You'd be surprised how many cars on the road are rebuilt. All 4 of my cars are rebuilt and you'd never be able to tell because I get my parts either from the dealer or if I get lucky, another identical car at a junkyard. Saved tens of thousands.

Exactly. If it's a certain vehicle you were looking for (or know well) and were going to modify it to begin with and you find with minor damage (not hideous frame damage..like he said..if it didn't go sideways into a tree) and are going to keep for a few years....perfect. I have a beautiful black twin-turbo'd supra I didn't pay *anywhere near* what people were paying when it was new. This isn't for someone that thinks they are going to fix in their backyard and sell on Ebay and get rich quick. No. Unless you live in Fla. Their rules and regulations are....kind of different.
@steveidxp
@steveidxp 8 жыл бұрын
Ric...that's weird. After I bought mine, pretty much every single one we got after that (since '94)was thrashed beyond belief (thanks to the "Fast/Furious movie..the first..it was orange). I belong to a Supra club (Supras.Com) and *never* heard of them eating cams? I wonder what they were doing to them!! Yeah it all depends on the wreck, what you plan on doing to it/with it, the damage, and whether or not you're trying to re-sell and make money off of it or is this a vehicle you really want and are going to hold onto. My friends and family own a salvage and auto body business so that's a bit different than "joe average" trying to rebuild one in his backyard. Just throwin' it out there.
@dominicracca6955

A totaled car for all intents and purposes is simply a matter of the vehicle's repair exceeds the reasonable value of the car. That being said it does not mean the damage is critical to the safety or handling of the vehicle. I have rebuilt several "totaled" cars in my time and they all were as safe and as good looking as they were before the accident. Now when my 99 Camaro got T-boned it damaged the door, fender some minor damage to the inner sheet metal, and the spindle. I had the body shop I used to work for estimate it and my $4000 car had $5000 in damage mostly in the labor costs. I spent less than $300 in parts, $300 in paint and a good long day getting everything cut in and the metal back to where it belongs. I paid another $500 to have the car painted and blended (just as the body shop would have done if it were repaired there) and for $1100 I had my car fixed. Most of the other $3000 was in the labor for the shop. I did the labor and saved my car from being scrapped.

Good for you man. Fun car. Yeah a lot of people either don't like it at car clubs when they find out what you paid for it vs. what they paid or they freak out and say "it'll never be the same". My answer to that is "i'll let you drive a few cars and you tell me what was totaled"; or "it doesn't shake at 136mph". LOL. Haters gonna hate. The price in paint and additives (reducers and such) and primer have gone *way up* in recent years. Yikes. If it's something you like and going to hang onto for a long, long time it only makes sense.

I once bought a 2004 Mustang GT with a salvage title. I got it from this man that repair cars for living. The reason why I bought that car was because at the time I was a college student and I only had so much money to play with. I bought the car for $7500, half was paid cash, the rest I did on payments with no interest at all. In short I paid around $8k for a car that at the time dealers were selling for anywhere between 15-17k. add registration fees and you are looking at a 17k-19k out the door but realistically you would end up paying around $3500 more on interest which bumps the total cost close to 20k. It doesn't matter if a car is salvage what matters is making a smart purchasing decision if your funds are limmited.

when you get a little older, you'll realize that paying $8,000 for something worth $8,000 isn't any smarter than paying $17,000 for something that is worth $17,000.
@SpyderRios
@SpyderRios 8 жыл бұрын
It is when all you can afford is $8000 but I do know what you are talking about in terms of buying because after my 2004 Mustang GT I went and bought a clean title 2011 Mustang GT with 33k miles for $24000. That was 3 years ago. My next car will most likely be a used 2016 GT350, a car I would probably keep for life although I am perfectly happy keeping my 2011 5.0. So buying what you can afford (8k) is indeed smarter than buying something you can't (17k) but that's not saying that what you are saying is wrong because if you can afford more car, than it makes little to no difference.

you couldn't have made this video at a better time rob. I'm looking at a bunch of s2000s and the cleanest & lowest mileage one happens to be a rebuild title. normally I wouldn't even consider purchasing one but the owner can prove it's a rebuild title due to hail damage (smashed front & rear glass, fenders, hood and broken headlights). I'll more than likely purchase that s2k soon!

