Can you run it on used engine oil?
@trollforge
@trollforge 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, and no... You need to preheat the oil for it to run on straight used oil. It should run on 50/50 diesel & used oil, but I haven't tried it quite that thick...

@@trollforge think i deleted my original comment . i have 2 siegler heaters burning 100% wmo . sieglers have burn chamber air boosted slightly by the blower fan , so i don't know if it would work w/your coleman . remove the carb screen and leave it out , remove the only part left in carb (outflow metering plunger ?) at 26:12 and carefully make the tiny slot in it a little wider , mostly near the bottom , to allow more outflow , reinstall (make sure it still moves freely) . make an oil pre heater using an empty propane torch cyl w/a water heater thermostat hose clamped to it , and a 60 (100 if needed) watt incandescent bulb , housed in a just large enough insulated box . i used an ammo can lined w/rigid , foil backed insulation to make one of mine . install as close as possible to carb . light heater by pouring about 3 or 4 oz (vienna sausage can full) of diesel into burn chamber , light , then turn the carb on . my oil is water free , screened , and filtered thru a car oil filter before it goes into my 5 gallon tank . burns with no smoke , but burn chamber needs cleaning (dirty , 5 minute job) about every 24 hours (about 5 gallons) of burn time . make sure your carb is able to inflow enough wmo to operate , before modifying the slot in the outflow regulating plunger , as once opened up , it will flow too much fuel oil , and be unusable should you want to switch back to fuel oil .

@@billsmith1770 Thanks for the idea, but I haven't had to do anything but turn the carburettor on, and light, then turn the carburettor off when I'm done in the 6 years since I shot this video... I remember when every garage had a rack for you to leave your WMO, any time of day (or take some away) but they all keep them under lock and key now, so WMO isn't as easy to come by as it once was...

@@trollforge much easier , don't blame you . a few years ago garages in my state were paid 25 cents per gallon for it by recyclers , but now garages have to pay to get rid of it .

Thank you so much for this! I just spent 2 hours trying to put the mechanism back in with the fuel stop pin in place. Eventually I found your video. You encountered the same difficulty but you took just 2 seconds to realise the top of the mechanism opens up to remove and replace the pin! I avoided the embarrassment of calling in a Rayburn engineer and confessing that I'd been tinkering. A big thumbs up from England 👍

I have a Coleman that has about the same size barrel in it but the whole stove is smaller. I used it for several years in a wall tent when hunting in the Rockies. And then switched over to a woodburner but am now thinking about going back to the oil burner. I pulled it out of the shed a few days ago, it was sitting out there for about half a dozen years, and decided to try it in my new 12 x 10 tent. What a sweetheart. Heats it real nice. And runs amazingly well. The only issue I ever had with it was the hole on the inside of the burn barrel got plugged up where it discharges to the barrel. Cleaned it out with a piece of wire and it's been working since.

People are incorrectly calling these things carburetor's, which they are not. They do not mix air with the oil before it goes into the combustion chamber. Fuel flow control unit or fuel metering unit is what they are.
@trollforge

Yes, I agree with you in theory, but in reality carburetor is what Coleman called them, it is their official part designation... and I did mention that in the 1st minute of the video.

Roger Dellerba actually it looks like I meant clockwise to reduce the flow and clockwise looking from the inside to increase the flow... but yes, counterclockwise ot increase the flow.

Our fuel tank is full, I cleaned that carb (video was great help - thanks again), put in new filter, but still not getting any oil into the pot?!! Unit is level. There MUST be a blockage between the carb and the pot (right?). I cleaned the pipe that feeds into the pot (there is a T plunger that I can slide back and forth with my oil stove) but there is T joint about 10 inches up that pipe, and that must be the area where the blockage is (I can't think of anything else?). My next step if to completely remove the carb off the stove and try to clean that feed pipe from where it attaches to the carb to that Tee joint. Any suggestion on best way to do that. Camp has no electricity so compressed air not an option (would a can of compressed air work...type used to blow dirt of keyboards?). Would carb cleaner be enough, would that dissolve carbon build up? Is there flexible pipe cleaner? Where could I buy one if so? Thanks!
@trollforge
@trollforge 7 жыл бұрын
2 thing that I didn't mention, but are always in my burner tool kit are 12" (30 cm) Pipe cleaners from the craft store, and 10-12 " bamboo Shish Kabob skewers. While a keyboard cleaner spray may not have enough force to clear a blockage, it will at least tell you which pipe is blocked. Carb cleaner may well work, but may not be enough for a complete blockage. 12V emergency tire inflation compressors should build enough pressure to clear a blockage in the copper pipe, and the bamboo skewer should do the steel pipe that goes strait into the burner.

these carburetors always give problems and just need a good cleaning though out, if you have a unit you got lucky to find, and its still not blasting out heat remove the carburetor and blast carb cleaner into the tube going into the burn chamber and push a small wire though it and blast it again with carb cleaner and blow it out with compressed air, as they corrode up and you don't get enough oil in, if not at all, these units put out a lot of heat with low oil usage, they cook you out when running right

Why would you have a damper in your stove pipe in all the years this is the first one I have seen you need a barometric damper not damper for a wood stove
@trollforge
@trollforge 2 жыл бұрын
The wood stove damper was put in primarily to stop the wood stove on the other side of the wall from sucking too much air up through the oil stove. The barometric damper I had for this stove disappeared and it took me a couple years to find a replacement, because there was no way I was going to pay the oil furnace guys $90 to come and install one.

@trollforge
@trollforge 6 жыл бұрын
Marc A Gagnon as I believe it is better to be a smart-ass than a dumbass, I'm going to start by saying that it will last 7 months when filled on April first. Now to try to give you the answer you're looking for, I have never let it run "Full Tilt Boogie" for more than an hour, generally 5 gallons of fuel lasts me about 40 hours of runtime. I think.

are u using diseal fuel? can u use used motor oil 2?
@trollforge
@trollforge 7 жыл бұрын
Theoretically yes, BUT: 1) used motor oil is illegal to burn in many places, 2) used motor oil is too thick flow in the winter in Ontario (I don't know about where you are.) 3) used motor oil tends to have too much fine particulate matter to flow through the jet of the carburetor without clogging. Before the EPA got its Granny Panties in a knot, many people had good success with a 1/4" copper line off a flow valve on a reservoir hung above the stove, wrapped a few times around the chimney, and then dripping in to the centre of the top if the stove. You would have to light with diesel then switch. The other option would be a 50/50 mix of diesel / used motor oil and a good filter between the reservoir and the carburetor.

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood. I got this stove 20 odd years ago, when I did, I researched it.Fuel (Furnace) oil had 2 grades, I think they were #1 & #2, but that wasn't something I committed to memory, as they were commonly called Summer Weight, and Winter Weight. Winter is thinner, and more highly refined than Summer, Diesel is thinner, and more highly refined than Winter, Kerosene is thinner, and more highly refined than Diesel, if memory serves.... Winter is what this stove was rated for, Kerosene works wonderfully, Diesel is what I normally run it on, at least until I find time to start playing with Biodiesel.
