Let's do some REALLY BIG PLANT CHORES! Join me while I attempt to wrangle and train my Monstera deliciosa houseplants to grow upwards instead of spreading out in every direction! What do you do with overgrown aerial roots? What to do when plants get big? Caring for massive monstera can sometimes be a challenge but it's such a rewarding giant plant to grow indoors 🤩
PLANT CHORES: EPISODE 7 🤼‍♂️🌱💪🔪✨
0:00 my biggest monstera deliciosa with huge roots

I inherited a BEAUTIFUL 35++ year old monstera (named Ruthie, after her late original owner) that had been growing outside. It's got leaves that are 2.5-3' long and it just put out two flowers that are going to turn to fruit! When the fruit is done I plan on cutting it in half; the lower leaves were REALLY ripped up in transit and it's just really not attractive. I also want to have a giant monstera outside in my yard as well so splitting it seems like the best plan. Right now she's in my window corner/flopping over my side table, but I have a two story wall and my partner is going to build a ladder so it can climb up freely. The room doesn't get the greatest light so I'll also be hanging those (pretty, imo) LG grow pendant lights around it with some smart timers. I have a huge beautiful pot I snagged for $40 at a big box store before the price quadrupled for that style and I can't wait to set everything up. I love you showing yours. Even though I have three (my other two haven't reached the extreme leaf size as my biggest/are really juvenile) it's one of my favorite plants and I love watching them. Please keep making videos. You have a great on air personality and it's just really nice to see someone in an apartment making it look lovely and wonderful. Also your mom seems really sweet.

Im actually thinking of buying a monstera BUT I would prefer to start with a REALLY tiny monstera and watch it grow into a big plant. Granted, it will take yearssss to be a big plant like yours but I absolutely love having small plants turn into bigger versions of themselves LOL idk if anyone else can relate😅

I’m doing the same! I bought one in March that had only one fenestrated leaf and now it has about 12 fenestrated leaves! Still very small compared to hers but it’s a good start 💚

I bought a 30cm baby monstera from Ikea.. 4 years later it produced 40cm fully penetrated leafs and is almost at an apartment ceiling height. As a noob, in the process I overwatered it several times, overfertilized and had to cut half the stems still it managed to grow into a very full n most beaut plant I own. I recommend to rotate it 1/4 every few weeks to avoid a problem showcased in this vid. don't be afraid to experiment with soil mixing till you find best suited for your climate .)

Bought mine last year and it's going from bad to worse. I think there is not enough light. The few leafs it produces in early summer are smaller and smaller and droopier. Fml

They grow really fast if you give them something to climb up and the proper light situation. I've cut off as many leaves as my newest big ones have grown in under 10 months. I get a new leaf every 3 - 4 weeks, and my smaller vining monstera has grown from a 10" pot to 5 vines that are all over 6 feet tall, and I've taken cuttings, and every time I cut 2 or 3 new shoots come out. My apartment gets all day bright indirect light, so that helps, but you can use a light bulb to help them along too.

Oh I can, and it's fascinating. And rewarding too. So many of my friends tell me that they kill plants and some have even given them to me to nurse for them! I enjoy it and they're amazed at how I can not only keep them alive, but actually under my care, they flourish! It's just a matter of having knowledge about each plant and their particular needs, I guess.

This has been so informative. Thank you for showing how and explaining everything as it came up. Like more about the aerial roots and how the crunchy sound isn't hurting them, it's just the outer layer cracking a bit.

Oh my gosh, beautiful specimens, like mine. I wish I would've found your video the other day when I was wanting to clean up 3 of mine that had aerial roots growing all over the living room! I read that it wouldn't hurt my 30yo plants, so I went for it and cut off almost all of the aerial roots ( they were like 12 feet long and under French door crevices and clinging to my wood floors!) and tied the branches/leaves up. I would've loved to have known about that clear ribbon you used. Like your room, it now looks so much cleaner and more spacious and i really feel my monsteras are happier. 😊

Hi Kaitlyn, I'm somewhat of a "plant person" that loves to watch KZfaq plant videos about people with their plants. I'm surprized that I hadn't seen your channel before. I'm from Lake Charles, LA where we enjoy a solidly subtropical climate, being in southern Louisiana about 60 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, so it's warm here almost year round and I only have to move my plant collection inside a few times a year. Now I have the opportunity to subscibe to a "planty" channel hosted by a certified horticulturist! I'll be making comments from time to time and good luck with your collection.🪴

With you knowledge of the Monstera, I was wondering if you would order one from an online nursery and have it shipped to your house if you couldn’t find one in your area? I am really asking if you think the plant is tough enough to endure the shipping process. And, lastly, I was wondering if you know how old is your Monstera…just curious as to how fast they grow.
