A great hello from a rose lover from Reunion Island. Thank you for mentioning our Island when talking about Bourbon roses. It's only a few years ago that Bourbon roses benefited from a revival and scientific research is being done to identify old roses in old gardens here. Really happy about that. Thank you too for your well done brief history of thoses 4 groups. It's inspiring!

About 20 years a man who was crazy about roses discovered that an old cemetary here in Denver,CO had some really nice old roses but they were being mowed down every year by landscapers. After he convinced the cemetary staff to allow those bushes to grow, he discovered and subsequently identified many, many different roses. Now Fairmount Cemetary boasts the largest collection of heirloom roses west of the Mississippi! I have a rose, given as a shovelful by a neighbor years ago, that has grown into a gorgeous hedge that is about 20’ long by 6’ deep. It blooms only once but it’s truly spectacular. I’ve given it the name Desiree Parmentier based on my best guess from the Fairmount collection but I don’t really know how accurate that is and the local rosarians can’t agree on it. The scent is heavenly but not strong. A lot of dog walkers and baby strollers find their way by during the bloom. Thanks for your information. I’m always trying to learn more.

That's a great success story Kathleen! I've heard a little bit about the rose "rustling" from cemeteries and such in the southern US. I'd love to get down and see the collection. Then off to see the Bermuda mystery roses...

Hi Jason. Did you hear me screaming, YES! YES! My first three roses were Jacques Cartier, Rose du Rescht, and Zephirine Drouhin. I did tons of research. My next rose was Enfant de France, an incredible hybrid perpetual recommended by Pickering. If a rose is great, and not too big, I buy them in multiples. At my new home, I have three Jacques, three Rose du Rescht, Zephirine Drouhin and its incredible sport, Kathleen Harrop. I just ordered Reine de Violettes at your recommendation. I also have Sidonie. And three Little White Pet plants. I have a number of once-bloomers. Constance Spry is amazing, and I have two Madame Hardy. I purchased a Charles DeMills which has now formed FOUR roses. I also have Felicite Parmentier and Desiree Parmentier, a once-blooming gallica that I got at High Country roses. I also have a lot of hybrid musks and polyanthas. Wonderful roses! I must make a comment about David Austin roses. Here, in zone 5b-6a, the most common rose by far is Dr Huey. I'm a master gardener and I am often asked why the rose "turned red". Unfortunately , 90% of the time, the rose was an Austin that was grafted onto Dr. Huey, You have to bury them to China here. Some gardens have five or six. I see them everywhere. It's not a bad rose, but it only blooms once and it's very thorny. David Austin was moving to own root before he passed away, and now his son has not only raised the prices substantially but he has halted the own root program. So that's just a caveat.

Thanks for your comments - and I'm with you about the grafting and rootstock suckers. It's something new rose gardeners should really understand and watch for if they're buying grafted roses.

I made the mistake of not burying my roses this spring. What do you suggest I do? Should I mulch them up really good or hill some dirt around them? Im adding compost around them (it will be cow manure mixed with hay from my dad’s cow) that will bring the soil level up to the graft. If I mulch heavily would it be okay, do you think? I’m in Ohio zone 6a

I have several of these in my yard! Despite an issue with blackspot in my yard generally, I have found Zephirine Drouhin to be wonderful, with few issues. Lovely scent, beautiful color. Not mentioned is one of my favorites, Madame Isaac Periere. It's a bourbon rose with the most shocking magenta blooms and a fragrance strong enough to smell a single rose from ten feet away. It does get a LOT of blackspot for me, but it's worth it!

When i was a child, we lived in a suburban that were nearly surrounded by nypa palm swamp. One day mom and big brother went into the swamp to get some nypa palm fruit for my bro's school project. When they came out, not only they bring home the palm fruit but also a rose plant! A small bush had grown in the swamp. It had pleasant scent, not too strong and lovely peach pink colour. Unfortunately it died after nearly a week. Although we plant it just several feet away from the swamp (you could say our close neighbour was the swamp) it think the microclimate didn't agree with it. The swamp was cool and a shady but our backyard though still cool was very sunny all throughout the day. I never go to see the rose bush in the swamp. Mom didn't replace the rose, better let them live there, she said. But 3 year later, we lost the swamp, thanks to unscrupulous city officials. Gone were exotics birds that used to fly to our windows, the nypa palm that have so much uses, massive king cobras and other unique biodiversity and of course the beautiful rose that mysteriously survived in the swamp.

