Reasons Why Veterinarians are Useless without Vet Techs - Part 2

Had to make another one!
Real talk: veterinarians are pretty useless without our technicians. Very similar to human doctors and nurses, from what the comments section has told me! Doctors are really just there for legal purposes, to have a name on the prescription, to schmooze people, and for brain power… most days! Love all of my technicians at work, and all of those that support and follow me!

I used to be a vet tech. Things vets have said to me: "Does April come before or after May?" (Dr. G really needed to stop picking up night shifts, she was not okay.) "Where's my badge? I can't get the door open." (The badge was on his chest, however, that door was the door to the storeroom, which only our storeroom manager or night storeroom manager could open, with a physical key. This was clearly stated on a poster that hung on eye level on the door...a foot in front of his face.) "Do you think we could fit a llama in Exam Room 12?" (This was sadly not a rhetorical question; a farmer had brought his llama, Judith, in to our clinic and that vet had told the receptionist to put them in Room 12, which was approximately 10 foot by 10 foot. The lead vet tech turned shades of red I've never seen before when she yelled at him for being an idiot.) "How does this thing work again?" (In reference to our blood centrifuge. That she had used 4 times already that day.) "Wow, you smell!" (I was covered head to toe in diarrhea, on my way to the emergency shower. Thanks, Captain Obvious) "Does anyone smell something weird?" (The dog was covered in pepper spray. Our eyes were watering, we were coughing, and we were getting covered in the stuff. All 3 techs needed a change of clothes, it was so bad. Yes, we could certainly smell something weird; it was all we could smell for the rest of the day.) I do not miss that job. Vets are the smartest dumbasses you'll ever meet.

I work on the documentation end of healthcare. I have to email and call doctors constantly to either put in their documentation or fix something on the documentation (why is there no diagnosis!). I couldn't image being there physically, it feels like roping in a bunch of kids with rampant ADHD from my end alone.

And a medical lab technician I can say that this is true. Idiots can't tell the difference between a qualitative pregnancy test (to see if the woman was pregnant) versus a quantitative pregnancy test (to see how far along she was) and kept ordering the wrong one or accusing us that we did the wrong test.

Things I, a veteran vet tech, will never let a vet do again: 1. Tape an IV in. [cries in piles of sticky tape] 2. Trim nails. Just.... no. 3. Write anything in their own handwriting, ever. They are only allowed to sign things. I am over deciphering chicken scratch. 4. Go anywhere *near* an IV pump..... or lab equipment.... [war flashbacks] 5. Clip fur. No. Put the clippers *down* and go do doctor shit while I deal with this. You are not going to scare our clients with your clip hack job. 😂😂

I do vet tech education now because I'm too old and busted to do medicine anymore. I tell all my students that if they want their jobs done effectively, efficiently, with minimal mess, to never let the DVMs do a single thing. I still remember the "helpful" vet who was trying to set up some fluids for me. I appreciated it. I really did. But 500mls of D5W on the floor later...

Do you have any advice for someone just starting out in the field? I will take every shred of information I can get! This works into my theory that human and veterinary medicine attracts the gifted ADHD kids, cause there's so much to learn, and continue to learn, you can't get bored- but also why a lot of them have yeeted the boring information after the exams or never took it in in the first place. Also hyper fixation on subjects that are totally obscure and uninteresting to many :P

If someone wants to become a Vet Tech and they only have their general education associates degree- what steps should they take to become a Vet tech?
@kamikoenig-snell7044
@kamikoenig-snell7044 3 ай бұрын
From a Vet Tech… see if the state you live in has any specific Vet Tech programs. My state MN only has 2 left. That type of program, usually 2 years as well will include an internship and state board exams. If you pass you are then a certified/licensed vet tech. For me that means more money and marketability. Some vets will have vet assistants that may train to be a tech but not do any other formal education. I would recommend looking into school, and volunteering to help with any animal organization you can. Birds, reptiles, rabbits, anything to get more experience than just cats or dogs. My practice treats everything and there are only 2 of us who have any experience with all. We make 10 dollars more than our peers. You will be able to find better job opportunities with a combination of experience and education. Good luck!!
