I think people misunderstand this episode with the whole transgender thing, isn't the whole joke of Douglass's character being that he's a complete idiot and an immature man-child? That the lesson of this episode besides the internet joke is that his reaction over finding out April is a man shows his immaturity to the extreme and that by the end (credit scene) he misses April and still loves her? Obviously the episode didn't need a physical fight to achieve this lesson, but I think that's playing upon the immaturity off Douglass as a character.

The problem is that as of now... do we know what the joke was? Why not both? It's a funny and well-written enough show. Unfortunately, no matter how funny it is, there is an elephant in the room - Graham Linehan wrote it. It shouldn't detract from how funny the episode is, but it becomes more difficult for some people to justify when written by a man who destroyed his own career with his Douglas-like "once a man, always a man" beliefs. I still find it hilarious, but I can understand why someone would feel suspicious and uncomfortable.

honestly, it was hilarious when i first saw it in 2008, and it's still hilarious af, as is the entire show. absolute classic. if you don't find certain things funny, its ok, to each their own. there should not be any boundaries set upon comedy, or we are all fucked. to me, there's a place for laughing at absolutely anyone and every group there is. also, a sitcom is not supposed to be tasked with giving great representation of anything omg, it's supposed to make you laugh and feel good. there's plenty of demeaning white cis female portrayals out there, but somehow i don't ever get offended cos it's not about me, it's the character. laugh at yourself, and no one will ever bring you down.

I don't find it problematic, either. It might be, but it isn't to me. Thing is, telling people what they should or shouldn't find distasteful/offensive isn't our place any more than it's our place to tell people what they should think or feel about anything. There's this thing that happens when some people who don't get offended like to pat themselves on the back and give themselves credit for not being offended and lecture others about how they shouldn't be offended at comedy. The problem isn't thinking something is offensive somehow - the problem is expecting something to be closed down, etc, simply on the basis of you finding it offensive. The person mentioned in the letter in the video didn't call for anything to be banned. They accused the bit of being bigoted - admittedly without saying why - but didn't demand that it be 'cancelled'. I don't agree that it's bigoted, but am fine with that person not liking it personally.

For me i liked the dive into nerd culture. It wasnt in the media so much and it was just nice to get a show to validate me. Fun fact: america is one of the only places to have insults for smart people.(nerd, geek, poindexter, etc) Some of these jokes, not just in this episode, seemed kinda old hat. It just didnt land well and some jokes just dont age well. Bigoted? Nah. Reynholm is a strawman character to begin with so they can explore some of those more raunchy jokes.

It was pretty bigoted towards redheads. Whilst I understand the comments about this episode being bigoted, for the most part, it's relatively progressive in its portrayal of a transgender woman in 2008. It might be a bit dated in terms of the language that is used and the montage including her standing in the pictures you put your face in (see James Acaster) as the man isn't great. However, for the most part, I see a transgender woman who is portrayed as a real woman and not as a man in a wig as you might have seen in previous sitcoms. Who is trying to be accepted in society and if we're being realistic transgender people weren't as accepted in 2008 as they are today, so she's trying to be herself whilst being clear to Douglas about her identity. The fight scene might also be seen as problematic but is a question no one really has the answer for when it comes to transgender women in sports, Dave Chappelle has made jokes about it because comedy is the only place where it can really be explored. So why is it more problematic when making the same joke in a tv programme as a stand up special? Also, let's be clear that Douglas was never meant to be a likeable character that you route for so his somewhat transphobic attitude isn't really a problem as you're not supposed to like him as a character anyway. As a society, we become more progressive and accepting with each passing day which is great but it doesn't mean we should discard every single piece of media that doesn't meet current standards.

I hate when people call this episode bigoted because I would dare those people to show one way in which being trans is represented in a negative light. There is none. The show represents Douglas as the intolerant, unaccepting arsehole who gives up his dream woman because of a silly petty thing such as she used to be a man. Douglas is the only person to come out of this episode negatively. April even gets her own back by publishing a smear article about him and the final scene shows him crying because he knows what he has given up, and he misses her. He is in a worse place because of his own actions. No one to blame but himself. So tell me again how the episode is bigoted?

the fight scene was the funniest thing id seen in the series, yeah its fashionable to appear woke, ive not met any transgender ppl that would be offended by this portrayal, (perhaps its a generational disconnect). i will add the pure hatred for the character Douglas on your faces every time hes on screen kinda gives away a preconceived bias. he is ofc meant to be facetious and despicable, pretty sure thats a regional disconnect with comedy. id suggest watching Black Books or Black Adder, (both classics), but they center around "meanies" too.

