Rebel Soldiers Hold the Buffer Zone: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 109)

9 жыл бұрынCaught between Ukrainian government forces and the pro-Russia separatists of the Donetsk People's Republic, the village of Shyrokyne in the Donetsk region has seen on and off fighting for several months. Despite a ceasefire being declared in mid-February, shelling and sniper fire continue to rain down from both sides. Locals are left behind to watch helplessly as food supplies run low.
VICE News follows the 8th Separate Mobile Brigade, a group of pro-Russia rebel soldiers, as they hold their positions at the buffer zones in Shyrokyne. During an intense exchange of fighting, one of their fighters does not make it back alive.

Hard for some and not so much for others. The man yuri is in a tough spot and its fucked how he is condemned to a war zone just because he can't afford to leave. Then you have rich people being born into inheritances of many millions who will never struggle once in their lives. I have been blessed fortunately but still it makes me want to get at some big wigs with my at 15 and take a piece of their pie by force.

Stan Oros 10 times more hate crimes are committed in Russia yearly than in Ukraine (yes, links to human rights organizations' data available to anyone on request) Since 2010 there was not a single case of skinhead murders in Ukraine, while in Russia 20-30 were happening yearly over the same timespan. In the peak year of 2008 over a 100 such murders were committed in Russia.

Stan Oros It's exactly the same kind of morons on both sides of the frontline, in fact many members of the right-wing Ukrainian battalions are from the Donbass as well. This is what led to the civil war - the same extremist bydlo ending up hating each other for being the same as them. Plus, it's an argument about whose oligarchy is worse, more Jewish and more anti-Slavic. But hey, at least on the pro-Russian side they generally stick to the pagan Slavic variety while on the Ukrainian side, the soil is fertile for an actual Nazi nostalgia.

***** The Swastika is an ancient pan-Eurasian sun symbol, and the Kolovrat is a Slavic variation of it. The Black Sun is another, Germanic variation of it. All variations of the Swastika are important in one pagan mythology or other - the Hakenkreuz Swastika in Indian mythologies, for example. But since the Nazis can't really use the Hakenkreuz Swastika, they use other variations like the Kolovrat instead, and when a nosey journo asks them "what is that suspicious symbol on your arm?" they can always troll them by answering "oh it's an ancient pagan symbol don't worry it has totally no relation to Nazism honest lololol." What you're saying is "a swastika is not a swastika a swastika is an important slavic pagan symbol while the swastika is some SS stuff I don't know how you can combine swastikas and SS! Nazi symbolism was part of the gang tattoo culture as it demonstrated an opposition to Communism (firstly), and (secondly) signalled that the wearer/bearer believed he was not subject to the established order. On the other hand, the Nazi tattoos could have been applied without connection to the criminal tattoo culture? Possible, but unlikely. The guy has stars tattooed into his shoulders, which is the mainstay tattoo of a high-ranking criminal in the post-Soviet space.

Their gear is mostly (if not all) Russian, but it's definitely not Ratnik. What they're using mostly consists of Gorka suits, different assault vests, and various Digital Flora camo trousers+jackets by manufacturers not under the firm of Ratnik armor. Sorry for getting nerdy on the topic, just felt like doing a bit of clarification. But for all intents and purposes, regardless of what they're wearing, it's by all means Russian supplied.

Fascinating to see a war so well reported, from both sides. Almost always its reported from one side, be it NATO in Afghanistan, Peshmeger in Iraq, US in vietnam, French in Mali. Really strange feeling to not quite be able to see one side as "the good guys". Whilst I disagree with the DNR on principle, most the people fighting here are fighting for what they believe in, or because they have no other choice.

As you say, the access VICE have achieved to both sides has been impressive, and yes, very unusual. And even with this level of detail and access (15 hours, 109 episodes) it's still quite hard to know what's actually going on behind the scenes (in terms of external influences and orders to these soldiers).

If the NATO had kept its promise of not further expanding towards Russia after East and West Germany were allowed by Gorbatschow to re-unite, none of this would ever have happened. After it was clear that Ukraine was thinking about joining the NATO, its fate was sealed.
