Congrats on your Rebel 300! I was tempted to get one a couple of years ago so I could try out the 300cc thumper and to have a frugal cruiser in the garage. I already have two CB500's in the garage (2013 CB500F and a 2014 CB500X), so I passed on the Rebel 500 because I didn't want another bike with the same engine (nothing wrong with that motor... just needed some variety). When I heard the rumors that the Rebel 1100 was coming, I dropped the money on the deposit immediately! The AT 1100 engine is a real hoot to ride. It has tons of torque everywhere, so you never need to hunt for gears... just twist and GO! Cheers! 👍 --QM

The camera doesn't do it justice... the beam pattern is very bright and very white. The close fill is the only part that bugs me, so I'll definitely be installing a set of Denali D4's on it soon. Then I'll have my own portable sun following me around at night. 😉👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback and the sub, Roger! The Rebel 1100 is a great bike, and the motor is a real hoot to play with around town. The long-distance and highway capabilities will be drastically improved with the addition of some luggage and a decent windscreen. I've done a few upgrades over the past many weeks, but I'm still waiting for the Honda saddlebag mounts and the passenger seat kit to arrive. After that, I'll be attacking the wind problem with a decent touring screen, but the selection is very limited right now. We'll see how it all turns out. Cheers! 👍 --QM

The NC750X would definitely be a better commuter than the Rebel 1100. The NC's upright ergonomics, better suspension, and higher fuel economy make it the better choice as an all-around bike. Thanks for the feedback! I really enjoy the Rebel 1100 so far. I have about 6K miles on it, and both tires are still doing good on tread even with my heavy right hand. My next upgrade will be a new set of rubber... not sure which brand I'll go with, but Michelin is always at the top of my list for my sport and standard bikes. I took the Rebel on a 3200-mile road trip in October from Houston, TX to Annapolis, MD for the @LifeOfBurch meetup. It performed very well over that 6-day trip, despite the almost complete lack of wind protection and relatively short rear suspension travel. Howdy, Thor, and thanks for the feedback! The roads here are very fast, and everyone tends to drive at 10-15 MPH above the posted limits on the highways and surface streets. I try to stay with the flow of traffic, or just a bit faster to maintain my visibility/conspicuity among the cagers. Relative speed/movement creates visibility, and that is much safer on a motorcycle than blending in with the surroundings. Cheers! 👍 --QM

Is there a change to the bars on 2022?

If you're accustomed to naked bikes and the lack of wind protection, then the Rebel isn't too bad. You'll probably need some footpeg extensions (or forward controls) due to your height. The hip and knee angle can be a little cramped for taller riders. I'm only 5'7", so my reach forward to the bars gets a bit uncomfortable after a couple of hours. Your longer reach would probably have you sitting nearly straight up. The original seat needs help, too. I added the AirHawk Cruiser Large cushion to my OEM seat, and that's very comfortable. I upgraded to the Honda "custom forward seat" for running around town (minus the AirHawk), and it works well for shorter trips. I recently rode the Rebel about 200 miles (~3 hrs) to Round Rock, TX with the "custom" seat, and my butt wasn't happy with me after about 2.5 hours... too much weight focused on my tailbone. I have some new Kijima pull-back handlebars and a Daytona Blast Barrier windscreen coming next week, so those should address my immediate issues for touring comfort. I'm also planning to install some adjustable footpeg extensions (and maybe mini-floorboards) later this fall. I'll be sure to share the progress and results with the community. Cheers! 👍 --QM

@@hunterh03 Thanks for the follow-up! You and I are about the same weight, then. I'm about 170 pounds fully-loaded. I've already swapped my mirrors for the CRG Hindsight Lane Splitter mirrors... I made a short video on that, but I haven't posted it yet. You can see a quick cheat sheet on my Instagram page: instagram.com/QuasiMotard . I just reused the existing bar ends and spaced them out with a short stack of stainless-steel 5/8" flat washers. I mounted the CRG's to the factory bar end (it's already 7/8" diameter), and then screwed some longer 5mm hex bolts through the bar ends into the threaded bung in the end of the bars. The flat washers give just enough clearance between the mirror brackets and the throttle tube and grips. I'll try to edit and post that short video today or tomorrow. I ordered several accessories, but they are still on back-order. The Honda "custom forward rider seat" and the "rear solo rack" for the fender should arrive late next week. The saddlebags and supports won't arrive until late April... grrr. Until those items arrive, I'll be backpacking it! Cheers! 👍

