----------
About Reality
----------
Reality Allah is an outreach worker with READI Chicago who spent 22 years in prison for murder. He was actively involved in a gang at a very young age and refers to the year he turned 11 as his “breakout year for violence.” Reality vowed to help others like him if he ever got out of prison, and the documentary follows him as he makes good on that promise.
----------
About FIRSTHAND: Gun Violence
----------
This multiplatform WTTW initiative puts a human face on hot-button issues that are important across the country, but especially in Chicago. Where conversations often dissolve into stereotypes or generalizations, WTTW is uniquely positioned to tell these important stories from personal, firsthand perspectives. As part of this initiative, we selects one issue to explore through a rich, multimedia approach, including 15 serialized videos documenting the stories of five people whose lives have been touched by the issue; feature and analysis stories about the people highlighted and the themes raised in the video series; TEDx-style talks by experts on the topic; and screenings and discussions with experts and policymakers who will extend the reach of the project into Chicago neighborhoods.
The number of Chicagoans lost to gun violence has declined over the past two years, but this persistent problem remains a fact of life for the residents of many Chicago neighborhoods. While Chicago’s gun violence gets plenty of attention from local and national media, the coverage centers on shootings as a criminal matter. If the resulting injuries get any recognition, the focus is on the physical wounds, and the wounded are depicted as victims with little agency.
Instead, Firsthand explores the psychological wounds resulting from gun violence, wounds which not only affect the injured person, but also ripple through entire communities. Learn about the healing process and see how the efforts of injured individuals and their communities impact that process. And discover how we play a small part in healing entire communities by healing a single person.

I lost my oldest son in 2012 in Milwaukee he was only 23 years old I moved to Lafayette Indiana when my second son was 4 years old had to move back to Chicago IL when he was 16 years old he's now about to graduate high school at Gage park a few weeks ago him and his friends got shot at on 56th western and ran in a gas station. I almost died with fear everyday he goes outside to school I'm super afraid no parent should to live in fear like this. ❤️ He's on his way to college soon and I just pray that Allah keeps his hand of protection over my baby and his friends. They are all some good young black men on their way to many beautiful things if only the thug's let them live.

I like what your doing good brother,I'm rooting for Chicago. It's so sad to hear about the young brothers killing each other. We are the only people who are the most loving towards other people,but destroy our own kind. Can you imagine if we worked together? Wake up brothers and sisters,dont let those sacrifices Dr King and others made be for nothing🕊🕊🕊

Lets stop ✋ letting them divide us and we will conquer them. Who do u relate to more ? Think of the most famous richest person who u can think of the same race as u but a different gender, then think of someone u know/know of but a different race and who's the same wealth status as u. Which people are like I more?

Wow. Much respect to you brother. It's sad...but some have given up on our youth. Given up at a time when the need is probably at an all ti.e high! I do similar service with an organization called "The King Of Kings" Gang Warriors Tour, here in NYC. WE do gang intervention in the NYC school system where we do various workshops ranging from "The hidden danger of drugs", to "HOW to respond when accosted by police". We also meet with the shot-callers of neighborhood gangs to mediate potential or on-going beefs, whether real or perceived. Again.....much respect to you and your movement!

Im from the UK, and even when our major cities had a spike in homicides and gun violence in the 1990s and early 2000s, our murder rate was nowhere near Chicagos murder rate and levels of gun violence, the most peaceful year in Chicago would still be 4 or 5 times more violent than the most violent year in a British city. In Manchester in the UK, we had 84 homicides in 2002, for a population of 2 million inhabitants, to the point where it was considered a huge crisis and the police went really hard on cracking down with 3 or 4 major gangs in the city that were driving most of the violence and the violence today is a lot less than it was. But all the police had to do was build a case against a small group of around 100 or so individuals and the violence and gun violence reduced dramatically, in Chicago there are so many individuals that are carrying and using guns, it is a lot harder to do.
@klettersteig599
@klettersteig599 2 жыл бұрын
A major factor in this problem is that Chicago is not prosecuting these murderers, the prosecutors office refuses to bring charges, if charges are brought, they are often released on very low or no bail. In 2021, 111 people were either wounded or killed by someone who was out on felony bond when they committed the crime. Chicago also has roughly 2 million people and we had over 800 homicides in 2021.

If you put national guard and reserve components from other states into Chicago to help stop gang related gun violence , I believe this can be achieved with proper leadership and body armor and give them the same power as police to arrest and to detain , a military presence could work because of the chain of military structure , give them the authority to patdown suspects and confiscate illegal firearms , and use lethal force only when necessary , you have to let these gang members know that you mean business .

What everyone fails to realize is the issue isn’t even gang violence anymore, yeah you got some assholes but 90% of the shootings are from previous shootings/ close death incidents/ death of your homie in the most gruesome ways? When your 8 years old dealing with this on the regular you form what the government wNts to ignore, PTSD! It’s real and a very big issue. Shooting out of fear of being shot first Smh

@@malexbetancourt8168 Hey , thanks for your comment , do you have any recommendations on how to stop the black on black violence , sorry I didn't think what this must do to children , but we have to find an answer , so that the children can feel safe and look to a better and bright future , I think we as a people are going to have to step up and involve law enforcement when we know a shooting or a murder is about to take place , this can help to save lives , even if we know people that have guns , and yes even our own family members , the black communitys need to unite and stand up for what is wright , let's stop the drug dealing and killing one another , and teach our children the love of the Lord Jesus Christ .

@@kevinpennington8615 I’m not the first nor last to say this but they need more funding for youth programs and people who have lived and changed their life for the better getting back into the community they grew up in and getting to the kids before the gangs do, I know easier said than done but along with that needs to come therapy somehow free or very affordable for the kids who are either traumatized already from past situations or kids who are attempting to steer the right way and fall victim to a traumatizing event while doing good. And a follow up with a teens center to learn different trades! In my city they did it and it’s worked for a long time , might be to late for some but never to late to at least stop or slow the cycle down each year you know

@Proud Mary from greedy rich assholes who have 8 billion in their savings to fund these type of programs , I promise you not one officer or military personnel is gonna scare someone in Chicago or Detroit enough not to shoot, it’ll be a blood bath! These people need HELP they don’t need use of power, it’s a threat and a threat will be treated as such for people who have had NO CHOICE but to fall victim to PTSD from what they were forced to experience as children. Like I said it’ll be a blood bath and innocent police/ military personnel will die for what? Becauee people didn’t want to help fund these programs and stop the cycle ?

It’s mainly because of a revolving door of bad influences, social media, lack of any positive family structure, low income households/neighborhoods and lack of opportunities. On top of that there’s endless revenge murders and easily influenced youth who want to be apart of something so they feel like they gotta prove themselves + impress others. If it takes murdering someone else to do that, they’ll oblige.
