“I don’t expect anyone to give me six or seven hours of their time. I expect to have to fight for their time with pretty much every line… If you are either speaking or writing, you cannot presume on your audience’s attention. I need to motivate my reader to turn the page-every single page that I’m turning-and probably even every paragraph, and if I’m not doing that, I haven’t done a good job of writing this book.” Putting that up on my wall. ❤️

Okay, psychobable acronyms aside, this is a very good conversation. The book is terrific, I just bought it, and can hardly put it down. In fact, I need to get back to work, but wanted to take a minute to see if Rebecca was on KZfaq. Thanks for the conversation. I am recommending your book widely, Rebecca. Glen, thank you for hosting. Thanks be to God for such a mature conversation about the Gospel.

i have an interesting argument about the existence of god and evolution: say that we will see a self replicating robot ( lets say even with dna) on a far planet. do we need to conclude design or a natural process in this case? remember that according to evolution if its made from organic components and have a self replicating system we need to conclude a natural process because it has living traits. but we know that even a self replicating robot is evidence for design. therefore a penguin for instance need design too :as for the problems with evolution you may interested in this answersingenesis.org/evolution/

The Christian ethic never condoned slavery. There were those who purported themselves to be Christians who supported or owned slaves, but owning of slaves was never a Christian act. Christians are no different from all others, in that all of us are capable of, and guilty of, sinning.

In the stories God was perfectly willing to outright ban, in explicit terms, many human activities in the Bible. But when he saw humans owning other humans as property? He handed down instructions for how to regulate it properly. Clearly he was willing and able to just say "Thou shalt not own another human being as property" but he didn't. Clearly the authors of the Bible wanted to write their god as being cool with slavery, so they did.

Read Martin Luther’s Bondage of the Will. Whenever anyone argues the fallacy that we “have free will,” I reply “sure, look where our ‘free will’ brings us.” Luther taught we are “in bondage to sun and cannot free ourselves…”

J C B great so you know Christianity’s message. But again, I ask, do you know the original and continuing message of the Jews? Do you know what their version of what the messianic age is? And the “world to come” we are working towards? What they say their religion is vs Christianity? The differences? Or do you only know Christianity?

Christians who study are aware of what the Tanakh taught. A real problem is that Judaism changed after 70AD and the multiple beliefs primarily ended with rabbinical Judaism replacing the Temple and those who based their beliefs around the Temple such as the sadduces, etc. Post 70AD saw the rise of the oral law and the sidelining of the written law and beliefs held by keraites, etc. Judaism used to hold multiple interpretations to the prophecies, etc. within the Tanakh which is why Christianity did very well around Jerusalem, Judea, etc. before finally spreading out into the Roman empire primarily through Jewish centres before spreading to the gentiles.

Debunking the historicity of scripture is irrelevant. It has no moral claims to make, being nothing more than an enforcer for extortion, as the practice of capitalism is merely the charging of tribute.

