Why use Back Button Focus (BBF)? It will change the way you lock focus and leave you wondering why manufactures do not default to this setting.
I created a similar video for Nikon users using the D3400 ( • Got your first DSLR (i... ) and received many requests to do the same for Canon users. I decided to demo with the Canon T6i but this technique applies to most Canon entry level cameras (T6, T5i, T5, etc.). If you have not used BBF, I suggest you give it a shot for a few days ... give the new technique time to resonate/gel:).

You are right, once I discovered it years ago it's the very first thing I do with a new body! Reset the focus, turn it off the shutter button and switch it to the back! And it works for ALL the photography anyone might do, just remember that's the focus when you use your wide angle lenses (which I forgot when I first did it) as just about everything looks like it's in focus with a wide angle.

Thank you immensely...it’s just what I was looking for to assign autofocusing on my older Canon. I was doing back button focusing the hard way-it worked but I kept thinking this older Canon could be set to reassign the focus function-you did it-it works perfectly on my camera. Be well and thanks again.

WWWOW!! Do you know what you've just done!? You've just blown my mind with this info, which the manual, with all its jargon, doesn't explain very well at all! I've just about given up on it, thinking the 600D that I had inherited from a dear relative some years ago, but only started learning to use now, didn't have that function. In fact, I didn't even know that this model was called a T6i in the US, so I started watching your video with little hope of satisfaction. What I also have to say, however, is that on my camera the * is the back button to which the AF is assigned, which doesn't have any other function, little used or otherwise, that I can find in Shooting mode anyway.

youre a fucking life saver. I finally ventured into using manual settings on my rebel t5 that my brother gave me a year ago. for some reason my auto focus doesnt work in manual and with my noviceness I wasted an entire night of shooting by trying to use the manual ring, changing zooms, touching my optical lens and having blurry photos by not remembering to focus. this makes it so much easier to get focus while taking a shot. fucking thank you!!!

RealWorld I’m looking forward to giving it a try. One question: do I need to put the auto focus operation in AI Servo? Or does it matter. Thanks again.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 жыл бұрын
You do not have to stay in AI Servo but I would recommend doing so:). Why? This will allow you power and flexibility with the BBF. If you want to take a portrait, simply place the focal point on the eye (I suggest focusing on the eye for portraits:)) > press the back button to lock focus > release the back button > recompose if needed > take the shot:). If you are trying to photo a moving subject, place the focal point on the subject > press and HOLD the back button > take the shot(s):) ... AI Servo will easily work in both situations eliminating the need to think about what mode you are in or if you need to switch, etc. AF is controlled by your willingness to hold the back button:). As mentioned, once you start to use BBF, I suspect you will like it:).

Hi Thanks for asking me for more feedback regarding the sound. That distortion that was happening on the last video is definitely not happening here. It’s much closer to the good sound found on the videos I mentioned before. The only thing I found was the “S”s sound a bit too cutting. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help other than telling you what my ears are telling me. Generally that’s the only concern I need to have, and then just tell the sound engineers “More of this. Less of that.” and they know what I mean and want, so, my technical knowledge in this area is fairly limited. Thanks again for the great content and keep looking forward to more All the best

@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) Both Nikon and Canon are great but I like how Nikon has removed the AA (anti-aliasing) filter from their entry level line (the D3300 and D3400). The AA filter tends to inadvertently soften images and many photographers would like to see removed. Nikon removed the AA filter from their top-end line and they now remove it from they entry line which is great in my opinion. Canon is a beast when it comes to focus - something they have always done well in my opinion:). I do not think you would go wrong with either but if given the choice, I might lean towards Nikon.

RealWorld thanks for the tip. I’m looking for an entry level with an articulating screen. T6i or an equivalent in the Nikon line. Do you have any thoughts on that? I will be using it to do short videos for Facebook and KZfaq.

I would seriously consider the Nikon D5500 ... a great camera in my opinion:).

RealWorld thank you. I love Nikon but needed an articulating screen and wasn’t sure which to go with in their line. I had the D3400 but sold it because I knew I needed something that could do both videos and still do great stills.

Glad to be of help:). The D5500 has an articulating touch screen which works well:).

How about t7i?

back button focus should work in a similar manner on the T7i as it does on the T6i ... not a problem:).

LOL - Nikon is solid with a nice lineup of equipment. Hats off to Nikon for removing the AA filter (anti-aliasing filter which typically results is a relative softer image).

I hate when they use the term "entry level".... I makes it sound like you have cheap crap!

I know the feeling:) ... keep in mind that 'entry level' cameras were once considered professional and are fully capable. Today, the term simply refers to starting levels from the manufacturer's perspective.

Just want to say....you really need to make some of your videos A LOT shorter, anything over 10mins is "too long" imo

LOL - I thought the same a few years ago when I started making videos:). This video is just over 5 mins which is good but I do have others well over 10:). I found that the length of video depends on the subject matter. I would much rather focus on the subject instead of time. I feel people can always skip ahead ... if I leave information out of any given video, the questions come flying:).

RealWorld I think if your content is great (yours is) then Time is irrelevant.
