, including anything she needs like food etc. We're also up north so I can imagine its also much more affordable. It does work out to be more than 2/3 of my entire wage, after the tax free deduction. It should not be this hard for women to leave their children in trusted childcare when they want to work. I wonder how many women who want to work don't because it is so expensive. I know why the price is high, but the government should be doing more to support parents...or work to increase wages!

I'm glad I'm not alone with this struggle. I'm a single mam to a 1 year old, in uni full time and work part time. I get a childcare grant from uni which pays 85%, that's still £35 a week then in summer when I'm not in uni I have to pay it all myself, with a part time job and slight top up from universal credit. They would think they want mums in full time work so make childcare affordable but thats obviously not the case 🙈

If I put her in nursery I would just be working to pay for it so no point. They really need to sort the childcare system out as they want mums to go back to work but make it impossible with the fees it’s so contradicting, roll on when she’s 3 (2023) so I can get 30 hours free and then up my hours at work.

So we will focus on that and I might start a home learning course along and maybe when they are a bit older I can get back into work again. It's a tough choice to make. Yes, there are worse things happening in the world, but that does not mean that your problems do not or should not matter. Never feel guilty for worrying about your personal problems and putting them first. Things could be much worse, but it doesn't mean that the cost of living crisis affecting so many of us in this country isn't bad, really bad! I really don't know what the government expects us to do as bills are rising massively and they are still planning to increase the NI tax next month. The cost of childcare just adds insult to injury. The pessimistic part of me reckons it's all so complicated so a lot of people don't bother with it, or don't realise it is available to them... With the HMRC childcare, if it helps, what I do is overpay into it each month so we have a buffer to try and avoid any sudden increases in costs. Not sure where you're moving to but I've got my fingers crossed it is a cheaper area for you as that will help! xx

This country is robbing working parents. I am so fed up with everything to a point where we have decided not to have anymore children. We are currently paying 35% (£1300) every month towards nursery - 1 daughter. It is also not fair that people are sitting and claiming all sort of benefits (UC) while we pay tax!!! In other countries in EU, the more children you have, the less tax you pay! Why can't they do something similar rather than paying us child tax £70!!! If this continues, we will probably resign from out full time jobs and claim benefit UC.

The government used to fund the FULL 40 hours a week of childcare at 100% funded but nowadays it’s 30 hours a week with 80% funded. They expect the woman to partially pay the other remaining 20% of childcare because there was too much fraud going on. Single mothers would commit benefit fraud by making fraudulent “free childcare” claims and then when the cheque came from the post, they’d either deposit it into their bank account or trade it for cash on the black market.

It's shocking to me that a society like UK doesn't have a much more equality-focused approach, because these costs means that a lot of moms will stay home and thereby get behind in saving up for retirement and loosing out on job opportunities! I know its up to the couple to choose who stays home, but the fact is that its more often the woman. I totally support people who CHOOSE to stay home with their kids, but it should be a choice and not because they cant afford care! Not everyone is suited for that role, and in the end our kids looses. I feel very blessed to live in Denmark, where we get a lot of financial supplement to daycare (and other kiddo-costs),
