Rear Dome Light Repair (3rd Gen 4runner)

In this video, we show you how to address a fairly common problem with the rear dome light function on your 3rd Gen 4runner. There's an electrical switch inside the locking mechanism that signals the dome light to turn on when the hatch is opened and turn off when the hatch is closed. When you have a non-working rear dome light, and it's not simply a bunt-out bulb, most likely it is a problem with the switch inside the hatch lock. We show you how to remove the remove the locking mechanism from the rear hatch and then show you how to open up the locking mechanism to investigate the problem with the switch. Finally, we document how we fixed the switch to get the rear dome light working properly.

That’s why I love Toyotas. Light-switch stops working, take apart the lock-repair the wiring, back to working as new. Can’t do that on an old Fiat, Chevy or ford, for the most part anyhow. Edit: good stuff. One of my favorite Toyota channels!! God bless~

Great video. This may solve another problem I'm having with my factory alarm. I've noticed occasionally, after dis-arming and opening the rear hatch, the car would lock and re-arm ( with the hatch still open). I don't use the doom light for fear of a dead battery. However, I do need a functioning door ajar indicator on the dash to make sure I've securely latched the rear hatch. Don't want to the dog falling out on the freeway! I should be able to isolate if its just the switch, or the body wiring harness. Thanks for making these videos. They really inspire DIY

Good luck. Prying that lock apart is a bit of a pain, but no worries if you tweak it. You can always bend it back into shape on a vice.

If your rear window switch isn't working, check the integrity of the wiring going from the body to the hatch. It's very common for wires at this juncture to fatigue and break from the opening and closing on the rear hatch. I replaced the light recently with an LED, much better but I found it is much easier to unscrew the housing because my new light slipped the contact points and ended up in the top frame of the hatch. A magnet will not retrieve it.

@TimmyTheToolman another terrific vid Tim! TY! 2things: i would 2nd the rear hatch handle working intermittently vid fix as i don’t think there’s an oem replacement part for that mechanism. I know personally i’m tired of pulling apart that rear hatch to either lube, jiggle, blow air etc at that mechanism only to have it fair again in 2wks! Even if was just a “work around” with a cable coming through the panel or something to avoid tearing that thing apart!? also at times on my dash i get the “door ajar” light on and sometimes my rear dome light would come on or flicker going over bumps etc so i’m thinking it’s this same switch you’re working on causing both issues? lastly maybe it’s 3things lol .. still think you guys need to show the community some sort of deep dive on a rust belt 4Runner!! Cheers!!

If we get someone with a rear hatch that has a locking mechanism problem with the handle not always working, We'll help them and make the video. I have no desire to work on a rust belt 4runner. I already swear enough as it is working on California rigs.

Is there a fuse for back dome light? Want to check if thats the issue before doing all that

We couldn't find a dedicated fuse just for the defrost.

@@TimmyTheToolman ok. Mine just works on ON all time but not when latch opens. But i burned it out when trying to replace bulb with Led i think i contacted metal to metal with flathead and saw smoke. Tried another dome and no luck
