In this video I show how I used a new part to rebuild the trim sending unit on my Alpha 1 Gen 2 sterndrive without having to remove the gimbal housing.

Thanks for the video I have been wrestling with the idea of pushing the wires through the hole without removing the whole outdrive. 😮. This is a much better option...😊

I wrestled with the same idea and figured this was a better way. Never had any issues with the trim gauge after the rebuild. Glad the video was helpful.

@fixinstuff unfortunately for me I was able to fix my trim limit switch rebuilding it but my trim sender didn't come back so I'll have to route the new harness through there.. Trim limit was my big problem anyway cuz I had to use the trailer button to trim the motor up ..

Nice job! I'm thinking about doing the same thing to my 05 Chaparral. Question, Was your trim gauge pinned all the way up when it quit working? That's what mine is doing.

Thank you. It was pinned to the top and was erratic when trimming.

Has this repair "stood the test of time"? I am thinking of doing this as the shop just ball parked it at $500.00. Just wondering if it has lasted from 2019 - 2022.

If u could please help me which way does that plastic disk go on correctly I’m a bit confused

Did you ever figure out the right position of the disk? I removed mine to clean up the tracks and I now I can't seem to find the right position. I tried different spots gradually but the trim gauge is pointing all the way up.

@@josht3880 I never figured it out mine was stuck all the way up also and just stopped messing with it once I realized I don't need the trim gauge while towing a tube

@@presleycosta4127 well I figured it from the video. If you look carefully the disk in the video has an indentation pointing forward. Mine was pointing backwards ooopps. Changed it to the same position as the video and voila! Trim sender is back. I use it only for trailering and to remember where I left it after long time parked. En route it's easy to tell if the trim is right or not.

Maybe a dumb question but is there a reason why cutting and splicing is a bad idea ?

salt water and copper wire dont play well

I thought about splicing and using waterproof solder filled heat shrink but went with keeping the wires intact and rebuilding the sensor with new parts.

@@fixinstuff Worst case, you still have the wiring if you needed to do more. I'm in fresh water but feel the same way about splices!

I did. Made it easier. I also used a remote camera to look at the gauge on the dashboard while I was adjusting the unit.

Yes. Easier to do with two people. One to monitor the guage and the other to adjust. Otherwise you'll get tired hoping in and out of the boat like I did.

Great idea using a camera! Maybe I’ll use my wife’s phone and setup FaceTime. I think this is better than the 2 person method since there’s always some delay with one person communicating what they’re seeing.
