Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon was a hot mess, but why did does it fail where other sci-fi films succeed?
Also, apologies for some of the rough editing. It took a lot of work to get this video past the copyright bots.

Directors using "oh a Director's Cut is coming" to justify bad movies is a bad trend that needs to not happen.

The trend was, IMHO; started by The Hobbit movies which deliberately left loose ends in the narrative to compel the people to see the Director's cut. My own little crusade was not to see the director's cut at all; not even pirated; and I haven't seen a single director's cut since. I know they lost just a few bucks per movie; but I'd like to think A GOOD DAMN LOT OF US went the same way and didn't give them the few bucks. Our wallets are the ONLY power we have over them, and we should exercise it.

@@codinghusky5196 Considering the Justice League director's cut was 2 extra hours of pointless padding, info dumps, a stupid amount of slow-mo, and sequel baiting for sequels that Snyder knew well ahead of time were not gonna happen, I have no expectation that Rebel Moon would be any better with a director cut.

All along, the solution to franchise fatigue was to make a franchise no one would get invested in in the first place. Bravo, Zach.

In the case of 300, Snyder directed it and also co-wrote it with Kurt Johnstad and Michael B. Gordon. At least for that movie specifically, he deserves some of the credit for the writing.

Watching Rebel Moon takes me back to my first attempts at writing. As a kid, I made all these same worldbuilding and character mistakes and it took a lot of work, as well as good friends, to figure out my work. And it’s safe to say I’ll avoid the flaws of Rebel Moon with my own sci-fi story.

My largest complaint with Snyder is his incessant desire to write AND direct his films. He cannot exposit to save his life. His characters are usually flat, without gratuitous time to flesh them out (which a superior director needs none). I think that what he needs is a Christopher Nolan-type to write the script and beat him over the head with rejections. Reigning in that creativity allowed him to make his best work, as the scripts are given time to actually demonstrate MOST of what is said.
@thomaswrites
@thomaswrites 2 ай бұрын
I agree. I think he's much better in a cinematographer role than as a writer or director of actors. Man of Steel is one of his better films because he directed it but it was produced by Nolan and written by David S. Goyer.

I'll be honest. The idea of being encouraged to find love and to form a closer bond and motivation in war is a good idea, on paper, not in execution, just on paper.
@thomaswrites
@thomaswrites 15 күн бұрын
Yes, there are even examples of that being done in real-world history (ex. The Spartans). However, you can't have the same character say, "I was taught love is weakness" while also saying, "they encouraged us to find a lover."

Larry Fong Has been his cinematographer the whole time until that Army Of The Dead mess. The thing I like to say, “They aren’t Space Nazis, they are literally Nazi’s IN Space”. I have been saying for a long time that Zack is a visual director that creates a painting in a frame, but what the frames are saying is a total waste of time.

The fact that ive never heard Zack talk about any of these characters he has been supposedly in love with and working for over a decade in any way betond their physical attributes and the most generic one word description if their role is very telling that there will be no more depth with another hoir of footage. Even he has no clue who these characters are.

Director’s Cut is gonna surprise everyone. It’s going to be 45 minutes shorter. Zack Snyder is gonna speed up a good part of the slow motion sequences into normal speed. And the Snyder Cut legend lives on.

That "awesome fight scene" looked pretty terrible to me; too much cutting, hard to tell what's going on, and some of the cuts crossed the frame in a way that made it even harder to follow. At least it was in a terrible movie?

I think the problem with Snyder is that he's not a good writer and storyteller. Also he should have someone stopping him from putting empty pretty pictures and slow motion into everything. Basically, he shouldn't be left to his own devices, because he's not that good. There is a very small set of things he does well, but he's terrible in a long list od things.

Snyder cutting is easy. Just go back to the editing room and insert stuff you've already shot. It's a cheap way to get more audience money without any real work.

You enjoyed the "ehhhhpic" 4 hour empty mess of the justice league?
@thomaswrites

I did, though to be fair a lot of my enjoyment stems from the fact that I couldn't stand the theatrical version. I like the characters, the story, and the action of the Snyder Cut even if it is admittedly bloated in its runtime. Definitely get why its not everyone's cup of tea.

This movie has some of the most useless slow motion scenes, I have ever seen. And they are not short, they are friggin long. And there is lotsa yelling and shouting. I can only imagine the dialogue writing came up even shorter than the crap they managed to keep in. Oh, and I was thinking more " Battle Beyond The Stars " but 7 Samurai, yeah, makes sense.

Snyder is ok, up his own ass and not a great writer. 300 was amazing, I liked Watchmen, Man of Steel was great for me, BvS was ok, his Justice league was good but waaaayyy too long and had some terrible writing. Too much slow motion, too much bad writing, fantastic visuals. Thats him in a nutshell
