Today I am going to wander through my most local and frequently visited art stores, The Art Shop! I have talked about this shop in so many of my videos, and today I just had to do a big old tour of their huge warehouse store in Bayswater, Melbourne. The question is, did I buy anything, even though I'm on a low buy year? You'll have to watch to find out! 😂

It's inevitable that in a 40 minute video I am going to make a few mistakes, lol! Piliot Kakuno fountain pens are NOT disposable, and the stand at 25:44 is Couture Creation Alcohol Inks, not Ranger Inks. Let me know if I've made any other errors and I'll add those in here too! 🙃

I've used the porcelain 150 paints from Pebeo. It's an oven bake cerwmic paint. I like it! A little goes a long way. I loved this tour!

Ohh I see! I didn't realise they needed to be baked; I thought they were to paint on top of already-fired ceramics, like white glazed things. Great to know, thank you! 😊

Sssssoooooo happy you finally showed off my favourite art shop in Australia. You can by cheaper online mostly but if you want friendly service and knowledgeable stall that are more than happy to help you, this is the place to go, a family run business I’d told them about you and I’m so happy you got to show this beautiful place off ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Aw thank you! I love to buy my art supplies in person whenever possible, and the pleasure of wandering the aisles full of wonderful supplies is worth a few extra $$, though I've found that The Art Shop can quite often be cheaper than online for certain supplies, usually Derwent. I love The Art Shop, haha! ❤️

It is an awesome store, I've been visiting it for many years and it has expanded significantly. It used to be on the other side of that carpark area in a much smaller space. Low buy is almost impossible in The Art Shop! 😂 I am really, really hoping to find some stores in Greece; we think there are a few down the same street in Athens, near a university. Hoping to find them! 🤞

I’ve been waiting for this review and walk-through. I love the Art Shop. It was so nice to actually see a place I’ve been to. You did a great walk-through and really showcase just what the place has to offer. They are such a lovely company that is family owned. It’s one of my favourite places to go. Nothing is too hard for them to try and get for you.

It's definitely the best Derwent display I've seen! And there are more stores in Melbourne that I haven't filmed in yet...it is going to take a while to get them all. There are an insane amount of art shops here, seemingly! 😂

What a paradise for artists! It’s huge and I could never tell by just looking at the front door. Loved the tour! We have plenty of amazing art supplies shops in my city, but none of them have such a variety of international brands. Why are art supplies so tempting 😂?

It looks fairly innocuous when you first go in, and then it just opens into this gloriously massive warehouse, which takes about an hour to fully walk around (well, I always get stuck in here for ages anyway, haha). They just look so pretty when arranged nicely on shelves and racks. Is it any wonder we can't resist them!

Wow! Amazing art store and what is even more amazing is you managed to leave it with only three things! That must have been hard. How cool and dangerous that you live close by. I always wanted to visit Australia now I want to go just to see this art store. Thanks for the tour of want.

Because of close proximity, I guess it makes it a little easier to only get a few things at a time because I know I can always go back for more and it's only a short drive, lol! One item was on order and I got that a week or so later. 😂 Thank you so much for watching!

Lyra Rembrandt pencils are way underrated. I absolutely love them. They are oil based and probably slightly softer than Polychromos. Well, most of the colours but not all of them. Colours are perfect for portraits and landscapes. There are quite few bright colours but most of them muted. I just adore their greens. And you can’t beat the price for that quantity.

@@BeckyTregear I know the feeling about having too many pencils but still can’t help myself. 😁 I couldn’t resist and bought only 4 green Lyra pencils last year that looked different from my other greens. Loved them so much so went back and got the set. No regrets. 😁 And cause they are not too expensive, I don’t feel bad using them. They are only $2.15 each if I need to replace them. Half the price of the other ones. 😁👍

I need to go back to this store. I went once in 2020. It's probably my closest store too, but I normally go to the Art Shed, just because that's near my archery club and also convenient. The Art Shop also have great customer service. I ordered something online a few years ago and for whatever reason there was no shipping payment option and yet it let me choose home delivery. I think someone dropped the order off on my doorstep (contactless as I didn't see them), on their way home, since it did arrive, but not by post. I haven't forgotten that someone there did that for me, and would happily have paid for postage had they contacted me. I knew the website had a glitch. But it was excellent service nonetheless. Luckily I'm only 15 minutes away from the store, so hopefully I wasn't too far away from that person's drive home. I really want some A3 drawing paper too. I keep adding and deleting things from my Amazon as I battle my head over needing and wanting 🤣

You shall have to go again.😆 I go to The Art Shed sometimes too, but that is definitely much further afield for me. That was probably Nick doing the deliveries; they did this the entire way through the lockdowns and if you were in a 5km range or so, they did free van delivery. Exceptional service!

