The hype about space elevators is (as I understand it anyway) that for rockets the amount of fuel you need to leave Earth's gravity means that the vehicle has to be enormous to carry the weight of its own fuel. The idea of a space elevator (if you had a cable thin enough to not collapse under its own weight but strong enough that the space station at the other end didn't come loose, which we don't) is that a lot of energy is expended building the thing, but after that you can just use electric power to get things in and out of orbit, or even counterweights - stuff comes up, equivalent weight of stuff goes down. It's like building an elevator in a building. Yes, it's quicker and cheaper and easier to just climb the stairs but it uses a lot of energy. If you spend a lot of money and effort building an elevator, each actual journey after that becomes much more energy-efficient.

This is correct, a space elevator would allow us to easily and reliably get things into space with MUCH less energy/fuel usage. This is because it'd let us lift things into orbit using just electricity and without the overhead of a rocket as Strigulino stated. If humanity is to truly conquer space then we need a better way of getting things *into* space