Hi Jason. I was enjoying this video again. Like you, I love Rose de Rescht - I have three. It's only flaw is that it gets blackspot in my garden. It blooms anyway but.. I started spraying them preemptively with Sulphur. Bonide or Safer will do. I wait for a bit of rain and a temperature no more than 80 degrees and spray them top to bottom (and underneath, which is important) and voila, no blackspot. I did the same with my Bourbons. It works! No blackspot. Every ten days or so.

Hi Jason, this is one of the best videos about re-bloomers. You are right, many of us rose fanciers want more blooms, and more fragrant blooms. And some of us are not interested in the non-old rose scents either. I've been collecting information on them for years. All of the roses you mentioned have been wonderful, in my different gardens, but in Windsor we can't grow the China's and the teas because we don't get enough snow cover. Zephrine Drouhin can be found in Windsor stores again and it sure has a great old rose scent. It becomes somewhat of a climber in out climate too. I was lucky enough to get a Compte de Chambord a couple of years ago and it is pretty hardy here and the scent is unbelievable. Thank you for this list and I am sure many people are keeping it on file for future purchases.

Thanks Anne. Some take more attention than others, but it's generally a winter defoliation and then spray with reduce overwintering spores. The spray might be bordeaux mix or dormant oil/lime sulfur. In spring I do watch for the onset of blackspot and manually defoliate the worst leaves from susceptible varieties. Wettable sulfur spray is fairly tried and true to reduce foliar disease, as is potassium bicarbonate.

Very interesting topic today Jason. I find it curious that after 50 years of nurseries and growers searching and developing the latest and greatest hybrids that so many are actually doing genealogy tracking to rediscover the traditionals. Fifty years ago most cemeteries were surrounded by walls of roses and typically had several privacy hedges throughout to provide those serene walking spaces that have long since disappeared. It is good to see the resurgence of interest in the original flowers that are the very basis for all the different roses available today.🤙

Thanks. It's funny that we need to relearn the same lessons over and over, but it was only a generation ago that David Austin proved the value of some of these older genetics in breeding. And he definitely didn't exhaust all the choices, but really concentrated on just a few parents as the foundations of his breeding program. So to my mind, there are whole sections of the rose family tree that would be great "re-introductions" to the trade both as great garden plants and as inspiration for amateur rose breeders.

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm I think a lot of it is simply human nature. When we are young, we take for granted the wisdom and experience of the elderly until we begin to realize that we too are aging and begin to understand the the wisdom and experiences of those here before us. The knowledge and techniques we have today are the discoveries of the Austins, Kenedys, Perkins, and all those who wanted to find ways to keep their plants strong and healthy, but only keep the "Best" qualities. Unfortunately some of the critical hardiness and longevity were hybridized out of the plants for no thorns, bigger fuller petals, and more preferred fragrances. Of course there are always a few who try to keep reminding us that we need to preserve the originals, but they are less and less as time goes on. The good news is that the wild roses are still all over the world as unruly as ever. We may have lost some of their names, but even the strongest hybrids will eventually revert back to their origins in time. I am a bit unruly myself, so that's probably why I prefer the more traditional roses. Lol I really appreciate and enjoy all of the amazing advancement in horticulture. I use that gained knowledge all the time, but there is just something about planting a plant and letting it be itself. 😉 I will probably let my young roses just grow for a while, see how they develop, and watch what they do naturally. If they need some attention over time (which we know they will) I will begin that training process when needed. Because I am in the tropics, even at 4,600 ft/1,600m, the roses will have a minimal dormant period, so that will be something to watch for and see how they respond. The Cambia finally released a single beautiful flower this week, so only the Queen Elizabeth has not revealed herself yet, but we know that the Queen takes her time, so we will simply wait until she is ready. 🙂 Did I mention that I'm not a very patient person.😆😂🤣🤪 Keep up the good work, but remember to take some to smell the roses and enjoy your family during these summer months. Yes, I know it's your busiest time, but it's also prime time for making memories with your wife and children.😉 Just take a day off here and there, or even a short day now and then enjoy the warm weather because it doesn't hang around very long.🤙

Thank you so much for your excellent videos on the old garden roses. I have been bitten by the antique rose bug lately. I absolutely adore red roses, preferably ones with fragrance. I have recently bought a Rose du Roi, Maggie, Cramoisi Superieur, and Louis Phillipe. I've recently come across Eugene de Beauharnais, Dupuy Jamain, and a newer variety called Dame de Coeur online. I'm running out of space and will have to limit myself soon. I'd be curious if you have any personal experience with any of those 3 varieties and if one is vastly superior to the others. Any input is appreciated.