Becky I just came across your tours accidentally on your channel and I’m now super keen to see them all. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM. U really have put a great deal of detail and ur knowledge of the art supplies is really handy. I’m just a hobbyist but loooove getting advice from accomplished artists as I want my supplies to be of good quality. U r sooo relatable and this makes ur videos super addictive. Thank u. Unfortunately, I don't live near a large art supply store, but I would LOVE to go shopping in one! Is this where artists go after they've died?? It must be heaven! You're so lucky to be able to swatch things in person rather than having to rely on online swatches. Very convenient to live near a place like that. Because you mentioned liking the golden open series and wanting to try the SoFlat line as well, I thought I'd mention the Flashe paint by lefranc burgeouis. It's somewhere between the previously mentioned paints in my opinion. Also sometimes described as acrylic gouache. Didn't see them in this video, so I guess they don't have everything there after all. :)

Haha, heaven definitely has to be a fully stocked art shop (where the supplies are free and regenerate themselves, lol)...this one is pretty close! 😂 I have one pot of that French paint which I actually got from The Art Shop when they did a clearance sale. I guess they weren't big sellers so they didn't order more?

That place looks like heaven. The closest to an art store I’ve ever been to is a Michaels here in the US and the entire store was about as big as the front of this store, so there was very little art stuff.

So excited to watch this video. I shop at the Art Store all the time and now I get to see the actual shop! I've found that since Jackson's have opened their Australian store, the Art Store is even cheaper than them. And they ship really fast!

Ah, it makes me miss going to our Blick art store here in Chicago, I have to work up my nerve to go one day, I'm not the biggest fan of public transportation anymore lol. Hi Becky, what an awesome art supply shop you went to! In my area there is a very tiny over-priced art store. I loved looking at your tour. I look forward to watching you play with the silver and copper paints. I am hoping to get to a Blick art store before the end of summer. It is in Seattle, which is a 2 1/2 hour drive from me. So I need to have a reason why I am going to Seattle so I can justify going to the art store. My older brother is going to spend lunch with whomever can make it to Seattle in June. He lives on the East Coast and will be in Seattle for work.

I remember when I first heard of someone mentioning this store I was so confused because I thought “but which art shop?” 😂 I decided to check out their website (which seems to have been updated to be more mobile friendly since the last time) and wow, you’re right on how competitive the prices are in comparison to other places. Looks like I know where to go the next time I want something from Strathmore!

I was shopping with my eyes as you went along. I need a couple of hard square pastel sticks by faber castell and didn't see the stand are they no longer stocking them I wonder. Last time I went I was restocking my papers so didn't notice them not being there. Thank's for the tour Becky If I was a cat I would roll in this store lol.

These are some of my favorite videos. There's a Jerry's Artarama 2 1/2 hours from here. Dick Blick is even farther away. Michael's & Hobby Lobby here don't have much worth buying. So it's a real delight to see all these cool stores.

Oh that's a long drive! I'm actually quite amazed at how many stores there are in and around Melbourne. It seems to be many more than anywhere else from what people are saying! And there are still plenty I haven't filmed yet - this is an ongoing project; it's going to take me years at this rate! 😂

The Art Shop is the best! I went a few weeks ago to stock up for uni. Just annoying that I live on the other side of the bay. If you're ever in Geelong, there are a few shops worth checking out, as well as 1 in Colac, but nowhere near as cheap as The Art Shop. When I went they didn't have any of the discontinued Prismas.

