Some people criticize vehicles for being dated.. I actually love the vehicles that are "dated". I wish they would bring back the 10 - 15 years old models .. I like those much better than the current/new models. And the older vehicles are actually more reliable and are built better. And the dashboards of the older models are better, and more clear and easier to use.

I love it when people talk about how "dated" a cars tech is. I think my "dated" GX will get to the same exact places your tech filled car will go.... and with a lot less spent on maintenance

100% agree. More tech, more moving parts, more maintenance. Most of that tech you will never use anyway but cost you money. I learnt the hard way with an LS430 Ultra Lux!!

My biggest complaint with swinging doors like that is when they swing left to right...in the US we drive on the right which means loading from the street we do on the right so for example to load luggage in passenger pick-up at the airport you have to walk around the door which is annoying.

2020 refresh needs: 1) better fuel economy (at least 20mpg combined), 2) apple car play and android auto, 3) at least 4 USB ports (at least one USB C port), 4) a wireless charging port, 4) more modern, upscale styling (interior and exterior), 5) at least 9 inches of ground clearance, 6) 360 degree cameras, 7) panoramic moon roof.

I think the GX is fantastic. There is so much to be said about reliability! Actually, I consider reliability to be a component of luxury. Styling is a preference and yes, the lexus "beak" seems to grow with each new lexus model. However, I still like the looks of the GX. Also, the versatility. It is difficult (if not impossible) to find a new SUV that has the flip up back window, which covers 75% of what we load in and out of the back...and with dogs, it is almost a necessity camping. Speaking of which, this vehicle also does not have the ultra-soft touch materials everywhere. Our two medium sized dogs pretty much ruined our Outback "the dog car" within a week from claw dimples everywhere (and yes before everyone jumps on that...we keep their claws trimmed). I'll pass on the super charged turbo charger that has 3.5 electric motors at each wheel because as soon as the warranty goes...it will be a minimum $5k fix every year....besides just the hassle of having to deal with it. Traded in a very nice Touareg with all the "gizmos" because although that truck was great (while it was not at the dealer getting fixed), I needed to have the peace of mind of getting my family to wherever the destination is, in very nice comfort, without the stress of getting stranded.

I’ve been seriously considering buying one of these. I am a single guy that lives in the city but I could really use the space and I don’t want a truck. I heard the fuel economy is brutal but I don’t really drive that far for work and daily driving. I do road trips often and would like something comfortable that sits up high. My coworker told me I was crazy for wanting one but I love these cars and heard these cars are bullet proof. Thoughts?

Had to use my 2019 GX 460 on the beach earlier this year when we went camping because my son wanted to use my 2004 GX470 (my weekend and loaner vehicle) and I was absolutely amazed, it handle the beach like I was on the street. The big trucks there thought I was crazy. The 2004 GX470 (has 31's on it) and does feel lighter and quicker though, it is a very capable 4wd vehicle and not worried about about scratching it up or getting it dirty. I do recommend turning off the the driving stablizer feature when off-road.

Nice review! I think If it ain’t broke, why fix it...for the most part. A few USBs in the back, a little better MPG and I’m good. Don’t need the fancy anything else except lane departure and collision avoidance.

I own gx470 the rear gate swing open is the best feature. I have never been in a situation where the car behind is limiting access to open. You will rarely need the full 90 degree. But if you carry kayaks on top, you can get full access of your gear in the trunk without hitting the kayaks with a lifting-up style gate.

I have a 2017 GMC Sierra truck and have 6 usb in my truck, LED interior lights and Apple play and was looking at the 2019 GX 460 but the no apply play and barely any usb plug ins makes me sad and my truck cost the same as this model. Might wait til 2022 maybe then they will add this stuff since the 2020 isn’t going too.

Own this one for 3 years now, and the only factor I won’t buy new one is their climate control buttons. To make temp down or up, you have to click few times on the panel and touch screen. It’s very annoying while driving. Plus a bit dangerous cause you have to look at the screen when adjusting temps. Lexus should make simple analog roll buttons instead.

