The fact that Hitchcock was able to make a full length movie set in just one single location and still have it THIS visually pleasing is amazing (same with ROPE that was originally a stage play). They could have easily just have had the window facing a single brick wall on the other side but he decided to give the courtyard a personality of itself.

He was and still is the master of suspense.

Hitchcock is one of the greats, but one window facing a single brick wall would literally be the worst idea ever hahaha. I mean come on, obviously, you gotta make it a little more interesting and pleasant

I remember that they used to have this as an interactive feature at the Hitchcock attraction in Universal Studios Florida. They recreated the building with all the people going about their routines in the little windows, and there were binoculars wired to the banister so that you could get a closer look, and possibly witness a murder.

WOW. !!! Pure Masterpiece, Hitchcock was a genius director....over 50 years old and that scream -DON'T ! with the glass breaking still sends chills up and down my spine. Gorgeous Grace Kelly , the Great Jimmy Stewart, always fun Thelma Ritter, and pre Perry Mason ...Raymond Burr makes for a brilliant movie that never gets old.

I watched this legendary movie once on June 1, 2016 and I think it's time for me to watch it for the second time.📽🎬 It's a masterpiece of Alfred Hitchcock and a great performance by James Stewart 🎥 (08-11-2021)

This scene shows one of the best examples of Hitchcock's Pure Cinema. There is just one clear line of dialogue, but you can still tell what is going on in every shot, what our main charater is thinking and how he, over the course of this one night starts to become more interested in Thornhill's case. You can almost see the wheels turning inside Jimmy Stewart's head as his suspicions start to take root.

It is clear that the neighbor (Thorwald) choose this time (a rainy night) to murder his wife and cut her body up so that when he carries his silver sample case, that he uses on his job for selling costume jewelry, that if blood leaked out of the case while he was carrying it, the rain would wash it away with no one the wiser. Notice how he leaves his apartment at 1:55am clearly lugging the sample case and when he arrives back at 2:35am he is swinging it as if it was empty. The only unresolved question is who is that person wearing all black clothing and leaving with Thorwald at dawn, and how did that woman in black arrive at the apartment in the first place? Is it really his wife? His mistress? If so, did that woman help Thorwald with the body disposal?
