Way back, when we were young, I'd had a horrible argument with my girlfriend and I posted a card through her door, containing the immortal lines: "I can't do the talks, like they talk on the TV And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be I can't do everything but I'll do anything for you I can't do anything except be in love with you" Well, we've just had our 25th wedding anniversary. Whenever we hear the song now it always makes us smile. Thank you Mark. You are a marvel.

THE BEST EVER, PERIOD , END OF STORY! Sometimes the music makes me cry , sometimes the lyrics do, and sometimes I’m a sobbing mess when both elements do. And I’m a 62 year old male who has heard this song more than a handful of times… PURE MAGIC from the best ever . I paid $250 to see him on his last tour and would easily pay double to see him again, he still is THAT good.

Rebeka, please please please, "Tunnel of Love" - my favorite song from this band. An immortal composition that begins with a sampling of an overture of the classic uber-emotional vintage Broadway musical "Carousel", and then moves into classic Dire Straits territory with an extended guitar outro that will wear your tear ducts down to shreds and leave you helpless to do anything but listen to it again, again, and again.

Mark Knopfler has made great music for over four decades. Dire Straits lasted a total of 16 years with Mark and John Illsley being the only two members that were in all their iterations. Since going solo in 1996 his band has had a much more cohesive core and released even more music than Dire Straits painted with a broader brush. Worth a listen. Personally waiting for his new stuff to hear what he does as a septagenerian.

mark knopfler lived those lyrics. literally. his voice has a quality that lets his emotions be felt through lyrics with real depth because those lyrics, like all of his songwriting, is in a class by itself! all that and then that guitar singing even more than he is!!! and the band, each part, so in touch to bring their all into the mix, is a package that fulfills a musical yearning in our hearts. they know how to express that like - well - almost like no others in my book. i say that loving lots of music of all kinds, lots and lots, but dire straits take things to top tier to me! i enjoyed it with you :) :) :)

I'm glad you love Dire Straits, I grew up with them in the 80's and God how I loved them. I still find them incredibly cool as a band and so much damn talent everywhere. Sometimes I wonder how it's possible to create music that is so good. It must take a real genius working with other incredibly talented people who all act together to make a miracle. That saxophone, the guitar playing of Mark Knopfler and how the piano takes it over and of course how the music alone tells a story without anyone saying anything. It doesn't get any better. For more of Mark Knopfler, he wrote a good deal of music for various films including "Local Hero" and "The Princess Bride". Check out both of these films, they are unique.

Rebeka thanks for watching this! My family watched this on our T.V. on what I believe was the First Simulcast. Our T.V stations were still only in Mono in this year. - At least in Australia. They had a radio station record the whole performance in Full Stereo. They recorded the video to the T.V. station. Then the two stations synched the sound to the video. So we had our tv with the sound turned off, and the radio sitting next to the t.v. with the radiostations' stereo sound. Dire Straits was pretty good at doing groundbreaking stuff. They did one of the first 3d Computer Music Videos for "Money for nothing."

I think it hurt. I last saw him perform this live in 2019 I think? maybe 2018. I always love seeing that particular guitar come out though. For your next one, I'd suggest "Private Investigations." And don't forget Mark Knopfler's career didn't end with Dire Straits. He has a pretty impressive catalogue of work under his own name too.

I bought their debut album when they exploded onto the scene in 1979 when I was 16. I recommend a reaction to “Twisting by the Pool.” It’s a banger of a song probably recommended by nobody else here. It wasn’t a big hit because they put it out on what’s called an EP (“Extended Play”) album of just 4 songs rather than an LP (“Long Playing”) record. Since you like “Romeo and Juliet,” you probably will like “Skate Away” which also has that slower vibe.

My favorite Dire Straits song! I usually don’t like Mark’s live performances because he changes things up so much from the studio versions, but this one is excellent! BTW, you make it really hard to try and watch Mark! 🙂

I was there that night - Sydney Entertainment Centre, prime seats. It was a hell of a night. I’m going to leave instructions that, when I’m in the Dementia ward, the nurses should play this clip once a day, and for half a dozen minutes I’ll be back in my gilded youth again. It’ll make me feel nineteen, for a while.

I like the Wild West End reference! I know a guy who was the chef for the band while they were touring Australia for the BIA tour, Gus, great guy, he still keeps in touch with John Illsley..

It's a pleasure to watch one of my favourite song according to your lovely reaction. I love this band since my childhood and appreciate youngest generation push it on highlights again. Alchemy's version of "Romeo and Juliet" is, without a doubt the classic version but without sax. "On the night" version is more closer than this one and maybe my favourite. Anyway "Alchemy"and "On the night" concerts are amazing. Thanks again for this moment and even i'm not a big rock fan ususally, a masterpiece still a masterpiece and Dire Straits makes some.

Thank goodness it was Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits that decided to do a song named "Romeo and Juliet" because it took them to do justice to the topic. This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever and was, as it had to be, inspired by a real life event of Mark Knopfler.

Exactly! She used Mark as a "stepstone" for her own career.

Mark Knopfler is the heart and soul of Dire Straits and has had a great solo career. Check out the song "Shangri-La". Gorgeous.

I was wondering why this was so familiar…. I was at that concert. The light reflecting off the guitar. One of the highlights of all the concerts I’ve seen.

In 1984 My Best Friend Kevin Made me a Mix Tape to Carry Back with Me to Alabama. I Had lived in Illinois from 1980 to 1984. It was a Mix of UB 40 and Dire Straits. I met my Wife at Kmart Roebuck Alabama ( Now Gone Forever ) We are Still Together. We married in 1985. Romeo and Juliette is one of our Favorites. Thanks Kevin For that Mix tape. I still Have it and it plays just Fine :)

One of my favorite DS songs. Still have to go with studio version over the live. Some of Mark Knopler’s best lyrics.😢