Hail damage is one of my favorite totals (seriously) as it's all usually/mostly cosmetic...roof, hood , rear trunk/deck lid, glass, etc. It's not like any of that is going to do the engine any harm. Unless it was *really* bad LOL. Just make sure you have time to look at all of this at all angles of the sun as if you buy it, you can almost guarantee that there's going to be something you notice (some bumps, etc.) after you get it and it's out of warranty. I agree with: superspeedersRob Is this a vehicle you are going to keep for many years or something you'll be looking to trade in in a few Months? That makes a BIG difference. You won't get shit for a trade in once they see that title.

The problem that makes people shy away from the vehicles that have been crashed or had bodywork damage is simple. Because once the game with the insurance company starts, they tend to try and get it done as cheaply as possible. When that happens, the shop that gets the rebuild work tends to cut corners to keep the price down on the vehicle. At the end of the day, these corner cuts means it just has to look the same, what may be happening underneath those panels that are put on you may have pinched and damaged wiring. What you get then may be a car that runs and works fine for a couple of years after the rebuild, but then the electrical gremlins start to show their ugly head. And if you intend to keep the car, you could spend a lot of money in just diagnosis fees to try and track down the problem. I can't say if the repair shops skimp on supercars / exotics, but if you are buying one outside of these cases, this is part of what you are getting into.
@superspeeders
@superspeeders 8 жыл бұрын
Depends on the extent of the repair, on exotics, what would be a minor repair on any other car could total a car out because of the replacement parts cost from the manufacturer. Like a $19,000 Lambo bumper or a $60,000 Viper hood.

I've dealt with quite a few salvage title cars and in my humble opinion, they're not worth the headache unless you plan on driving them till the wheels fall off. There's this stigma attached to them that makes reselling a huge pita because buyers always assume the worst even if you have it well documented. For rare cars like your nsx or the ferrari 458, I can sorta see the point you're trying to make with those.
@superspeeders
@superspeeders 8 жыл бұрын
As long as you buy right you wont get hurt. A rebuilt car will never get the same money as a clean car, however if you document the damage and repairs you'll stand a chance to get maximum value out of the car.

Sorry but I disagree with this video. In a lot of states totaled cars are difficult to get registered let alone insure.This is only worthwhile for a very select buyer who is looking for a bargain off a very expensive car or an incredibly rare car. For you average buyer however, save yourself the hassle, piece of mind and most importantly safety and buy a lightly used or new car that you can afford. If you're looking for salvage titles because it's a good "value" be wary of operating and repair costs that may occur later. That salvaged GTR may be a good deal but wait until you have to replace the brakes...

Girlfriend had a Nissan minivan. Her mother bought it "new" in 1994. She still had it many years later. I had observed a paint mismatch already as it aged. Sometime around 2008, the paint on driver door and rocker started cracking. Not long after, it became obvious that the door and rocker were filled with bondo. Not just a skim coat, but very very thick. As the bondo started peeling off, it was obvious the van had been hit HARD on the driver door, and instead of replacing the door and rocker, someone had just roughed it up and slapped bondo on it and resprayed it. Lucky I guess that it stuck for 15 years, but it was a terrible job. When it came time to sell the van a couple of years ago, they had all of the original paperwork. Turns out the van had been owned by a dealer in ... Florida ... and then was sold as a demo here in Texas with 400 miles on it. My friend's mother is still convinced she bought it new, that those miles were just test drives... Dealers do that kind of thing all the time. The only way to know for sure is to watch the car come off the truck. Even then, you don't know. Friend did a factory order recently, and his car was "delayed" at the port. After he finally took delivery, all sorts of bodywork problems and rattles started to appear immediately. Most likely the car was dropped or hit.. Nobody will say and the dealer is fighting him on it...

