Do you want to stop ageing? Do you want to live forever? Can science help you cheat death? In this pioneering documentary, Professor Rose Anne Kenny takes us through the science and the consequences of living longer lives.
Imagine for a moment that old age became a thing of the past. Today, for better or for worse, it would appear that eternal life may soon be a reality. Some scientists are forecasting that the only way many humans will die is if they are shot or run over by a bus.
The programme unveils what is happening in age prevention, shows how we can lengthen our own life spans and explains how some scientists now believe we are closer than ever to finding the Elixir of Life.
Such power over life itself poses many profound questions: what impact is it going to have on our societies? What preparations should our governments be making for an ever-ageing population? Do people really want to live longer and suffer the inevitable weakening of their capacities? And is it morally right to transcend human fallibility and assume the role of God?

It is not only about how long we live, but the quality of life, the focus should be on "eliminating" age related diseases.

Both my great grandparents died at the age of 98 and 94. Both are from the deep south from Mississippi. One thing I have noticed about them is that they very RARELY ate restaurant or fast food. They always cooked food they mostly grew (They were farm owners.) I believe strongly that what you eat as well as the environment you live in plays a major role.

I don't see a problem as long as we control the birth rate. Old people could work until advanced age as long as young people spend more time studying and giving social work, for example if people graduated at 35, they would be more prepare for high skilled work. Now you have to retire when you are the most experienced.

I think Aubrey should keep away from the spotlight and stay in the labs. I get why he speaks out but his appearance & his voice unfortunately helps other not take him seriously on an already perceived caricature of science. I think the person who should be in the public more about gerontology->transhumanism is Ned David. David Sinclair is good but his voice will put you to sleep and he looks like he has plastic surgery and botox.

I would have loved to start freaking out about death at 25. Would have pursued gerontology since it seems to be undervalued. That's when you get in and next thing you know it becomes the new IT. This would be more rewarding knowing you can prevent death and suffering for all ages so they can pursue more of what they want out of life before death unexpectedly takes them.

So-so film, more people living to the full life-span of 3 score years & 10 due to modern medicine is quite different from 'the end of aging', & the rest is just out bland padding, platitudes & stuff you can get of a Wikipedia article on the subject.

Sure, we are living longer, but in Europe, mortality rates are still higher than births. So eventually we will have lots of old people and no young to take care of them.

My great grandmother lived to be 102 and managed pretty well, but she fell outside during winter and broke her arm, which did't heal, so she basically died because of that. Otherwise she was pretty tough old lady. She drank, smoked and sang dirty songs. She was born in 1899 and could still remember her childhood and youth. We visited her on her grand jubilee of 100 and she told us lots of stories, sang and did some vodka shots! I know I will not live up to that age, but it comforts to know, that maybe my kids will have her genes.

Not a chance. In today's modern world, they are out to kill you off as quick as possible. Unless you disconnect from the modern world, you WILL NOT make it nearly as long as 90-100.

Bodies don't wear out in the normal sense of the word, they are pre-programmed to last a certain number of years. Large animals tend to live much longer than very small animals, but there are exceptions. A 1lb rat lives for about 5 or 6 years, but a one pound parrot lives for 50 or 60 years. It has yet to be demonstrated that the wear and tear on a rat's body is 5 times as much as on a parrot's body. Healthy lifestyle is the only sure fire way of living to an advanced age at present, and until much more sophisticated methods are developed a maximum of around 150 years is as much as we can reasonably hope for, and that will be for one person in 10 billion, a record breaker.
