The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell,
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.
When mortal time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall;
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call;
God’s love, so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race-
The saints’ and angels’ song.

Could we with ink the ocean fill,

The love of God reaches to the lowest hell. Reminds me of King David’s words “If I ascend the wings of the dawn, you are there. If I make my bed in hell, even so, you are there.” No one can escape the incomprehensible, all-encompassing, all consuming love of God. 😊

Hi, good day!! We sang this song and used your version last Sunday during our church service. I would like to ask, if what is the original and correct word in the line " It goes beyond the highest star", is it "star" or "stalk"? I was corrected and told it should be "stalk" not "star". I am assigned to operate eworship so I was the one who prepared the lyrics. And the music team also used "star". I hope you could help me. Thank you very much.c

Star is correct. It says stalk in the 3rd verse.

@@debbee4582 Not quite, the last verse- Could we with ink the ocean fill, And were the skies of parchment made; Were every stalk on earth a quill, And every man a scribe by trade; To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry; Nor could the scroll contain the whole, Though stretched from sky to sky. Was written on a wall of a hospital/prison, the building was used by both at different times. Frederick had problems writing the last verse and the hymn languished on his desk in the form of two verses, hymns by tradition need three verses (to reflect the trinity). Frederick received those words above by chance. they fitted perfectly with what he wanted. the rest is history.