Nah The problem is with these buttons, when the car is moving you have to keep your eyes on the road and not on the dashboard when adjusting fan speed. Lexus engineers should keep more attention on the safety rather than design look.

@@pcfreezer6448 How is that any different than a knob? If you can't look away from the road for 1 second twice you probably shouldn't be driving. Also you can use the voice command to adjust the climate control. But that involves touching a button and talking which might be too dangerous for you.

As said in the manual they tune the car for premium fuel you can use regular fuel but the engine will not function as optimum so for most of the time use premium if not found use regular

The rear swinging door is fine. Jeep Wrangler does the same thing. At least you can open the glass without opening the rear door. You have to open the rear door on the Wrangler to open glass.

I'm 5'10 and I find the seating to be quite low for such a tall vehicle. I'd rather it has less head room but taller seats. The seats' thigh support is quite poor for the class.

@@ryan-xj4hr They're not two completely different vehicles. They share a common platform but they're not exactly the same either. The Prado, 4Runner, and GX share common frame parts and have diverging derivations of other parts. I'd call them close cousins.

Last time this truck was updated , I was a senior in HS. I’ve been eyeing a 4Runner for a bit, which is this guys brother but I can’t get myself to pay 45k for a car that was around when I was 17. Please Toyota do an update, I get there is demand for these outdated reliable trucks. But at this point the premium for reliability is starting to outweigh the major need for updated tech.

It’s nice that the numbers in Lexus cars actually indicate the engine size. 460 is a 4.6L, 570 is a 5.7 liter, 350 is a 3.5 liter. Unlike other brands, where 450 is a 3.0 liter, and 300 is a 2.0 liter. Although the LS 500 has a 3.5 liter instead of a 5.0 liter, but oh well.

Lexus engineers will say the GX 460 is rock solid because it's been around a long time, and this is true. For me, reliability and quality is way more important than having the latest technology. The GX has all the technology I need. And be careful what you wish for... When the GX gets its refresh, it likely will be built on a unibody frame. So if you want a truck, now is the time to get a GX. Otherwise, the Toyota 4Runner may soon be the only SUV this size with a body-on-frame design. By the way, the GX is full time 4-wheel drive, not all wheel drive. There is a difference.

We picked up a used, single owner 2010 460 with 90kmi last July from Lexus in Newport Beach for 23,800. It replaced our 04 470. No complaints with it. Everything feels tight interior wise, zero oil/grease in the engine compartment and undercarriage, tires wear evenly and it is a comfortable, quiet ride. We have 2 car seats in the back and have enough room for Costco runs,etc. 3rd row is for children or small adults. Engine gets up pretty good, not extremely quick, but if you get on it it moves well. I’ve never lacked for power basically. Rear door is fine, but we were used to the same door in our 470. No timing belt on this engine as opposed to the 4.7, which is a plus. All reviews state no real problems with the 4.6, just have the water pump replaced at around 100k. The only complaint we have is the corny silver plastic bezel that encapsulates the instrument cluster and that is purely superficial. Doors are solid when you close them, shifts smooth and is quiet when driving. We hope to get 200k more out of her! Average fuel mileage is almost always 16mpg. Road trip mileage is 19-21mpg.

Even though it's still the best built King of the large SUVs, as it's bred from the Land Cruiser family. But, yes...its past due for a major interior refresh, large digital displays, and a lifted center console, with all "safety sense" standard..,as I am sure they are working hard in Tokyo's Toyota city R/D mecca.

One of your first comments is, “This is a large SUV”. I disagree. It isn’t any “larger” than many vehicles. If it is large, then what is the Lexus LX, or my Suburban? 🤔 By the way, I have spent some time traveling with friends in their GX, so I know, it is not large, but it is a great vehicle, and the way the rear door opens is not an issue at all. I would love to have one if I could afford it! Also, if a lack of usb outlets in back is a big deal, some Toyota dealers install them in 4Runners as an option so I imagine it could be done to a GX as well.

If you want good winter SUV don't buy Porches cayenne. Mine got stuck in my driveway every time there was heavy snow. ML350 is 5x better than cayenne.

