What was intended to be a small knife turned into a bit of a large dagger!
Probably only going to be used as a letter knife!
Made from rebar which doesn't have much carbon in so won't heat treat.
My Amazon pages with some of the tools and equipment I use in my videos.

The threaded type of rebar is the higher carbon steel type..rebar comes in several flavors such as grade 40 the lowest carbon steel..grade 60..80..100..are suitable for tools and edge retention..the common type mostly used for residential construction is grade 40..the other issues are a very wide inconsistency of quality even in the same stick of rebar..a simple spark test on a grinder is the best method to see if it has enough carbon to use as a tool..

Just a little nostalga, that rebar used to be called GK60, it's pre-tempered and very tough stuff. I used to work in the reinforcing mill in Cardiff Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds, longer ago than I care to remember. :-) Over the years I have bent tons of it into shapes destined for buildings snd bridges all over the UK. It was memorable because when you tried to bend it, it would twist into all sorts of shapes. Loved watching you smash it into submission by the way! Regards Joe.

Love your videos. Here in the USA rebar is hit and miss, tough like this, then a few feet later, almost mild steel
@bsb0011
@bsb0011 7 жыл бұрын
From someone who has worked in a steel mill in the US, I can tell you that it is not hit and miss. Each batch of rebar is made to order, and there are many different grades. Each batch has a coupon cut off and the metallurgy is checked. The customer can specify what grade they want. This ranges from very low grade to very high grade metal. The stuff that is meant to be threaded for bridges or the nuclear industry's are very good stuff - it will weld and forge very well, while the stuff sold at home improvement stores is normally very low grade made for reinforcing small non-structural areas like driveways and porches. The stuff sold to the nuclear industry comes with a 3/8" thick packet of paper with all the metallurgy for that exact batch. It is checked at the mill, and again at the plant that cuts, bends, forms, or threads the bar before being shipped to the customer. Bridge grade comes with about 1/4 inch packet, normally only provided to the plant that cuts and bends the bar before being delivered to the customer. Home improvement rebar stuff is normally not worth a s#!t and will probably not forge very well either, very brittle and prone to chipping out if made into a chisel. By the way, same goes for rail road spikes. Normally, there are 2 grades. First is very nice to work with, strong, hard but not very brittle. Other is much softer, weaker and will not hold an edge no matter what you try. It all depends on what the railroad company wants to spend, and where the spikes will be used.

1:08 The "hand guard" I think Rebar is one of the best beginning material for new weapon smiths. It already comes with a good grip for the handle, and has a decent shape already for working the form. P.s. I thought it was hazardous to heat up galvanized metal. Considering what it did to "Paw Paw" Wilson. Bless his soul.

Nice one, I thought I was the only person who used nuts and washers for pommels and guards. I randomly did it a few months ago on a little knife I forged. I couldn't find any chunks of steel to drive a hole through to make a guard, so I grabbed a thick washer heated it up and hot forged it around the top of the handle, then got a nut just like the one you used and peened it to the base of the tang and hammered it around. Cool video.

You know you said it's easier to grind when annealed, it's true it;s much easier to remove metal, I used to anneal everything before grinding now I dont. I just keep water on it while grinding. I find it much more precise and less risky to grind it in a hardened state. When you remove metal while it's hard it grinds much cleaner in crisp lines with no rolling and curling. But when you grind annealed steel on a fast belt it takes way too much material off really fast and you find the edge rolls and curls quite a lot. I think it leaves a better edge if you grind it hard. Just my opinion though.

RC - Totally agree . Rebar is obviously not a first choice for a blade which needs edge retention , but a combat blade only needs to work for 5 seconds maximum . This dagger will punch holes in an adversary all day long . After 5 seconds = game over . Using method called Case Hardening with low carbon steel is a different story .

nice time killer, but as you already run a business, you might look into selling stuff like that, even if you have to get an export permit, (which I admit could be expensive). Take on an apprentice or two, and 'retire' from shoeing. This channel is a great start for advertising, and you could expand on it. However you go about it, here is hoping your hands/arms feel better, and you have many more years to enjoy your work.