I just had a reply from @HunterHeart , and he mentioned that his fuel tank also wiggles around a bit. I suspect that this is "normal" because the bike vibrates a bit, and Honda probably wanted to give some damping for the tank to avoid fuel aeration and agitation. I haven't examined the footpeg protectors yet to see if they are integrated or separate. They appear to be just guards to keep your boots off of the engine cases. I'll check into that and report back later. 👍 --QM

That's a great question! I touched on that topic during my latest ride series up to Annapolis, MD. I posted that video yesterday and talked on the DCT topic here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fL92lqekkp-UmYk.html (as well as a few other spots in the video). The DCT suits the Rebel's personality perfectly, and it's fantastic for relaxed cruising on back roads. The only minor annoyances that I've found for cruising are some minor "bucking" while running on cruise control and sub-optimal gear selection for climbing hills. The combination of driveline lash and the DCT's automatic gear selection can cause some lurching under moderate deceleration on downhill runs. Similarly, the DCT's overzealous upshifts can make the engine feel like it's lugging while climbing uphill at a slower pace. Both of those minor issues can be alleviated by manually shifting to a lower gear or changing the ride mode to keep the engine in a lower gear to prevent "cogging" and lurching. Spritied riding can leave a bit to be desired due to the lack of clutch control and the ability to disengage completely to coast. If Honda put this same engine into a naked bike platform, similar to the CB650R, then I think that I'd prefer it as a manual. Otherwise, the DCT is buttery smooth and effortless to use in 99% of riding chores. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

That's a good question! I haven't toured far enough on my Rebel yet to have an informed opinion. My initial thought is NO... at least not in factory trim. It needs some kind of windscreen, the rear suspension needs adjustment IMMEDIATELY, and the factory seat isn't comfortable enough for an all-day ride. The Rebel's seating position forces the rider's legs to be splayed outward, so that position combined with zero wind deflection for the upper body makes me feel like a flying squirrel in a windtunnel. However, these issues are fixable with minor upgrades. Having said that, I already changed my seat to the Honda "custom forward" seat, and that saddle is more comfortable than the original one. I previously added an AirHawk Cruiser R Large cushion to the original seat ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i51ymsqqmsrNkYE.html ), and that also improved the comfort tremendously. I adjusted the rear shocks to avoid constantly bottoming-out with my 170-pound rider weight (see those videos here: Part 1 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gZ6oks2mydLPcWw.html , and Part 2 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5mjidd6m5_Nqnk.html ). I installed a short windscreen on my Rebel ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbxjpqp6uLCueas.html ) to help push air around my torso, but it's not really suitable for touring. Wind pressure on the chest still quite significant at 70 MPH, so I start feeling muscle pump and hand fatigue after 30-45 minutes on the highway. I'm still shopping for a mid-sized windscreen that will work better for touring but doesn't ruin the naked bike aesthetic. I have also installed my Honda OEM saddlebags and the rear fender rack, so I'm ready to start touring and moto-camping with my Rebel this fall. Ah, good question! That is a white balance card that I use to set color corrections during post-processing in Adobe Premiere. It is a particular shade of gray that is used as a white balance marker that alters the Hue and tone of all the colors. Most cameras don't have a good color balance, so that lets me color match closer to actual tones that are seen by the human eye. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I'm waiting to see who comes out with some straight-back exhausts instead of the up-swept ones. I plan to have panniers on this bike, so the up-swept pipes won't work. I'm hoping for one of the Akrapovič D-shaped homologated slip-on's in black carbon fiber. As long as the midpipe is angled to allow the exhaust to sit low/straight, then the angled "D" shape of the muffler should give plenty of cornering clearance. Is anyone over at Akrapovič ( @myAkrapovic ) listening? I'll be your test pilot! 😉👍 --QM

