These Roads We Roam

We complete an engine rebuild on our 1987 4Y Toyota Hiace Engine ourselves. Starting with removing the motor through the bottom of the van. We then send it off to be machined and cleaned before reassembly so we can get back on the road!
The engine rebuild took us around 8 weeks (mostly waiting for parts to arrive) to complete and roughly $3500 in outsourced labour and parts.
See you next episode when we get back to travelling!

Thanks for tuning in mate 🍻 yeah it made for a much simpler removal of the motor since we didn’t have an engine crane. It also allowed us to easily unbolt the transmission without having to remove our cabinetry, bed and floor from the van.

Great job guys! My wife and I have a 1989 hiace . Looking at doing the same thing. Did you rebore the block to get more power? Did the new carby give it more power? Thanks :)
@theseroadsweroam
@theseroadsweroam 7 ай бұрын
Get keen mate, you and your wife are gonna have a cracking time. So we didn’t need to completely rebore the block, we just honed it out 60thou and fit oversized rings. If your block needs it however, I did find another larger oversized set of rings and bearings to save you buying bigger pistons. I don’t believe the rebuild gave us a massive boost in power but more the fuel efficiency. As for the Weber carburettor, I couldn’t speak more highly of it. Since its throats are almost twice the size of stock, it definitely added noticeable power. Especially in the low rpm and when your vacuum advance is one. I’ll flick you a message on insta for more detail 🍻

Great video mate! Looking at rebuilding my 4Y in my 88 hilux. Where did you buy the parts from ? I can only find cheap eBay Chinese crap
@theseroadsweroam
@theseroadsweroam 3 ай бұрын
Honestly mate it’s so hard to find half decent parts these days! Without taking the risk of buying Japanese parts of old vehicles from wreckers, made in china parts are all that’s available online. The best thing you can do is head into an old school independent parts supplier. They’re gonna have the contacts and the ability to hunt down rare spares. Repco parts will work fine for the easy to replace parts like fuel pump, water pump ignition system (distributor, coil…). As for internal parts, if you have original Japanese look into getting them machined first rather than replaced eg. crank shaft, cam shaft block and rods. The blokes that machined the block and head were also able to hunt down American made piston rings and hydraulic lifters, again, whoever you get to machine your internal parts are gonna be in the know for better quality parts in that department too

Yeah I’d love to help! Do you know what motor is in your van? I ask because a stock 2004 vehicle would have EFI not a Carby

If you look in the owners manual, check if your engine code is 2AZ-FE It might also be stamped on the engine block or compliance plate

Yeah awesome! Right well if it has the original Japanese Toyota carby and it’s giving you any issues, I highly recommend getting it rebuilt with new jets, needles and seats. I went down the path of replacing it with a Chinese made replica carby and it was a huge piece of sh!t. If you’re looking for a power upgrade though, spend the money on a Weber Dgav 32/36 carby which is the one i use. It will massively increase your low end power and give the whole throttle a better feeling power response without affecting fuel consumption. It also removes a lot of the overly complicated emission control systems making it more reliable. Only downside over the stock carb is the Weber does not have a fuel cut solenoid so to prevent the motor running on you will need to turn the engine off in reverse gear for an auto, or stall it out in 5th gear for a manual. Let me know if you have any other questions or want me to go further in depth 😄🍻

Your Van are very nice and excellent work filming very well. your machinal guy very nice to you helpful. My van Motor may gone sooner, Hard to start cold early morning, black smoke at back exhaust only early morning, black marks on the driveway spot. Oil level still full and water no leaks, Too much fuel goes in engine, may black smoke, only on the driveway as spot black marks , NO White Smoke my only 110k km low 1996 model. Or do need new fuel regulator spare parts? Engine still run smooth. Should stop driving now on. Machinal need to checks. What cost your machinal to rebuild motor like yours, how many hours to do rebuilt motor. I seen too many brand new Cylinder heads bare motor on the eBay?

Yeah I’m very lucky to have a father with mechanical knowledge. Made it an easy decision to attempt the rebuild myself. As for your van, black smoke would definitely indicate a rich fuel mixture. Assuming your van has fuel injection, maybe it’s cold start system is increasing the fuel rate to much, cause an over rich mixture cold start. Our whole rebuild, cost us ~$3500 including a bunch of new parts and machining. I’d recommend taking your head and block to a workshop and getting them to check if it can be decked and bored as anything you buy on eBay with be cheap made in china rubbish that won’t last

Mechanical guy told me engine running fine and easy start, black smoke still on driveway marks. Yes you are right my van rich fuel mixture too much, I smell it from exhaust. I booked my another local mechanical already for next week Tuesday, if he able to fix or not? He does service old cars with Carburettor . Can you please ask your dad, which spare parts I need to replace for fuel rich mixture, Do I have to buy new fuel regular pressure Or should I buy brand new Carburettor rebuilt from eBay seller must be from Australian. Perfect, just wish you also cleaned up and serviced the transmission. They may say 0 maintenance from factory assembly but like the differential gear oil, they need their oil to be replaced every 15-20 years. Along with cleaning the shrapnel magnets. The magnets could also be replaced or recharged.

Hey mate, yeah after cleaning the engine up and slapping the two part together it did look a bit unloved. But rest assured i’ve serviced the tranny every 12 months just to make sure it’s turning over right, being an auto I like to make sure the oil is always fresh and pan valves are clean. Yet to find any metal in it so he’s turning over beautifully. Thanks for watching, cheers 🍻

@@theseroadsweroam Awesome, cheers mate! A great wall wingle 5 has this engine with fuel injection, dubbed 4Y-E. Same stock engine, with multi-point injection intake manifold at the same position. So larger parts source. I will be changing mine to a carburetor for easier fuel swapping and decoupling as much electrical from my combustion cycle.

Yeah right, well I guess they still make 4Y motors in china now for use in forklifts because of their ability to run LPG so makes sense GW is onto it. I love my carbys personally, grew up on dirt bikes so been around them more. Only thing I’d want to look into changing is the electric distributor ignition system that came out on the 3y engine of the time but that’s more money

Why not put V6 Commodore Engine much stronger, company doing at Moree NSW, Van need new metal bracket, new petrol pump fit back tank, new wirings kits, Cost approx. $7000 Dollars Approx., plus delivery van to Moree and return van back to you, but Van need new BLUE SLIP, New different Motor, Registration Office have to Approve and Reweight Van as KG. OR Electric Motor, run by Batteries Electric Vehicle, No service needs for 50k km no petrol or no oil needs save a lot. Van old 19th century machinal has to pull all out and install 21st century Electric Motor in.
@theseroadsweroam
@theseroadsweroam 20 күн бұрын
I have seen these vans with ecotech commodore motors in them, however our van was built to have this motor in it and the process of an engine swap was not a viable option for us as we wanted to be back on the road ASAP. Also for us, the cost of an engine swap, petrol or electric would cost more than what the vehicle is worth.
