This is the first instalment of a series of videos that document the process of a complete business redesign.
In this video I use a stack of prints of my work to find out what I actually stand for as a photographer, find the common theme and what it is that I want to shoot. In the end I came up with a series of portraits. I'm very curious to hear what you think!

Hi! I've been following you for years. Love your work! In this group of images, what I see and really like is the framing of the subjects. Most of them have beautiful framing withing the image, something I've tried with less than stellar results. The diagonal slit of light really stands out as a favorite. Very creative!

i love the work. I think it's challenging when you are good at a whole range of photographic categories. I think the profession expects you to focus in one main area, but that is rarely satisfying to a photographer that enjoys many different areas. I say, keep doing everything. Just come up with your own way of categorizing what you do. And then speak to each category as your heart desires. We can always have multiple portfolios curated around one style of photography. Great work! Stay awesome!

Hi Bert, Your portrait pictures that speaks the most to me are those whith the most "emotion" in the picture. Like for example the women under the shower, the women with the blanket ( for me is that the picture that expresses your "style the most), the woman with the sunglasses besides the wall, the woman in the railway station on the ground, the woman in the bicycle parking @ Leuven, the man with the dog and Lara at the end. From a technical level is see your best work always with a very rich contrast and also the "kadrering" is always very creative.

In my humble opinion, no one can really tell you who you are, just do whatever you feel good about, and the answer will simply follow.

I don't see environmental portraits, but a more artistic portraits were the background plays an important role... They give a certain feeling. All the best with your redesign!

I see editorial work or high end photo journalism. There is a story in most of the photos, in the since of person and environment are interacting. You get sucked into the photos and they're trying to tell us something as viewers. The photos are "a slice of reality", although a beautiful one.

stunning obvs. V static. they don't evoke emotion in me (maybe not supposed to!) make me think of Instagram/catalogues/adverts. beautiful. but not sure what you are trying to say with them. if anything. ?purpose. I'd happily retire my gear if I ever took one nearly as good.

Hi, Bert. Maybe you should have somebody help you with picks or compare your choice and their selection. I would like to see the images sorted chronologically to see some patterns in creation and development, ways of approaching the theme, subject etc. I think there are so many styles and the timeline of these pictures is so wide to pick some general something in them. I've seen some great working with light does not matter if natural or studio. I would be looking for pictures where you show the mastery of light. Can be a broad daylight like picture or dark with only some areas lit.

Thank you, I will definitely get other people into the process later on and talk a bit more about why, when, where and how.

Experience has nothing to do with it. Most of my clients are not even photographers so I value the opinion of a beginner probably even more than the opinion of a pro.

Hello Bert, besides being great images personally I think there is a lack of a common denominator or consistency. The images were rather cris cross. Some were more environmental oriented, some more business portraits. Maybe you can still split this "portfolio" into 2 or 3 topics / sections.

Thanks, I realise that they are a bit all over the place. But I kinda want to be an all over the place photographer ;-)

Hallo Bert (Ik ga door in t Engels). Let me first say I love your work. All great images. The thing that strikes me is they are all posed and the environment plays an important role. But I feel they are not environmental portriats because they backgrouns does not say much about the person. The backgrounds create a lot of atmosphere. I also feel the images are quite modern. the postprocessing and the way they are staged. Just my 10 cents

Thanks Steven. I don't like those over obvious environmental portraits in which the backgrounds are a very obvious part of the story. So I guess I see your observation of the backgrounds creating atmosphere, as a compliment.