The latter is correct. The throttle-by-wire senses when you have the throttle closed, so it's effectively in neutral while you're stopped and not moving (throttle closed while decelerating is a different scenario). The DCT won't creep forward like an automatic car transmission because there is no torque converter.. the dual clutches are managed by the computer and are held disengaged while you are stopped. Wheb you close the throttle under deceleration, the clutch is still fully engaged, and the DCT manages the downshifts and engine braking automatically. Cheers! 👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback! I just replied to another comment this morning regarding the DCT's shift timing. The DCT always shifts early at low throttle positions for smooth cruising and low fuel consumption. At higher throttle positions, it will hold the gears longer, and it also downshifts earlier (adaptive based on the previous few seconds of riding behavior). I will be riding it a little harder now that I'm out of the break-in period. I'll be sure to do a few full-throttle roll-on tests from top gear to see how fast it downshifts. Those tests will be done in "standard" mode and "sport" mode from a few different speeds so we can compare the differences in DCT timings. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

The DCT does not engage the clutch until the throttle is opened slightly above idle. You can sit still in "D" (drive) without needing to hold the brakes if you're on flat road, just as if you were in neutral. The DCT doesn't creep like an automatic transmission in a car... the clutch is disengaged when you are stopped and the throttle is closed. 👍 --QM

That's an unfortunate problem with most cruisers. The limited suspension travel and the mid or forward controls (footpeg position) puts the majority of your weight into your seat, and you can't stand up off of the saddle easily. I've been bounced out of the saddle a few times on the Rebel. Those same bumps would have upset the suspension of any of my other bikes just the same, but I could have "jockeyed" by standing up to let my legs/knees absorb some of the jolt. I haven't tuned my rear suspension yet for my riding weight (static sag and rider sag), so there might be a better setting for me... we'll see! 👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback! That is a WhiBal white balance card... it is used for correcting the camera's color during post editing. The color balance will shift depending on ambient lighting and sky tones, so I always try to get a balance reading at the beginning of my recordings. The Rebel 1100's rear suspension is set too soft from the factory, so it has a tendency to bottom-out over highway ripples and larger dips at high speeds. I bumped up my rear suspension from setting #3 to #8, and that seems to ride much better without bottoming out unexpectedly. The Rebel's rear shocks are still very rough, so I'll probably shop for some aftermarket dampers soon. As for which roads to avoid... there are too many to list in Houston! 🤣 I have a catalog of dozens of different routes that I will avoid unless I'm in a car or truck, just because they are so rough that they border on dangerous to ride on motorcycles. If I'm riding my little XT250 with 9 inches of suspension, then I don't really need to plan the routes... just go and bash over whatever I come across. 👍 --QM

This big twin apparently takes a LOT of amps to turn over. I might eventually replace the lead-acid battery with a beefier Lithium battery that has more cranking amps. I wonder if that's why the dealer thought the battery was flat on delivery? It sounds like the battery is just about to croak. If you watch closely when I start it in the morning, the gauges stayed lit, but the backlight seemed to dip out for a fraction of a second on the second rotation... so there's a lot of power draw from the starter motor. 👍 --QM

Thanks for the feeback and for watching! I would definitely purchase the Rebel 1100 again... and still in the DCT version. The manual version is great, but the DCT is well suited to this cruiser layout. However, you should be aware of the Rebel 1100's limitations in terms of its physical layout and its rear suspension compliance. The mid controls can be a bit cramped for taller riders, but they seem to work well for riders under 6' tall. The reach to the handlebars is also a bit long for shorter riders, but it should be manageagle for anyone over 5'2" tall. The Showa rear shocks are under-damped, so the spring preload needs to be increased to avoid bottoming-out. This could be a problem for heavier riders (or when carrying a pillion). The front suspension seems to work well for my weight and riding conditions. Good luck shopping, and I hope that it works out for you! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

