@@Wisdom-Nuggets-Tid-Bits exactly and why Judith was nominated for an Oscar . Also the way Danvers threatened her was much more subtle by showing her all the clothes , taking her thru each part of the room letting her feel them without being overly direct. always sends chills down my spine

This is honestly one of my favorite scenes of the whole movie. It's so unsettling and uncomfortable. Everything about it down to the color of the room and their clothes adds to the feeling of coldness. I wish the whole movie was like this scene. It really could have been more hardcore, especially with Ben directing. He played it safe.

I prefer the original 1940's version of this scene: It was so much more subtle yet absolutely intense, showing the complete loss of sanity and detachment of reality to Mrs. Danvers.
@ArtemisScribe
@ArtemisScribe 3 жыл бұрын
It's rare that a modern adaptation feels less subtle than a 1940s version but this scene feels far more hammy than the Hitchcock version.

Rebecca came out of this glitzy metropolitan world. She'd been transplanted from London to Cornwall. She brought London with her to Manderley, and that’s the most Rebecca room in the whole house. She was sort of a cancer to Manderley itself, and her influences were spreading inside the house. She'd redesigned that room to be an art deco, modern room away from the historical design at the house. If she lived, she would have completely redecorated the whole place. But as it was, she only managed to get that wing of the house done.

I was always shocked by how unashamedly rude Mrs Danvers was for a housekeeper, acting as if she has no brakes, saying things any house keeper would lose their job and good name for good at that time, at least. The 1940s version was mild compared to KST's portrayal of a sulking and enigmatic housekeeper, her grip on that hair brush was less than approporiate, looked as if she wanted to bash her head with it rather than brush her hair. I suppose her presence in the story is inevitable in order to highlight the new Mrs De Winters' subtlelty and naïve, kind hearted, clueless nature. Mrs Danvers certainly had outdone even herself in this scene.
@heidibarker9550
@heidibarker9550 Жыл бұрын
I find it fascinating when Mrs. Danvers says "using her name". Names are of paramount importance in this story, I could write a whole essay about them. The man in the story has his full name revealed George Fortascue Maximillian De Winter. The more assertive, and independent women of the story also have the dignity of having their full names be given Rebecca de Winter (nee Hillyaworth) and Beatrice Lacy (nee de Winter). However our meek, young, naive, narrator isn't given a first name we only know her as the 2nd Mrs De Winter, meaning she is tied to Maxim and tied to Rebecca she is not independent of these two people. Very fascinating.

I love that blue shade of color, with the flower embroidery they used for Rebecca's bedroom. The coverlet on the bed was a golden color in the book, Mrs.Danvers said it was Rebecca's favorite. The 1979 version had Rebecca's bedroom in the style of the 17th century with the dark wood paneling described in the book. Mrs. Danvers said Rebecca's bedroom is the most beautiful room in the house. It was in the oldest section of Manderley, the West wing.

It is all based on a book though including Hitchcock and it isn't necessarily a remake, though that's the most popular adaptation and my favorite other than Maxim not having shot Rebecca himself bc of the lame Hays code. Rebecca is one of those books that has been adapted a lot of times and will continue to be. I enjoy comparing them tbh 😂.

It's hard to imagine that behind these beautiful costumes these are incredibly hard working actors, sweating, stressed, some anxious, others bipolar, trying to concoct these precise emotions with a deadline and a paycheck. That scene is a Master Class in acting. The actresses take their time, as Danvers shows wife #2 all the clothes, lingerie, etc. It's the first time she reveals the extent of her obsession. Every time I see another version of "Rebecca," it seems as though the director knows he'll never equal Hitchcock's version of that scene, so why bother to go there.

I have to agree with you. A too modern looking Mrs. Danvers, and the new Mrs. DeWinter who is lady of the house wearing a sweater & slacks at Manderley with that hair? Can't really tell which time period this movie is to be set in. Mrs. DeWinter would not have acted so seductive to Maxim before they married. Of all the Rebecca's, the 1997 version with Charles Dance and Emilia Fox is my favorite. It's long enough to develop the characters and storyline and the "new" Mrs. Van Hopper is a hoot!