You're basically saying that the Land Cruiser's smaller brother is junk because it has the same body style for 9 years and doesn't have USB outlets in the back? Haha. @Bumps in the night The reason Toyota is low tech and seldomly changes their car designs is because they work, and their sales worldwide proves it. They boast the most sales worldwide. Other car manufacturers that are much less reliable, have to redesign their cars much more frequently because "suckers", such as yourself, get a hard-on when the newest, most up-to-date, and redesigned model comes out. Because of your impulsiveness to have more USB outlets, you purchase yet another unreliable, decked-out vehicle that will drastically depreciate and be redesigned in 2 years. But don't you worry, the next design will have even more USB outlets for your delight!

I have a 2012 Range Rover bought in late 2011 and it has not given me any problems. Just basic maintainance and brake pads. LR got the bad rep when bmw owned them. The current owners TATA has invested much RnD and made them significantly reliable and lighter. But i still want a toyota. A 4runner trdpro.

all the haters in the comments that have no clue how capable these things are! In 30,000 miles we have averaged 19.8 mpg. I have driven places very few vehicles could have taken me in completely stock form and in amazing comfort. The ONLY drawback is the technology aspect, but the aftermarket is finally bringing quality Android units for this model. The only thing that could use an update is the transmission to a beefy 8 speed and the infotainment. Oh, and bring that amazing V8 diesel stateside!

@@haduong5828 easy. Now after 3" lift and 33s it's down to about 16 but that's also with sitting in school lines for 50 minutes 5 days a week.

Great reviews, but would the automotive journalism world please quit screaming for a "refresh" so much. Thankfully Toyota tends to ignore you, but now the US companies sell mostly junk. We'll be driving our I phones shortly, I'm afraid. This is a 300k vehicle because it's been refined over time. Keep up the good work, and thank you.

Jeffrey Hornbaker this truck is about lasting luxury, not delicate finicky refinement as other companies do. Since Toyota keeps these vehicles simple, while they may not have modern luxuries others get, you get a safe reliable car you can drive for decades and not have to worry about leaving you stranded. The people that buy these cars are what I would call “ true wealthy”. They purchase nice cars but cars that will last, not the newest hottest thing. If changing the interior makes it less durable it ain’t worth it. I look at the ones on the used market and they look almost brand even after 4 years

Owned a brand new 2015 GX 460 and traded it for a 2017 RX 450H in 17. I miss the toughness and go anywhere of GX but I do not miss the dismal 15 MPG and the truck like feel/drive. This 2019 hasn't changed at all from the 15 version. I hated the infotainment in the GX and I hate it more in RX. I swear if it wasn't for the reliability of Toyota and Lexus products I would run far away from them as they are so frustrating to use.

Damn, so the only thing the gx has going for it is reliability, and looks nice, but 300hp in todays age is way too low for an SUV that size, around 400hp should be their goal for the base model, USB or cigarette lighter ports should be at least 6, 2 per row, more technological features, like blind spot monitoring, adaptive headlights, maybe radar cruise control, automatic braking, sequential LED turn signals, lane departure warning, those are things I would expect in a "luxury" SUV, lexus waits too long to catch up with the rest of the competition, they have to start stepping up their game, or they will soon be extinct,

@@mziwendukuntsele671 2.7 and 2.8 l petrol and diesel in Japan. Similar spec in Europe. There is very little of them in the cities, I live it Tokyo, but they do come up in the mountains with people who try to be "outdoor trendy". Prado 2.8l diesel TX-L package costs equivalent 45k USD in Japan.

Test drove both cars. I picked the GX over the 4runner limited. Even though the GX was more expensive, you get the comfort and the smooth ride. Plus the v8 gets you up to speed in a short time, when the 4runner was struggling.

That back hatch/door is dumb! Imagine parallel parking and needing to open the back hatch/door but you can't b/c somebody parked behind you and you can't open it enough to load anything in the back. Not to mention that unless you like in Japan or England, it opens towards the traffic side and not the sidewalk side. The upper hatch is fine only if you are at least average height when loading groceries.
