Rebuilding the coaster brake hub from my old bicycle

I'm finally fixing up my favourite Union bicycle. It's not something vintage or particular special, but I just love the riding position on this bike. So in this video I'm looking inside the KT Histop coaster break hub that isn't running all that well. It's a bit of a messy job, lots of sticky black grease. But in the end I got it all working again :)

Very good video quality. It's much better than the rest. People don't put enough effort. How can anyone learn? But like I have stated, I like how you demonstrate every detail to repair the bike. Again, this is a very useful video.👍

When everything is apart, completely clean old grease and dirt with a solvent / WD-40. Then, rebuild a clean assembly with new grease.

FWIW, the guts from a Shimano cb-e110 will fit in a KT HiStop; the hub has the same bore and the Shimano stuff is a bit more stern than the KT hardware. Unfortunately, the clutch spring is the Achilles heel in both hubs. (they're essentially the same design, both more or less Bendix copies; shimano has the cool asterisk-pattern attachment point for the brake arm though.... and again, the innards are made of more robust metal.

When the chaincase bracket and the chain tensioner are between the frame and the hub, the reaction arm might be clear of the chainstay. Thanks for this video. Ive never taken a coaster brake apart yet.

The wheel was installed incorrectly. I will find this out later in the next video. This is also the reason the bracket for the reaction arm is no longer fitting.

You should have cleaned the old black grease out before putting it back together with new lithium grease. You should never mix greases.

That black grease is nasty stuff. And I think I should have used sodium grease instead of lithium, I believe it is more heat resistant.

You can usually mix different greases if they have the same metallic soap base. For example: lithium, (most common) calcium, &sodium.

It's o.k. But I really should have a different type of grease. Something a bit more heat resistant. Since I live in a flat county I don't expect any problems.

@@RolingRandom I've found Mobile 1 synthetic grease to be the best. It protects parts the longest before you need to clean and reapply.

Are all coaster brakes interchangeable? I got 2 broken about 28 inch wheels. One needs 8 spokes, the other wont turn. Can I use the parts of both to make one good wheel? I dont know it the wheels have the exact same diameter.

I don't think they are interchangeable, but the design between brand is similar. Perhaps you can use some spokes from one wheel to fix the other :)

If both wheels have the same number of spokes you should be able to exchange the brakes. Most bike wheels have 36 spokes. You may still have a problem with sprockets or width as our host did in this video.

No man …. I’m a pro bike mechanic, there’s nothing wrong with this tutorial, it’s very natural and learning from imperfect approaches is a useful perspective

@@austingode I agree; a singlespeed coaster hub is a great place for neophyte home mechanics to start learning about bicycle maintenance/repair and in the case of a KT HiStop, the stakes are very low. This guy's approach to rebuilding his hub could show other rookies how easy it is to dive in, even if you're unsure of yourself.... i think this video demystifies the process, even if the missteps are recorded along with the proper procedures.