It just shows the only reason they aren't openly racist, sexist, homophobic etc in public is entirely because they are vaguely worried about people's reactions and hate "them" for it. also @Jeminal - that's not bias, its literally a reaction. its definitely a regional disconnect, I think if this came out today I'd definitely say they could do better but given the time it came out and the archetype of Douglas it's not terrible in context, just sometimes hard to watch. I don't get what is supposed to be so offensive about the episode. Douglas (who plays someone who is supposed to be generally offensive), falls for April who he doesn't realise used to be a man. Note that April is the more mature of the pair. When he finds out April used to be a man he acts immaturely and ends the relationship. But at the end of the episode he misses April. So the episode seems to if anything be sympathetic to the trans character.

This episode didn't show trans in a negative light. It showed up the bigots in a negative light. April deserved better and she rightly kicked Douglas' ass. The cherry on the top was when Douglas realised he'd dumped the only person he felt emotionally close to because he's an idiot. Something about these shows is that there's a payoff for everything you see on screen. Something American shows don't always do. Moss and Roy got their payoff when the entire room fell for their prank; something that was the opposite of what they expected, but was 1000 times better. Douglas is a womaniser. He finally found the woman of his dreams. His stupidity caused him to lose that woman, and the pay off is him sitting alone in bed crying over her.

On first viewing I don't think the trans issues presented in the episode are all that bigoted... but as you look more at the episode with the knowledge that trans people found it offensive then some of the issues start to come to the fore... I think the whole premise that Douglas struggles with the idea of his girlfriend being trasngender is probably relatable to a lot of men... However there are aspects of the episode that play upon April still having very stereotypically masculine qualities, and her genuine anguish at not being seen as a woman is played as melodramamatic comedy and with a laughter track over it. Likewise Douglas regrets breaking up with April - but this too is played for laughs. The fact that April and Douglas end up in a fist fight where they are evenly matched physically is there to hammer home that despite having undergone reassignment April is still in the eyes of the show and its writer, a man. And given Graham Linehan's subsequent comments about trans people, paints this episode in a very poor light. Channel 4 here in the UK took the decision to remove the episode from its streaming service which given that they are perhaps the UK's Wokest TV studio is unsurprising.

I think there’s a place for bigoted and generally unethical characters like Douglas on TV, provided they are handled correctly, and their immoral actions are portrayed in a negative light. The Douglas plot wasn’t handled well, from either a comic or ethical perspective: the jokes were mostly lazy stereotypes, and they used the bigotry of Douglas itself to be funny. Then again it’s not completely bad because it does display Douglas as being in the wrong to some degree, it could just make it more clear how serious the issue is. Ok the other hand, The internet prank is LEGENDARY 😂

Douglas is disgusting and makes this episode near-unwatchable, which sucks because I find the entire internet subplot with Jen hilarious. I was also really disappointed when I first watched this episode because I was pleasantly surprised at first, when Douglas was initially really accepting of April. I thought that was going to be this one redeeming thing about his character, such as it is-- that yeah, he's a massive lech, but he's equal opportunity about it, like he's genuinely open to sleeping with everyone, no judgment. But then the joke just ended up being that he's both an idiot and bigoted, and that whole fistfight, the way they treated April in that... I can't even get into it. I always want to recommend the IT Crowd to people because of Moss and Roy, but everything involving Douglas makes it really fucking hard.

You really don't seem to get the point of satire do you? Here's a better question, in the end of the episode does Douglas seem happy about his actions or just happy in general? No he doesn't. His actions made him miserable because his own judgement stopped him from being with the woman he loved and he paid the prices. Never is April actually seen as being bad cause of her change, its all from Douglas's point of view. It never said "if you change gender you don't deserve love" it said "if you judge someone you love and stop seeing them for things like this, you don't get happiness" start understanding the satire and realise its a comedy using real issues as a way to tell jokes without being disrespectful. If someone gets offended then oh well who cares? Comedy should not be censored for satire like this. Douglas got the unhappy ending cause he refused to be with the woman he loved over her past. How is the episode saying that being trans is a bad thing? This episode isn't saying that, it's saying to not judge someone or actively hate due to them being trans. And they did that in a funny and memorable way. Stop trying to stop satire and comedy like this, it's you who's the problem for not getting the comedy and message.