The Rebel 1100 could certainly make the trip, but the rider comfort is lacking without a small windscreen and a better seat (or seat pad). I've added an AirHawk seat pad to soften the original seat, and it's tolerable now for 3+ hour rides... before the AirHawk, I was ready to get off around the 2 hour mark. The Rebel's leg/hip position is a bit cramped for riders over the 5' 10" mark (about 33" inseam), so that might also be a problem if you are taller or long-legged. The aftermarket will certainly have some accessories for it soon... forward controls, floorboards, or highway pegs would do wonders for long highway trips. Cheers! 👍 --QM

The Rebel 1100 seems to do very well in the heat so far. I haven't had any issues with heat-soak into my legs or thighs like other big-bore bikes. I have a Yamaha R1 and a Ducati Monster 1100 Evo in the stable as well... both of those bikes cook my legs and dangly bits to well-done in Houston summers. Needless to say, I don't use them as my daily riders or commute bikes for that very reason! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

In its stock form, I don't think I would enjoy riding it for extended periods. A small windscreen and a rear rack are mandatory in my opinion... otherwise you're just fighting to hang on at freeway speeds, and you don't have any way to carry your stuff. My Honda fender rack and new front seat are supposed to be in later this week. We'll see how that helps with the comfort and cargo issues. I also have setback handlebar risers coming on Saturday that might help my short arm reach issues. I'm still searching for the right windscreen... not a fan of the Honda batwing... too big, IMHO. 👍 --QM

Yep, I'm vertically-challenged, too! I'm 5'6" (and a half 🤣) with a 29" inseam. The Rebel 1100's seat is at 27.5", and the bike is very narrow near the tank so it's easy for me to flat-foot on both sides. I had almost forgotten how nice having both feet on the ground to steady the bike in cross winds while sitting at a light... or being able to easily waddle backwards into a parking space. 👍 --QM

No, on the contrary.. the suspension is actually very good over most surfaces. I'll play with the rear preload to see if I can soften the hit over larger bumps. It's difficult to tame rough roads with only 3.7" of travel. --QM

Nope, the Honda owner's manual doesn't list any specifics for suspension tuning... not even how many clicks are available in the rear shocks. It's just trial-and-error... zip-ties help to figure out how much stroke you're using. --QM

The new digital cluster looks fantastic, and it's highly visible in day or night conditions. I'm not sure about your question about "integrated brakes". If you're referring to Honda's CBS (combined braking system), then no... the Rebel 1100 has 2-channel independent ABS, and the front and rear brakes are separate. That's a tough question without knowing more about your physical attributes and whether you're comfortable wrangling the Rebel 1100's 500-lb weight. If you are average height and weight (5' 4" to 6' and under 250 lbs), then the bike should fit you well. Riders taller than 6' usually feel too cramped with the footpeg position. The power is manageable for new-ish riders if you stay in "rain mode" through the learning phase. That makes the throttle less abrupt, and the clutch is somewhat smoother. You can graduate up to "standard" or "sport" mode when you're more comfortable with the power and torque delivery. It's a great machine for riders who already know the basics and have some miles under their belt. I wouldn't recommend the Rebel 1100 to new riders without any experience simply because of the power and weight of the machine. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

That is the traction control (torque control) indicator. I've noticed that it lights up occasionally over big bumps. It almost always lights up under full-throttle acceleration because the rear tire is slipping or the front wheel is lifted up off of the ground. 👍 --QM