I bought my 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS for $900. Guy was asking $1,200. I didn't know this at the time but the car went through 10 owners making me the 11th owner. only had 125,000 miles, the poor car was so ABUSED for the low mileage I am surprised it still drives. After repainting it, fixing all of its issues, replacing the transmission, shift cables, cat, piping, sensors, etc. The car now drives like new with 134k miles. I put about $3k into it, and even though it has the crappy 420a Chrysler engine, I've gotten offers up to $6,000 for it. Salvaged title, no frame damage whatsoever. $6,000 for a car that KBB's at $1,000... I still own it and I never plan to sell it. Most reliable, good looking POS I've ever owned haha. I took a blind gamble and I guess I lucked out. But like you said, salvage cars are a gamble and I never thought of it that way until now

Good video. I bought my 2015 SRT Challenger fully loaded for $24,900 which was wrecked in a side swipe collision. The entire right side was repaired however there was no frame damage or anything other than sheetmetal and the front wheel assembly was replaced. The car is perfectly true and have never had a problem with it. Other than the title saying "Rebuilt", one would never know...and I paid half of what a new one is with 4200 miles.

Hi Rob, just bought a 2013 Lamborghini for about $10k lower than the market price from a Lexus dealer in Texas. The car looks spotless and drives great. You mentioned that it takes a while for records to show up on Carfax. So while I was watching this video I decided to check the Carfax the dealer presented me again. I noticed that the report has been updated since the last time I saw it and there were 3 emission failures in 2 days (around the time I was paying for the car, LOL!) and one of the emission failures has a mileage read that is 10x off (while the rest looks normal and adds up). Then following the 3 failures is 1 passed emission inspection with normal mileage. Other than the very thin possibility of this just being a mixup (since Autocheck also showed the same thing...) what could have possibly happened there? What should I do next?

It's all thanks to your video and my luck. Otherwise I would have found out months / years later. It's a one owner low mileage car so there is really not much to compare. Guess I will go to a local dealership to have the car inspected inside out. Bad thing is almost all dealers these days make you sign arbitration agreements so even if they lied to you there is not much you can do. Also I am on the west coast and had the car trucked from Texas. It'll be pretty hard for me to fight the dealer...

I'm a used car dealer in MA. Salvage cars are usually a lot cheaper. Especially at auctions and insurance auctions. If you plan on keeping the car forever, salvage is a good idea but if your only going to keep it for a year or two it's going to be VERY difficult to sell it again. Most people are scared of them.

Excellent video. Buying insurance totaled exotics can be incredibly smart if you have the location connections and facilities to repair it properly. It amazes me, how many stolen cars are eventually found and sold by insurance companies with salvage titles when the damage is minimal. A friend bought his stolen on Christmas Eve BMW convertible, back. After the insurance had generously settled months earlier. The car was recovered 2 months after being stolen in a remote location, wheels gone, catalytic converter gone, but basically only cosmetic damage. He bought it back for a third of the insurance settlement!

What likely happened is the insurance paid the owner the full amount of purchasing a 458 in the same condition and left him the old car which they considered useless because it had apparent frame damage. This happened to me in a range rover (lady backed into me in delivery truck and crushed hood) and the insurance company gave me the full amount for a new one, salvaged the title on the old range rover and let me have it. I simply spent the 3k on the hood and kept the cash! The 458 owner didn't want to do so and decided to sell it. More money in his pocket and a new car with no salvage title.

The only thing I would be worried about is what ACTUALLY got damaged as well. When the frame gets damaged, you never know if the engine/tranny got shifted ever so slightly that will cause major repairs in the future, even if they arent right off the bat. But in your case with the Ferrari, if I could actually see the damage that was done before I bought it, that would be a game changer in my overall decision on whether or not I purchased the car. A lot of the times, you don't REALLY know what has happened to the car, it has been repaired prior to you purchasing it which leaves you in the dark.