Well Rebecca, I haven't read your book but If I were a non believer in G-d, and I wanted to know who or what G-d was then would I go with your definition as being orthodox or some more liberal definition. The Orthodox perception of "G-d" is that he is a trinity. I wouldn't be too off in saying that 95% of Christians today are Trinitarian and 5% are unitarian. Trinitarians consider themselves unitarians but never question that they could be mathematically challenged. If you want to know about Trinitarianism then I would suggest reading " The Trinity, Christianity's Self Inflicted Wound" and then tell me how anyone could believe in it. So how could we reconcile such diversity so that we don't have such contention as to cause division and even at times, death. That definitely would not look good for the diversity cause. Christians have killed for lesser things in history If you want to make diversity work within the context of Christianity then you have to see your/my or anyone else's beliefs as being flexible. The fact is that the New Testament is filled with fail safe verses that tell the reader that if you don't believe in X, Y and Z then we get eternal hell and torture. Let's see now, Jesus my lord and savior, dying for my sins knowing that he is the only way to the Father or not to believe and spend eternity in Tortureville. I don't know now, let me think, this is tough, I think I'll take Jesus because it's really a no brainer. Jesus= eternal life with God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit as one or maybe not as one in Heaven, or no Jesus and be tossed into the pit of hell. Most people would go with Jesus, the logic being that even if the gospel narrative is false, what do we have to lose? If the gospel narrative is true then we, by choice, choose the safest path but what drives us toward Christianity, the need to be forgiven and the need to know the only path to G-d which we accept as being Jesus and that his blood (sacrifice) made an atonement for our sins that in itself is a pathetic misinformed variation of Temple sacrifice. If we studied the Torah we would understand fully that human sacrifice is an abomination to the G-d of Israel so how can the a "human" be the ultimate perfect sacrifice for all humanity, for all time till kingdom come. It's like saying the ultimate "abomination" is the perfect sacrifice. The only way out of this dilemma is to not make Jesus human and maybe G-d died on the cross albeit in human form but then again can G-d really die ? Accepting things because they make you feel good is not an indicator of truth. There is one lesson that I learned the hard way, the truth more than often makes us sad but like the saying goes if we don't learn from our mistakes we are destined to repeat them. So the million dollar question is this. Is the New Testament the word of G-d or maybe we should find out who G-d is first and that might in itself answer the question since we cannot separate Him from His Word unless we try to make his Word a human being. I mean, I'm just a curious ex Christian or maybe I never was, which in turn would be a compliment.

blumusik brother, he is talking about Judaism. He can and is trying Judaism... That is literally the place we are in. The Roman’s Christianity so successful in its project of anti semitism, that the billions plus who practice it now and even all those who are aware or against the practice of the religion are completely ignorant of the beliefs of the religion it was founded on. It’s quite incredible.

The Trinity is mathematically challenged? I'm assuming you're thinking 1+1+1 does not equal 1. If you read the bible the essence is that they are not 3 independent personages of the divine, but are one multiplying force. As such the maths is 1 to the power of 3. This is 1 x 1 x 1 = 1.

@@BenEddy roman catholicism is not (edited) the only definition of christianity. While your anti-semitic argument ignores the reality of Christianity - there is no anti-semitism within the Christian scriptures.

Unfortunately Satanism is not an option for me but in defense of the angelic being , He was created by the singular creator we unfortunately label as G-d. We find in Bereshit (Genesis)that this G-d created all that exist Gen. 1:31 And God saw all that He had made and found it very good The question we ask is, If this God created everything and he declared everything to be very good and if the angelic being we know as ha satan (the advisory) was also created by the God who created everything then is it not true according to true scripture that Satan is very good and that he really is a faithful servant of G-d. Satan is actually "the father of lies" but the poor guy is just doing his job, get off his back. He has been designated to lie to us . It's not as if he was given a choice like us. Christians were given lies by Satan and in reality are unknowingly true Satanist. I know that this statement is unnerving to Christians but how many Christians actually look into the Tanakh through the lenses of Judaism but only look into their Old Testament through the lenses of the Christian bible called the New Testament. Satanist are people who knowingly or unknowingly promote the lie of Satan. Satanist seem to promote an anti (substitute) Satan, Christianity calls "The Devil", in short, the correct name with a false identity. The devil rules the fantasy nightmare called Hell that Christians use so effectively to frighten people to a false idol named Jesus, who is a member of a corporate trinity seen as three who's as one what. The trinity is really a slick backdoor construct of pagan origin to promote a false idol. If you receive Jesus as LORD and SAVIOR, a designated title only given to the ONE SINGULAR TRUE GOD and no other, then you have received the substitute(anti) god named Jesus. This Jesus is also thought of as messiah (Christ) but nowhere in the Tanakh is G-d the messiah but is 100% human. The truth is that when Christians receive Jesus as LORD and SAVIOR they receive the anti-G-d, when they receive him as messiah they have received the antimessiah or antichrist.