The Honda DCT allows you to shift manually if you prefer. The Rebel has 4 different ride modes with varying levels of throttle response and shift timing. I've been riding in "standard" mode during the break-in period, and that makes the computer shift very low/early to keep engine RPM's down. Using higher throttle positions or "sport" mode raises the shift points to be more aggressive. Honda lists the MSRP for the Rebel 1100 manual shift at $9299 USD, and the DCT (automatic) version is $9999 USD. My total price out the door was $11795.17 with all taxes and fees. You shouldn't have much trouble readjusting and learning to ride the Rebel. The biggest differences will be the seating position (lower and more stretched-out than on the XMAX), and the lack of any storage on the Rebel. The power delivery is very smooth and predictable in "standard" or "rain" modes, so it's the same twist-and-go arrangement as a scooter. The Rebel DCT weighs ~100 pounds more than the XMAX, but it carries the weight low and isn't hard to manage even at low speeds. However, the power and handling of the Rebel is in a completely different league than any scooter. It handles like a standard/naked bike (good cornering clearance and stability), and the instant torque that's available at nearly any RPM is totally different experience. The driveline is direct because it has a traditional (geared) transmission and a chain final drive, so power is immediate instead of feeling "laggy" like a scooter's CVT and belt drive. I'm sorry to hear about your son's accident... that's terrible. I hope that he heals and is able to walk again soon. I'm normally a very proactive and defensive rider, but I was hooning around a bit during this ride to get a feel for the new Rebel. Houston traffic is fast and furious, so it's actually more dangerous to ride slow (at or below the speed limit) here than to ride slightly faster than the flow of traffic (usually 10-15+ over the posted limits). Riding and surviving big city traffic requires a different mindset... it forces the rider into predator vs prey, fight or flight mode all the time just to avoid accidents and intentional sabotage by other motorists. I'm a veteran rider with 40 years and 2M+ miles of riding experience, and I had never been down on the street until last October when a road-raging cager intentionally rear-ended me at 80+ mph in highway traffic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qN91f7ClqsvQaJs.html . I'm dealing with the repercussions of that wreck now. I have semi-permanent nerve damage in my cervical & lumbar spine and rotator cuff damage in both shoulders. Yes, there is a spring-loaded adjuster at the bottom-center of the bucket. I haven't looked for any left-right adjustment, but I presume the one at the bottom is for elevation. 👍 --QM

I've been riding for 45+ years, and over 35 years on the street... nearly 2M miles on two wheels! The Rebel 1100 DCT would be a great beginner's bike as long as you're physically able to handle the weight and power of the machine. It's very easy to ride, and it could be compared (somewhat) to a scooter because of its "twist-and-go" riding style. Power delivery in "standard" or "rain" mode is very smooth and tractable at low throttle positions, but it builds very quickly at higher throttle settings. The mid-range torque punch (72 lb-ft at only 4250 RPM) is very potent, and it brings an ear-to-ear grin every time. The Rebel's handling and seating position are more like a standard/naked bike than a typical cruiser, so will also be good for beginners. Most cruisers have limited cornering clearance and a floaty, spongy feel while cornering... not so with the Rebel... it corners very well and handles predictably. I will have a few back road rides and longer highway trips coming up soon. I'll try to do a few videos from a beginner's perspective to show basic operation, riding tips, and other general "livability" issues for the Rebel. Cheers! 👍 --QM

I haven't confirmed it with a fuel-exhaustion run yet, but my estimate was spot-on. My second refuel netted 47.91 MPG, so that would put the total range (dry) at 172.5 miles. I'm sure that the mileage will climb a bit as the bike breaks in and loosens up over the next thousand miles or so. 👍 --QM

My Rebel 1100 is still covered under extended factory warranty, so I'm letting the Honda service centers do the oil changes for warranty purposes. The owner's manual specifies "Pro Honda GN4 10W-30 JASO MA SG", but I've been requesting the semi-sythentic Pro Honda HP4 10W-30 instead (which beats the spec and is more slippery for an efficiency boost). Yes, I always ride with my high beams on during daylight hours. That is a common and recommended practice (taught in MSF courses and listed in the course curriculum) here in the States. Our cagers are very careless and not trained to look for motorcyclists, so smart riders ALWAYS ride with their high beams on during the daytime. We dip to low beams at dusk and dark to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. 👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, the Grip Puppies will fit on any standard 7/8" grips. I replaced my Ryker grips with the ProGrip 714's ( amzn.to/2OGUB4a ) because my OEM grips were wearing down too fast. The OEM grips are a bit too soft and squishy for my taste... the ProGrips last longer and are just as comfortable. 👍 --QM