I put myself on a low buy year too but recently bought a bunch of vintage watercolor palettes on eBay. I'm filling them up with all my paint brands and my goal is to use up my paper and practice every day. I loved the tour. There are no shops like this in my area. Wow, wow, wow!

I love vintage watercolour palettes so much! I buy them if I see them, regardless of low buys, because they're so hard to find. Using up supplies is definitely something I am trying to do as well. It's surprisingly difficult to do! Especially when The Art Shop tempts me with its wares. 😂

Hi! At 13:37 the Pēbēo display shows a variety of their products. The closest display has Porcelaine Paints which you use to paint on porcelain, ceramic, even glass. These you need to heat set in your oven. I've used them and they are okay. On the furthest display at the bottom were Pēbēo's fabric paints. Many people use those for silk painting. You can use those to paint on most fabrics and you use an iron to heat-set them. I use Pēbēo's Setasilk fabric paints to paint on silk ties. They do a good job and are easy to work with. An interesting fact is that Pēbēo was the first company to release acrylic paints way back in the 1950's or 1960's. Pebēo also has a drawing gum which is a watercolor masking fluid that would be very useful separating swatches 😉

Yeah, not many shops in WA that sell good art supplies so online is the best option. I would love to be able to walk in the shop and be able to physically touch and see supplies. Mind you, I would probably spend a lot more money if that was the case. 😁

I give you two thumbs up for this video! I can't tell how much I enjoyed this. I don't have any art shops nearby and order mostly online. I've ordered from The Art Shop a lot and they are great. My son moved to Melbourne last year and when I go down for a visit he will have to take me to all these great art shops you have down there. Have you tried the Winsor and Newton watercolour sticks? I wonder how they compare to the Daniel Smith ones which are fabulous. And I would like to see every art shop possible. Keep these videos coming, lol.

I would just LOVE to browse a shop like that! My city has only a small shop and a big craft store which is not the same kind of thing at all. It made me want to be transported there to do a trolley dash! I could definitely see things that are on my list. The Talens brand, btw, has been around for a long time. In fact the place where I bought them was the only shop I have ever been in that comes close to your one in Melbourne. And that was back in 1987! Art shops really stock a special kind of treasure! Still I do not think they had such a big choice as your shop! You have all those great Australian brands which look so gorgeous. All art materials seem to have shot up in price here, those Derwent sets which you were admiring are really pricy now, even open stock, I was looking at widening out my pastel pencils colours but had second thought when I priced them up! I thought you showed admirable restraint given the wealth of goodies you were surrounded with! I am not sure I would have had that much self control!

It really is a super art shop with such a huge range. I also ordered the new Kuretake Art Nouveau set from them, which arrived after I filmed everything, lol. I'd have included that in the final haul too. The price of everything has gone up, so I'm having to be a bit more savvy when it comes to purchasing items, especially with our upcoming trip to Greece. If I find art stores there though, low buy doesn't count! 🤣

We are very lucky in that there are quite a lot of stores dotted around Melbourne - finding them can be a challenge for sure! Not all are online either.

I get my drawing pads and rainbow pastel paper from this place. Also the single oil pastels as it is a pain trying to get open stock of those. Got some POSCA hard pastel pencils that come up great on black paper. The LYRA brand seems to be at the mid-price range for a lot of types of media.

fascinating seeing how it works as a brick and mortar place. i know i should support my local art supply store more, but online orders are too convenient, and can be done on weekends too. delivery by tuesday if it was in stock. interesting seeing holbein pencils just 'there'. after checking reviews from mostly americans and hearing how hard they are to get for them.

They've had the Holbein pencils in store for maybe a year, and it is through sheer force of will that I have not splurged and bought that 150 box set. I think I need to create a separate savings account for that specific item, so I can purchase it "guilt free" once I have enough funds. But with our upcoming Greece trip and any number of other bills....it's gonna be a while yet! I do enjoy visiting The Art Shop; it seems to change every time I go in, lol.

Every time we go to Victoria, we never pass through Melbourne so I always miss this! Thanks for the tour 😊 Btw, Pilot Kakuno Fountain Pens are not disposable. In fact its a great FP starter as its cheap and the extra fine nib is actually “extra fine”.

