It does seem that Hollywood is not just an American industry but essentially a “white” industry that is committed to storytelling from “the white perspective”. If you are white you get the role, it doesn’t matter if you ‘re not even an American. That, for me, is disconcerting. Some influential directors, like Ridley Scott, are unabashedly “old school” he just refuses to tell a story unless it’s through white actors. He recruited an Australian man to play the pharaoh in Exodus and a white English boy to play a jewish child-god. His latest film Alien Covenant depicts a major space expedition in a hundred years time but there is just one non-white “token” black actor in the whole crew. It’s not even realistic, it’s almost embarrassing. Of course, the future of space expedition should be told once again from the white angle alone.
