Bach was a very skilled string player as well as keyboardist. When playing in an ensemble he often preferred to play the viola da gamba, so that he could be in the thick of the harmony. The skill of Bach on the violin is of course very evident in these miraculous sonatas and partitas. To hear his music played this beautifully is sheer heaven. Bach's music will live on as long as our civilization, and actually beyond because some of his music (performed by Glenn Gould) is embedded in a gold disc sent out with the space explorer Voyager I. If some far-gone alien civilization finds and hears this music they will be very impressed, no doubt. Assuming their hearing is the same as ours, of course.