I wish I could share my stunning rose, which I inherited. So I’ve no idea what it’s species is. It’s a deep dark burgundy, with a real velvet centre. A little untidy as it opens fully if it’s hot, it doesn’t deal well, but the scent! Ohh it’s indescribable, only to say it’s like sticking your nose in heaven. I have lived in my current home for 15 years now. Not a day goes by that I don’t go and bury my nose in her. Her scent far outweighs the Austen roses. It’s definitely not deep secret and all those ones as it doesn’t get that black look, it’s such a rich velvet. I had to regenerate it when I moved in and it started my love affair with scented roses. It has deep thick thorns. With little to no space between them. The foliage is a green/burgundy when new and fades to a nice mid green. Small leaves, and prone to black spot. (Uk) It’s a large, frilly edged bloom. This year her blooms are quite small compared to most years. I’m not sure why. But I’ve yet to smell a rose that is as intoxicating as this one.

Lol. Thanks Steven. I always find it amusing when people debate proper pronunciation of plant names online. I guess that's what you'll get when it's a global audience with all sorts of diverse accents and regional variation. I always take a few "corrections" when I use the more Americanized cle-MAH-tis, which similarly shifts the emphasis the the second vowel sound. Not that there's a definitively right answer in botanical pronunciation, but in my defense the word Damask is related the city Damascus, which has the emphasis on the second syllable in both British and American English.

The roses known as Scots roses at least bear a little bit of namesake, but there are plenty of wild spinosissima roses across the whole of Eurasia, so it's not exclusively from a natively Celtic area. But then the Celts have a lot of geography in their origins too, so not a bad fit.

Hi Elaine. Use www.helpmefind.com/rose/plants.php to search for rose information. It's the best database out there, and it's free (or by voluntary donation) to use. There's no specific time - it all depends on conditions. You can speed things along a bit by deadheading the spent blooms promptly and offering a light feeding of fertilizer. I typically see a turn-around of about 3-4 weeks if the roses are getting the conditions they like.

Yours seems to be have wider leaves, and less shiny. It seems it might be a 'true' portland as in only being a gallica x damask origin. Might you have a different rose to the usual one passed as Jacques Cartier? I actually favour yours! I really love the old european roses, the flowers themselves and the foliage and bush shapes

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm That’s helpful. I’m going to bookmark Mutabilis for the future as a rose I might try. People talk about hothouses for plants. But with weather patterns shifting, I need a chill-house for plants if there is such a word.

How you comparing "jacques Cartier" and "Sidonie" rose? thanks
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm Жыл бұрын
I've only grown Sydonie for 1 year now - but he blooms were fantastic! Very pretty form (to my tastes). It's a bit early for me to compare the overall shrub performance to Jacques Cartier, but so far they seem fairly similar.

I am interested in rose hips. I only know “dog rose” as a hip variety but I have seen folks in other countries (on KZfaq) eating rose hips like berries.

The best hips I've seen for eating (flavor and size) are from rosa rugosa species and hybrids.

You'll still see a couple of them widespread in commerce (like the Bourbon 'Zephirine Drouhin') but most you will have to find in specialty nurseries. Assuming you're in the US, there are loads of good choices: High Country Roses, Rogue Valley Roses, Heirloom Roses, Northland Rosarium, Angel Gardens, some directly from David Austin roses, and Palatine is in Canada, but they ship into the US in spring. I probably left out some other major suppliers (unintentionally), but you get the point: lots of good sources.

Love your videos ! Super info always... do you have any tips on gopher damage/ prevention ? I am using chicken wire and/or gopher baskets and it is slowing growth i think !
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 жыл бұрын
No, I haven't really dealt with gophers. The wire seems like a good approach, but frustrating to use I bet.

Love hearing more about this old roses? I recently visited Freedom Gardens in Ohio, not necessarily an old rose grower but he does have a a good variety of the popular ones. It’s run by Beverly Dobson and (drumroll) Peter Schneider, author of Right Rose, Right place. In the gardens he had this beautiful rose: Ernst Dorell. Are you familiar with that one?
