Hello Dr. Chen. This is very insightful. I have had my MD and MSc already. And this fall, I will be pursuing my PhD in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. After watching this video, I was motivated to pursue MPH as well after my postdoctoral fellowship.

I saw your Med-Derm residency video and I was very impressed at the time (I am an IMG who never knew a such thing as a double board exists!). I am still aspiring to get matched in Med-Derm! Also, a year ago I saw this video and I was inspired, I immediately joined the MPH program in my city - a two year degree - and here I am sending you many thanks for the inspiration

Hi Dr. Chen! Thank you so much for this video, it has really helped a lot since I am currently applying to medical school and interested in possibly pursuing a MPH as well. You mentioned in your video that you got a grant through the NIH to complete your MPH, I'm curious how you found and applied for this grant?

The grant was a part of our medical school program (a T32). Sadly, it's a function of the institution, not publicly available. That said, many scholarships exist for these 1 year masters programs!

Thank you Dr Chen. Would you recommend doing MPH or master's of community health and preventive medicine for a future clinician? I don't get the difference between the programs.

I've not heard of the latter, but based on what the name implies, I think it's much more specific than an MPH. An MPH would allow you to do those things as well, so I think if you're certain you want to do preventative med in the future, that degree makes sense, but if you think there's a chance you'll want to do something else, MPH might be a better bet.

Hello, Dr. Chen! I have a master's in healthcare management and am planning on getting a 2nd master's in clinical nutrition before finishing with my doctorate of health science. If I change the order by getting my DHSc first and then end with my MS-ACN, would I be able to have my master's paid for? Thanks for your time.

Can't guarantee anything! It depends on the opportunities that exist and you'd have to do some research to see what's possible and what might be funded.

Im starting fellowship this year and I'm also joining a MPH generalist simultaneously starting at fall semester, i dont know what to expect and I'm afraid it will be only a waste of time but i hope i leave this video with some important information that will make me rethink about it or not

I finished my medical school 3 years ago and done a lot of clinical jobs as a general practitioner but now I decided to immigrate to America, maybe I need to study MPH to come there before I take USMLE

No, just the listed prerequisites should be sufficient! Whatever the program lists on their website for admission.

The MPH is a VERY versatile degree - so it depends on what your focus was during your MPH year, and what you're looking to do afterward.

Im a med student about to graduate and looking to do an Mph. Im torn between a concentration in biostatistics or in epidemiology and i can’t seem to find information that helps to make the decision that would be beneficial when i start practicing. Biostats and Epi often go hand in hand, so you probably won't even have to make the decision. My concentration was the two together.

Does enrolling in an Advanced certificate in Public health do good especially if I am completing my USMLE STEPS exams during the time i pursue the Program ? It is one year long and I can only afford the certificate program in public health but it is from a very reputed institution. Kindly reply back ;It would really mean alot to me . I don't think you need to get a public health certificate unless you plan to use those skills in the future. If it's something you're passionate about, then hopefully it'd be a good investment, but it's obviously a personal decision. good luck!

I’m an undergrad pre med student and I am thinking of pursuing an MPH before applying to medical schools, do you think this is a good idea to get an MPH now or is it best to wait till *after* medical school?

The benefit of getting an MPH after medical school is the higher likelihood that it will be paid for by someone else! Additionally, the skills you learn during the mph are probably better applied after med school (regarding research skills like biostatistics and epidemiology). However, if an MPH is in the cards no matter what, and you’re excited to do that first, go for it! Just consider the above!

Find a partner in research who can help guide you! There’s no reason that you can’t get involved, it’s all about finding the right collaborator. It might be easiest to start with other pharmacists who are doing what you are hoping to accomplish and asking them for advice or introductions to potential collaborators. good luck!

Do it if you're interested in public health! The statistics you learn will be forgotten if you don't use it all the time, so if it doesn't matter when you do it, I'd suggest working toward an MPH when you're more likely to use the statistics knowledge.

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD! It's a great school, couldn't recommend it enough. But there are tons of great MPH programs out there. I wouldn't worry too much about rankings, but rather where you can work with like-minded faculty and a program that will set you up for success!

hi i have done my MBBS from pakistan which is as MD in other countries , i am a canadian national and want to do MPH in canada cause im interested in this program ....what are the requirements to get admission in mph in canada for a medical graduate , i searched on the websites and it requires atleast one undergraduate statistic course ,i dont understand what that means ,can imgs get admission without GRE or statistic course ? i would be greatful if you help

So sorry - I don't know the requirements for an MPH in Canada. Statistics courses are usually just the intro level stats courses offered at universities. It sounds like it's just a prerequisite, so you could potentially take one at a community college for that requirement. Good luck!

Since you've done MBBS, the university might consider it had biostatistics as part of the program, at least that is the case with the University in Canada I found out about online.
