Great Christian. Let me know how it goes. I'm a big fan of C1, although not of their pricing...they make it difficult for photographers to switch over when they insist on higher pricing than the Adobe options.

Hi Emil: I agree with everything you have outlined in your video. The only other thing I would add is that C1 seems to render the images from a Sony camera better than Lightroom. I always use the Linear Profiles within C1 as a starting point and I didn't like how Adobe managed these profiles, even if you used the Linear Profiles within LR. There is a big difference in the starting image. Cheers, Keith

Thanks Keith. That's interesting to know! I'm not a Sony user (yet...my move to video may change this), but the initial uptake to C1 with Fujifilm users was enormous for pretty much the same reason. I currently shoot Nikon and also find that the starting image is closer to my taste than with LR.

Hello, Emil, your overview is what I needed. I don't use Lightroom but work with Adobe Bridge and Photoshop but Adobe Bridge has become unusably slow - over an hour to import 28 photos. So I urgently need the C.O. alternative. It is, of course, a difficult learning curve but I'm hoping your tutorials will help. I think the main problem is conceptual, Sessions is a new concept, for me that is. Thanks and stay well.

Apologies for the delayed response Gerry. Hoping to do more tutorials in the near future. I've been lecturing photography at a college which has taken all my time recently...handed in resignation (love working there but too many balls in the air) a few days ago so hoping to do more of this in future.

I switched to C1 in 2020, agree with all your points. And yes, unfortunately C1 is very expensive 😢

I have managed to time upgrades and payments to late November, meaning that it coincides with the various online deals that swirl around Black Friday and like. It has saved me a not insubstantial amount of money.

If you have one single catalogue it will become enormous and unwieldy as you say. I use catalogues and create a new catalogue for each year, thus limiting the size. There is no limit to the number of catalogues you can create.

It’s a technique that a number of LIghtroom users fall back on as well. To me multiple catalogues is no different to multiple sessions, but every photographer has their own preferences here. In theory catalogues will can run faster once all the previews are in place. C1 was a session based editing platform before it offered catalogues, possibly one of the reasons I prefer that (i.e my own historical experience with the platform).

@@emilvonmaltitz Agreed, I have been using C1 since 2017 having migrated from Lightroom, I guess the reason I use catalogues is that I understood that concept right off as apposed to sessions.

@@emilvonmaltitz yes and no, I’ve started to throw DXO Photolab into the mix as well (no importing, magnificent lens profiles, superb output). Guess I’ll never be happy 🤣🤷🏼‍♂️

i too love C1 - but it doesn't actually give you ALL the edits in layers - some are still only available on the background... like B&W and grain...

You are referring to changing the RAW output from colour to black and white treatment? It's more a base treatment which is why I suspect. The workaround is to use a different way to get to black and white...like the saturation slider - this can be applied in a layer. IMO Capture should never have added the Black and White section under adjust...it really should stay under Style/Color for this very reason, unless they were to treat like a proper edit...but it's a base characteristic the way it is currently implemented. I didn't know that about the grain, but you are absolutely right about that...maybe worth sending that in as a suggested feature for the next upgrade?
