Academic Matthew Alford explores fresh evidence in a Hollywood cold case.
A university professor, Matthew Alford, suspects the CIA killed a Hollywood screenwriter Gary DeVore to protect a government secret. Alford believes it was an assassination, disguised as a car accident. So, he contacts a filmmaker to document the evidence he has accumulated. When Alford receives a phone call warning him to leave the case alone, he heads to Hollywood to conduct his own investigation.
With unprecedented access to key witnesses and the family of the deceased, he builds a case for murder and thinks he has uncovered the real reason the Hollywood screenwriter found himself in deep water. Later, however, it becomes clear that there is a fundamental flaw in his case for a CIA assassination. He finds compelling which supports the idea that the man might not be dead at all and his death was faked.
Alford returns to the UK torn between the two hypotheses. His last hope is an informant who has agreed to help find proof despite his concerns that it’s dangerous. Unfortunately, days after the informant agrees to help, he too is found dead in a shopping mall. The audience is left to decide what really happened as Alford appears to lose his sanity and succumbs to an investigation entangled in mystery, scandal, threat and a hunger for the truth.

My husband Stephen worked with Gary and was friends with him. He ran into Gary at a restaurant about 6 months before his disappearence. Gary told him about his Panama project he was working on and that he had been warned to stop writing it. The only thing Stephen thinks is missing from this doc. is the fact that Gary mentioned, regarding the screenplay, obviously the drug running and money laundering etc but also Gary had mentioned that the U.S. was also (in that Panama War) experimenting with unknown new technology and weapons. Sounded to him like directed energy weapons, which we are just now learning about

I grew up in an area with tens of thousands employed in military research, you'd be shocked what the elementary school kids in that community knew just from their parents griping around the dinner table. It isn't out of the ordinary someone might get word of this type of thing. Just a disclaimer, I don't believe anything without concrete proof, and as far as government secrets and spycraft, secret weapons, etc. there's so much misinformation no-one can ever really know anything about these topics. He started off so passionate and determined to find the truth. As we make way towards the end, he loses all hope, all motivation, the passion no longer there and no longer cares it seems. CIA really spooked him out of finishing this. I see no reason why he would dress up in a clown costume and call his video entertainment and destroy his credibility. At that point why put out the video? But he did it to let people know subliminally that they got to him. This is the government we trust in everyday, just remember that.

Well to try and expose the CIAs dirty closet in public is pretty much a death sentence. In regards to him in a clown suit and denying everything at the end is one of two scenarios. 1. The agency made contact with him as a result we see the camera focusing on his children which indicates his family was threatened if he continued. 2. See scenario 1.

Exactly! I think it emphasizes how he, like most of us, never could believe a government agency would target innocent civilians in the US, but then we learn as we grow older; they have for over a hundred years and do so on a scale that would horrify all of us. Erik Prince and his other Blackwater kill squad who got away with threatening Congressmen directly, instead of being locked up in prison like Jan 6 patriots set up by FBI, got rewarded with jobs in CIA. They also have a close association with the Clintons. They have incorporated the worst psychopaths, which were also used to kill David Crowley and his family. Alford has every reason to be afraid.

@@SK-xn1pv My byfriend was a Hollywood actor, starring or acting in over 30 films. He married a woman from France connected to the 'agencies' (ps, they are work together) and his young year old son told him of men hitting mommy. Hhis 4 year old son was then threatened to be hurt if he talked to his daddy and my boyfriend recorded that last conversation on a micro cassette tape. Suddenly his son was stolen and then both children(he had 2) were taken to France, even thouh he had a lawyer in place to stop this. The lawyer was the wife of a high up political man (oopsshe filed the papers in the wrong juridiction (oops). The games began for him. Being followed by cars with matching license plates, constant breakins, attempts on his life and then yes, blacklisted from Hollywood and Canada. He couldn't understand how they got into safety boxes in banks( 3 in fact) or how all encompassing this was. He ended up homeless, mostly from 97-2000. There is much much more but I just want to say you are over the target when you say ''would target innocent civilians ''. Hellywood played a huge part and yes, they are connected to all these psychopaths from the agencies. Ronan Farrow wrote and great article about Harvey Weinstein and his hiring of Black Cube called (I think) Army of Spies. If you threaten to expose, they put the wolves on you. With Black Cube they allude to themselves as being 'ex' mo$$ad. Ha, what a joke. This is a film that is really very appropriate for this time. Obviously, he and/or his family was threatened. And in the end, you have a choice. Is the truth of what happened to Devore more important than what will happen to my family? Well, the answer may be the former, but you have to live with the latter. It points to that overarching question: does evil always win in this world? Well, most of the time. And that is why I must, I simply HAVE to believe in justice in the next, or life would be utterly, unbearably meaningless.

I will say this, Gary DeVore was a good screenwriter. I read his first draft of Running Scared when it was about two NYPD detectives about to retire. It was a fun, tight script and 90% of the comic situations remained in the finished film! The studio wanted Paul Newman and Gene Hackman to star in it. However, that was before Director Peter Hyams got on board with writer Jimmy Huston and changed the setting and made the main characters much younger. Also, at the time of his death, he was writing a script or about to write a script for an A-list actress who said Gary had a meeting with her the day after he "died". I think the actress was Jane Fonda, but it was so long ago, I can't remember exactly. It might have been Goldie Hawn or Marsha Mason or Sally Field. It was an older actress.

The question I wanted answered is why would Gary decide he wanted a brand new life in exchange for his script? He could just have easily handed the script over & moved on with his family if he was willing to give up his work and "they" were willing to let him live. To stage a suicide or accident & chop off someone's hands is a lot of work to accommodate someone they could just knock off... The end made me think I was watching an April fool's joke doco. To declare he was going to destroy his own credibility...less staged ways of doing that? Unless he's trying to let there be no doubt he was coerced without saying he was. But it gave me the creeps & now I feel weird. Big questions unanswered that have made me wish I didn't bother watching this.

Sometime between Monday January 24th and today the 28th the Wikipedia page for Gary DeVore was heavily edited. It had way more information including a list of about 10 other people involved in the case that died mysteriously or committed suicide. What’s alarming is that there is no evidence in the edit history to verify this or view the previous version. If anyone else saw the more detailed version of the wiki page please comment.

It’s interesting on wiki that they say his murder hasn’t been solved. There isn’t a body, or any shred of evidence that he’s even dead yet they’re saying “murder”. Why does it feel like it’s constant mental warfare when it comes to our govt and it’s citizens?!?

David Blundy was the journalist killed by a sniper in El Salvador in November 1989, but I'm afraid that it had nothing to do with the Noriega story- Blundy was in El Salvador to report on the ferocious civil war and was caught in crossfire while walking down a street there. More than 30 journalists died during that 10-year civil war.

You noticed how he said towards the end, I'm enjoying my life. 10 to 1 Mr. Sands spoke with him and explained the actual reality that he was facing, which was take this story no further if you value your life and the life of your family. The truth will never be known, Unless someone that was involved in the operation comes forward with actual concrete evidence. But we all see how that worked out for Eric snowden. There will be no whistle blowers giving up their freedom for a dead man.

I'd suggest fans of this type of controversial material have a look.

His hands could have been removed during torture to force him to tell them of anyone else who may have known about this. I’m unsure of the waters the vehicle was found it but I suppose it could be plausible they were eaten. Highly unlikely and I would think they would be able to tell the difference in an autopsy.
