I like how the game let's you play as the Silver Shroud in the early game, but then as the Tommy Gun becomes quickly outpaced by other weapons, you kinda just have to grow out of it like it was your teenage superhero phase.

Even with the spray and pray I still find myself burning through ammo like crazy with the Thompson. The combat rifle is a much more efficient way to use .45 in my opinion. This doesn't even pale in comparison to the Thompson in New Vegas whatsoever.

The Spray n' Pray uses the same ammo as the Overseer's Guardian, which is better in my opinion. Along with being unsafe to use in tight areas, that bumps it down a little bit for me. I bet this gun would be sick in the hands of companions, though

Fun Fact: For most weapons in fallout 4 the compensator reduces recoil even more than the later muzzle break and in some cases almost removes recoil from most cases.

Even as powerful as Spray and Pray is, the explosive pipe rifle is just as good and has easier to get ammo Also hip fire though high on the strength tree helps with the way most people use it.

I usually switch the Overseer’s Guardian to a different caliber as soon as I can anyway. Doing a survival run and went to get it early and Clover was parked outside Vault 81 as I was leaving. Figures.

I like how the regular Tommy Gun gets outclassed by other weapons rather quickly, but you can beat the whole game with the Spray'n'pray. I remember literally beating Nuka-World with it to the point of anihilating all of the raider gangs. The only issue was my character being a typical glass cannon. Also it would be so much better if you could give Kent your own Tommy Gun to apply a silver "skin" to it. Instead I just attached the explosive effect to the silver SMG (not so much of an exploit if you have bought S&P beforehand)

It's a weirdly underpowered weapon given that .45 ACP is a pretty big round IRL. The combat rifle and radium rifle are a much better use of the ammo. Interestingly, the attachment pack mod gives it a 10mm receiver, making it a pretty decent weapon for commandos with its much larger magazine compared to the automatic 10mm pistol. I honestly think vanilla FO4 should have gone this route from the start.

Spray n Pray is pretty great but the base Tommy gun is pretty meh.

I’m pretty sure they made a cut down stock the default so much is because full stocks clip through the arms and Bethesda wanted to avoid people seeing npc’s like that all the time.

One of the few instances in which the equivalent pipe weapon (the.38 automatic pistol/rifle) is the better option solely by virtue of using a more common ammo type

The problem with the SMG/Tommygun is that the Pipe Pistol, modded as an automatic weapon, is the exact same damage and rate of fire, firing the more common and cheaper .38 ammo, and weighs less than half. There is literally zero reason to use one. Spray and Pray has a good affix for an automatic weapon, so that's good, but the Kiloton Radium Rifle is basically this, but actually decent damage and bonus radiation damage on top of it, and for an automatic weapon person, probably the best weapon in the game barring something like a Wounding Handmade Rifle or something. Never use this weapon unless you actively want a challenge. It is *possible* to beat the game with this weapon, but it will be in spite of it rather than because of it.

I'd agree that the right Legendary makes or breaks a lot of guns in FO4. An Explosive Fatman for example is pretty meh as is an Instigating Tommy Gun. Reverse the Legendary effects though and the weapons become epic. That said I'd rather farm for an Explosive Pipe Gun than go with the Spray and Pray. Much lighter and with a cheaper ammo that isn't competing with another, more useful, gun in my inventory.

Well, tommy gun is like a downgrade version of automatic combat rifle. Even using the same ammo. Not to mention, after visiting the far harbor, basically this gun is never used.

Tommy gun is useless in FO4. Utterly and irredeemably.

It's so you can have more customization, RON! It's fun to have to start with the crappiest gun stock imaginable and work your way up, RON! Stop complaining about the guns, Ronald. It's a fictional universe, and a video game as well. 😠

Oddly enough the double barrel being cut down and without a stock by default sorta makes sense in fallout specifically. Not for like in-universe rules or something, but basically because its been the default for the gun since fallout 1

The only time the submachine gun is remotely decent is when you get it with the wounding/plasma infused/freezing effect. Addendum. i avoid mentioning the explosive effect because on anything with a high rof it can lag out the game looking at you explosive minigun that ate my 4070