Ah I've really been wanting to go to this store, but I don't know if I can hack the ~2.5hrs each way on PT to get there. So many rare to Australia brands! And their prices are so good compared to many shops. My local art supply store (Atelier) has a bit of a smaller, eclectic selection of stock, but the staff are super lovely and helpful, so I do tend to go there if I need basic things or want advice. And I've been going to Melbourne Artist's supplies in Brunswick a bit recently because I won a gift card for them, and I like that store a lot too. They've got some interesting things like HIMI watercolours and gouache. Really enjoying your tours!

@@BeckyTregear Yeah, they awarded it to me as a prize for my grad show work, which maybe also biases me toward them haha. There's also a Melbourne Artist's supplies in Hampton East, near Moorabbin station. I think it's smaller if it's the shop I'm thinking of, haven't been in years. But yeah they've got (though often low in stock I think) the jelly gouache sets. Also pouches of individual paints that look like drinking jelly packs (HIMI ones, I mean) and cute watercolour sets that look like makeup palettes.

Their Eaglemont store is quite a lot bigger than the CBD one I think. My previous tour is there, if you wanted to see if that's a better one to the city store. 🙂

Seniors in the CBD sucks, yeah. The vibes are bad, I'm guessing they get a lot of theft? Because you can't swatch anything and the staff really watch you. Eckersleys is better if you're in the CBD (though this is also the worst of their stores), but the better art supply stores are in the suburbs. I like Melbourne Artist's supplies in Brunswick - there used to be one in the CBD but alas, no more.

I’ll take one of everything, please!!😂 Thank you for this, as being a mainly online shopper it’s nice to see a store I have purchased from. Acrylic inks, the FW ones from Daler Rowney are fabulous to use! Highly pigmented and can be used thickly, or watered down, they are like a watercolour, but a very tiny amount goes a long way. A fellow Australian artist who uses them a lot is Tracy Verdugo, who has a KZfaq channel that you can check out, and having been to many of her workshops I can tell you she is as lovely in person as she appears online. I’ll grab a link to her because she mainly uses the inks and you’ll be able to see how lovely they are.

@@BeckyTregear Yes. They are expensive. And the ones on the shelf look to be the models that have wells in the base and the lid. I like all my wells in the base. Never seen the point of having paint in the lid of a travel palette :)

What are the Neopastels, which are a third thing? I think those are even more pastelly than the Neocolor 1s, lol.

@@BeckyTregear I have the Neopastels. They are oil pastels of high quality. I like to use them together with my Senneliers. The Neopastels are firmer and the Senneliers, being buttery soft, go on top very well. Neopastels have good lightfast ratings. I like them a lot.

cackling because in the US all of our daniel smith watercolors are under lock and key. I visited one art supply shop and practically all watercolors and art markers were locked up. I got so overwhelmed with how many aisles of stuff I'd have to ask a worker to open that I just left without anything and ordered online T_T

Oh that's so annoying! Here at some vintage markets, there are many cabinets of treasures which require a key to unlock the door and having to go ask at the counter. Unless it's something I absolutely must have, my rule is if it's locked away then I'm walking away! 😂

And I repeat the U.K sucks!!! Man I wish we had art shops like this, Hobbycraft doesn't even stock Daniel Smith or Caran D'ache FFS! I think if some of these wonderful art stores came to the UK they would make a killing!! (that was a massive hint BTW if they are watching :) ) wonderful walk through Becky, and I did spot a few things in there I'd love to try also, them clayboards look intriguing indeed! Wouldn't mind having a go at the Aqua copper, looks delicious! Fantastic video! can't wait for more in the future! :D

This one is very much a family owned business, so I don't think they would expand to more than one store. Melbourne would be the equivalent of London, hence where all the art stores tend to be, in the biggest cities. Not sure if Sydney has quite as many stores as Melbourne though, but they do have a few as well. When next I visit, I will see if I can film any up there.

@@BeckyTregear We have a couple of art stores here in Sydney. The Art Scene being the biggest I think then we have The Sydney Art Store, Larry’s Post, Arts Up (family owned - The owner is nice!) and Art Basics then few art stores in Newcastle. I would love to visit Melb stores though!
