On the outskirts of Plattsburgh, New York, a taxi industry that transports asylum seekers escaping to Canada has been booming. Fares are scooped up at the local bus station and whisked to an infamous irregular border crossing point. Road to Roxham is a look inside this community of drivers, following Mary Ann Ero, the owner-operator of “Spanky’s Taxi.”

I moved to Canada from Poland in 1987 when I was 9 years old, it took my parents 5 years to get permission from immigration to move to Canada and then we waited another 5 years to get a Canadian citizenship. So it pisses me off when I see people just walking in to Canada and cutting in line of people that are already waiting for years to legally move to Canada. This is so unbelievably unfair. The messed up thing is that they expect money and an apartment right away, that's paid by us the tax payers. When we moved to Canada my parents had less then $900 dollars, so my father started working in construction 3 days later and my mom got a job about 2 weeks later at Sears without once asking the Canadian tax payers for a hand out.

@Joe What are you talking about had it hard, where did I say that? My parents were actually lucky to find jobs quickly in Canada?. It's normal procedure to wait 3 to 6 years to get approved by immigration to enter Canada for permanent residence. My parents did everything the Canadian immigration law requires. It's you that has the dumbass logic. How is it fair for thousands of people that do everything legally to wait 3 to 6 years, while others just fly to US and jump the border to Canada?. How is that fair to people that do everything by the Canadian immigration law. So you're okay with people jumping the border and asking for handouts while law abiding immigrants wait years for approval to enter Canada?. Basically you're saying those that do everything by law and don't ask for hand-outs, to you that's dumbass logic?. Me or my family have never asked for a penny from Canadian tax payers, after highschool I joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where I served for 11 years as a pilot, because I wanted to give back something to this great country that accepted my family. While others just enter illegally and complain how they don't get enough money from the government or how their government paid house is too small. But I guess to you it's dumbass logic to do everything legally. So I won't wast my time explaining anything else.
@AviationNut
@AviationNut 4 жыл бұрын
@Joe I just want others to follow the Canadian immigration law, just like 95% of immigrants do, instead of jumping the border. Waiting is a normal immigration process, so my parents were willing to wait, instead of flying to the US and then jumping the border into Canada. The law abiding immigrants wait the few years for the process to get permission from the Canadian immigration, while others just cross illegally into Canada from the US. How hard is that for you to understand?. It's unfair for 95%l of law abiding people to have to wait for permission from the Canadian immigration for 3 to 6 years while other simply don't care and cross illegally from the US into Canada. Why don't they go through the same process of entering Canada legally instead of jumping the border, it's not fair to the 95% of people that go through the whole immigration process. Really, how hard is that for you to understand?. That's like let's say you standing in line for an hour and suddenly a new person comes and just goes in front of the line instead of waiting properly like everyone else in line. This is not just about me or my family, it's about 95% of law abiding immigrants who wanted to live in Canada, they all had to go through the immigration process which takes 3 to 6 years, while the other 5% of non law abiding immigrants simply doesn't care and don't want to wait and cross the border illegally from the US into Canada and they instantly want money and a place to live. How is that fair to the 95% of people that do it legally and don't ask for handouts. I don't know any other way to explain this to you, everyone gets it except you, you think it's dumbass logic. I just give up. Do you have some learning disability or something?.

People who think Americans are so awful now because we are sick and tired of being milked by the government to pay for all the freebies illegal immigrants come here to get should take a better look at other countries and how they deal with this. America's not paying for a legal immigrants A great many contribute to the overall health of the economy. I believe that they have a right to enter the country As long as they have no criminal background And they have an aptitude to learn the official language They should be able to have a chance to become citizens. The United States and Canada willingly allowed millions of illegal immigrants to to land on its shores for the past 400 years. Those crimes have still not been requited. The hypocrisy is laughable.

What a coincidence I've been on that bus from Boston to Montreal and back but crossing legally!When I did it was about 15 years ago and the present situation hadn't yet developed.Well the way I look at it the taxi drivers are just there to take people from A to B not to judge what they are going to do once they get to B.Indeed if the taxi drivers are blamed what about Greyhound bringing the up from the big towns or Amtrak bringing them on trains but obviously bus and railways don't fleece people on fares and charge everyone the same ticket cost.

Bull Durham The illegals that live in Canada not only learn English, they learn proper English grammar? Wow, that’s very different from the illegals in the US. Here many don’t bother learning English, because there is no need. You can live in one of the many different ethnic enclaves all over the country. There are sections of the country where a US citizen would feel like the alien because everything (stores, streets, etc.) is in a foreign language (all kinds). Some learn just enough English to get by in their menial labor jobs. Their children grow up in environments where English is not spoken correctly and/or their vocabulary is severely limited. This sets them up for failure in their school careers. It’s a mess. It’s no wonder 63% of non-native households receive government assistance compared to 35% of native households (Center for Immigration Studies).

They apply for asylum a.k.a protection saying they are being persecuted in their home country or any other alibis when the real reason is primarily economic so most of them are denied and I believe only 1 or 2% gets to stay and the rest are deported back to their home countries. For those parents who brought their US born kids with them they'll be separated from their children coz they will be sent to their countries of origin while the kids are sent to the US.

Charity starts with the problems at home but maybe you should travel a bit and see how immigrants fare in countries outside the Anglosphere and Western Europe. I lived in China for a year and a half and you would not believe the lack of representation, hiring policy unashamedly based on race and lack of happiness with migrants over there.

The video title needs refinement and add the word 'ILLEGAL'. There is no need to go to Canada and be arrested when you are already in the US illegally. I understand the plight of these people but immigration laws are there for a reason and must be upheld. If violators are tolerated, it is like opening the borders and let anyone come in. That is not right and outright dangerous.
