Part four: In this video, we continue learning about foundations. Once holes are dug and before concrete is poured, we want to have the proper footings prepared. That includes bigfoots, sonotubes and rebar (or reinforcing bar).

I like the idea of the bigfoot bases. One question I do have is about why there is no vertical rebar in the sonotubes. I thought that anything bearing heavy weight should have extra rebar in it. I am not a pro but would not even attempt a small build without vertical rebar over a footing.

Thank you for your very clear and informative video. It’s nice to see how your holes are dug perfectly on open ground. We have a scenario where we will be digging similar holes, but underneath the existing structure.

I feel sorry for Americans, that foundation could hold three story concrete house but sales men convinced them this is the proper way to build just a wood deck

If you are going to do rebar do it correctly. Have a company form rebar hoops for both inside the bigfoot and hoops for a cylindrical rebar cage inside the sonotube spacing the hoops 12" vertically with #4 rebar and then have vertical pieces bent so that the footing and column are tied together as one unit. If the pier is going to support more weight go to 6" spacing on the rebar hoops and vertical pieces all tied nicely with plastic feet on the bottom. There should be a minimum embedment thickness of concrete surrounding the rebar cage and the pier needs to be vibrated when it is being poured to get air bubble out, but more importantly to get the concrete to consolidate around all the rebar. That little square of rebar you showed will not do jack. If you are not going to give proper, accurate, safe advice DO NOT GIVE ADVICE AT ALL.

Yes, that's a good formula for the sonotube rebar and it would be good to follow this or as you mentioned you can purchase the premade hoops, they are great. Thanks for that input, However, it is not needed for this application and yes the rebar base will do a lot of good for the footings even though that is not needed in the case either. I suggest you all check your town for their specific requirements and codes to follow before you start your project. Design once and construct once. Less to worry about.

@@sherwoodinspectionservices772 Overkill is under rated. I would rather use #6 rebar when only #4 is called for as it has twice the nominal area, or increasing the grade from grade 60 to grade 80 rebar, or if 12" spacing is called for using 6" spacing instead. Personally I would rather go the extra mile with a full rebar cage supported on plastic feet, vibrate the concrete properly, and have 4 threaded anchors bolts placed extra deep into the concrete pier instead of just a single bolt to tie the building to footing/ground, that way I can be absolutely certain that there will never be any problems will my structure ever. A little extra money and time is worth the piece of mind in the end. FYI, rebar is never supposed to in contact with soil as moisture accelerates corrosion, the force of rusting rebar expands causing cracking in the concrete, rebar is normally required to be embedded in 2" of concrete to protect it.

Why no rebar in the sonotube? Usually concrete piers have cage reinforcing.

You can however for the weight it doesn't warrant it.

@@sherwoodinspectionservices772 Just being penny wise and pound foolish. For what little you would spend on (4) #4 vert. bars and #3 ties it gives you piece of mind to tie everything in together. Think about how much it could potentially cost you should one of them cracks.

Are you able to describe how you dug your holes? I was thinking about using an 8 in (diameter) auger to drill multiple holes and dig up the rest of the dirt with a shovel. Thoughts?

So no rebar going the length of the sonotube?

No needed, However you can purchase rings for the concrete in the tubes, although in many typical cases for a deck or porch it's not needed. Even fore this 2 story construction its not needed. Town said we did overkill as it was. However, I would rather over build than under!

I agree how did you dig the hole did you use an auger first then dig the rest out?

This will depend on the soil condition. We got lucky wit this one and the soil was soft so we dug everything by hand with a shovel. An auger is a good idea.

Can you describe the setup that keeps the rebar off the ground in the Bigfoot base? Are you running rebar in the sonotube as well?
@sherwoodinspectionservices772
@sherwoodinspectionservices772 2 жыл бұрын
There are standoffs that you may purchase that goes into the soil, keeping the rebar in the center of the Bigfoot. You may put rebar in the sonotubes; however, most of the time it is not necessary. It would depend on what it is supporting -- 2-story house or a deck.