My Infiniti M35 is a salvage and it's in great condition. One of my dad's best friends owns a used car lot and a mechanic shop so he buys a lot of cars that have been totaled out, fixes them and resells them. I got a great deal on my M35 and my dad got an absolutely ridiculous deal on a 2015 Texas Edition Z71 which was totalled out by the insurance company with only 3,000 miles on it because of a front end collision. Neither of us have had any problems whatsoever with either of our salvaged vehicles. Don't be scared away by salvage titles. If you know what to look for, you know how to spot problems with cars and/or you have a good relationship with a dealer/mechanic, there are some seriously good deals to be found in the world of insurance auctions and salvage titles.

btw did a quick google search for the parts on that ferrari, wheel; $2000 US, bumber; $7235.00 US passenger side airbag; $15000.00 US AND its back ordered with an estimated 8 month wait. strut (probably needs it) $1500, control arm; $900 need i go on? if you only "saved" 70k on that car then after repairs and calculating lost value due to salvaged title you would end up paying MORE than buying a good 458.

Another thing worth noting is a lot of prior salvage title cars can be found with lower mileage than their clean titled siblings. Reason is, most cars that are in a "totaled" accident they sit while the owner works out the deal with insurance and they obviously aren't getting miles put on them while they're at the shop being repaired. I have owned several prior salvage titled vehicles and they were some of my favorites and I've never had an issue. The main thing is I would only suggest buying one of these if you plan to keep it or get it cheap enough you know you can get most of your money back when you sell. A lot of people are still scared of buying something like this so selling is harder. I have never once had any higher insurance on a prior salvage car. If anything the insurance should be cheaper because they value of the car is lower so the overall value of the insurance plan is lower. That all depends on your state. Some insurance companies won't offer full coverage on a vehicle like this. My current truck is a prior salvage title. It was the exact truck I wanted, had less miles than most I could find, and was about $5k less than other trucks just like it. I absolutely love it and plan to put 200k+ miles on it! The counter side this is there are a lot of clean title cars out there that have been in wrecks that people don't know about. I have a fully restored and built Honda CRX that is clean title but when I was building it, it was obvious it's been in some sort of front end collision. Minor, but enough to make panel aligning take some time.

The problem here is that salvage titles can mean anything from a cheap insurance company that totaled the car to a drowned Hurricane Katrina Malibu. Maybe there should be a separate tier for damage that doesn't lump everything into one group. Still, In a vehicle that could hit 200MPH I'm not going to trust anything that's been damaged so badly that it earned a scrap title at some point in its life. No matter what the reason. You can't fight that perception and the reality is you just don't know especially with unibody cars with hidden micro/stress fractures that don't show up in the average repair process. It's a lot like the old admonition to never buy a car that's been in a flood because you'll never be able to address all the issues like rust inside A-pillars and such.

i gotta say, after my lease is up, I'm buying a salvaged car to daily. I've had nothing but AMAZING (luck?) with salvage cars. first one was 2001 Acura TL, totaled out MULTIPLE times. Paid $4000 for it, has 70k miles, it was already rebuilt. That got me around for almost 2 years, I sold it with 90k+ miles for $3800...barely took a hit on it. After that I got my first manual car, a 2003 Acura RSX Type S. Purchased with 80k miles on it, for $6200. I had it for a little over a year maybe a year and a half, sold it with just under 100k miles for $6500...yeah I technically made money on it lol. Lastly, I took that $6500, bought a 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5i base model with a 5 speed manual for $6500, it had...i kid you not, 5001 miles on it. I put about $2000 in parts, labor and paint (it was red) and I drove it from there on the same brakes, same times, did maybe 3 oil changes or so and traded the car into a Toyota dealer for my first clean title financed car. The dealer gave me $6500 for it, it had 38k miles on it, lol, again barely lost any money. EVERY car after that has been dealer financed, I've lost in the course of 7 years...probably close to $50k in depreciation and mods.

That's how I got my Subaru BRZ and at the time it barely came out 2013, I repair it and everything came out around 13k, I think it could of been cheaper but parts have not been made from aftermarket companies like now is making it cheaper. My car is still going strong, just be smart when buying one.
