For my Holden 308 rebuild, I decided to restore the stock oil pump, since it seemed to be working just fine before I tore the engine down. I've never done this before, but here's how I approached the oil pump rebuild, including stripping it down, testing a few measurements, refacing the oil pump body, cleaning, and reassembling. It's not good to go… just waiting for the 308 assembly to begin.

You did more work on the oil pump than most people would honestly well done! And good move sticking with standard volume over hi volume.

Thanks for the vote of confidence 😁. If I'm overdoing anything, at least I'm learning something 😉.

Any mods that allow better flow on these is ALWAYS USEFUL (Flow, not pressure, as that isnt possible by any means on these other than tightening up the bearing clearances, cam bearings particularly, and sleeving lifter bores etc) The relief valve mod is possibly the least important as it only changes the max psi before the valve opens, and lets face it, you are hardly ever running a street car Holden at max pump pressure, and even the stock 60/65psi is way enough for mild 308 RPMs) Yes that valve at 2:40 is the filter bypass. Good job, you are doing all the right things

Hi. Fishing around on youtube, I accidently came across your 308 rebuild. Not sure if you've fired the engine up yet, but I have built a few 308's myself and there is a much better way of priming that particular oil pump if you're interested. First of all, fill your oil filter with oil to the top and obviously stand it up. Pop in the two bolts that are hindered by the filter into the oil pump. Now with those bolts in their respective locations in the pump, screw the oil pump onto the filter. Now with everything still upright, fill the oil pump with oil and with a screwdriver, turn the pump gears as you are filling so that the whole pump is packed full of engine oil. Once complete, use a screwdriver to line up your oil pump tab to correspond to the drive shaft on the block. With the block on the engine stand, rotate the block to a position where the oil pump can mate at vertical to the mounting surface so that no oil is lost. You have already installed the two bolts tucked in behind the filter. Now just pop the other two in and tighten up. (dont forget gaskets). Now when you fire the engine for the first time, not only will the engine receive oil immediately, but the pump will prime itself in the process. Hope this is understandable and helps you out. Cheers

No worries. If pump gears are in pristine condition, method works. Forgot to mention, if using this process, the oil pump is the very last item fitted to the engine just before installing into the vehicle as once bolted to the block, the engine cant be rotated upside down anymore as oil will escape from the pump and you'll have to start over again. Checked out your other youtube vids now as well. Hope everything is proceeding to plan for you. Looks great and brings back fond memories. Good Luck.

Attention to detail is important with a Holden V8 oil pump. Looking at the one you have here it looks like a high volume replacement. Originally all the oil pump used to be an aluminum body and it would be a rare sight to find one today as they wore out quite quickly and caused other issues in the lifter camshaft area. I don't think the small pumps are still available anymore so just use a high volume. Dont mess around with pressure springs as if it is using a minimum 20 weight oil it will be fine. That is of course the clearance between the pump housing and gear tips is still in spec. The manual will have the measurement you only need feeler gauges to check. To much clearance here will cause a problem. Filling it with petroleum jelly really isn't something I would do with a Holden V8 but on certain other V8 engines it is important as they wont prime otherwise and will need the engine removed to sort out Mopar is usually a problem. The thing is it will settle out in spots that don't flush say inside lifters and dead end oil galleries. It never really goes away it just flushes around until it sits in the oil pan. Holden V8 I would just fill the oil filter pre start up. Just remove the coil wire for first start crank until it achieves oil pressure it shouldn't take very long. A bit of pure trivia My uncle bought a HT with one of the very first Holden V8's it had an alloy oil pump that used the same size gears as the Holden 6 It was recalled when it was about 4 months old for an engine replacement and one of the few things that were changed was the size of the oil pump as many had failed due to them being to small volume wise causing excessive wear throughout. A final note if you are rebuilding a Holden V8 they use a fiber rear main seal. What ever you do I would strongly recommend getting a decent rear main seal from somewhere like Chev off road and marine as the ones in the rebuild kits used to be to small and would ALWAYS leak. There is quite a procedure to setting a rear main for one of these engines they really need to be bedded in properly. Nothing worse than having to strip a rebuilt engine to replace a seal that shouldn't have even been in the kit as it was to small. I think COME still has a video somewhere describing the job.

Cool, and I'm curious... What features do you see that tell you it's a high volume replacement? I didn't notice any differences between the pump and the images and specs in the workshop manual I have for the HQ V8.

@@staceonwheels The longer than standard relief valve spring is normal for those as is an Iron Housing. If it's a HQ engine I remember my fathers late build HQ having an alloy oil pump 253 that he replaced after about 4 years due to wear. I think they were changed later on red motor build wise. The real tell for a high volume pump is the gear width but I cant remember what it was. Sorry. Memory of exact details are starting to get a bit hazy now but If you can put a ruler on a known high volume pump and measure the width of the housing it will tell the difference. It was a normal thing to replace these with a high volume unit as they suffered from excessive wear in the valve train and lifter area due to low oil flow and soft camshafts and lifters. It may have had a standard volume pump installed over its previous life but it would have definitely been replaced. Because they are external its an easy job to do and doesn't take long. Cheers

Brilliant. I love learning all this. I'll see what I can find out anyway. Regardless, it's the oil pump I'll be using initially anyway.

That oil pump will be fine, preferably fill it with Moreys engine oil additive before initial start up. I have used it for an additive in all my vehicles for 40 years and have assembled countless engines with it in rebuilds in the workshops I have owned. Once the 308 is run in, start adding a small amount of Moreys at each oil change. All the best Steve. I have no affiliation with Moreys, I have just had wonderful success with it😊

that might be a jp pump i'm sure 308 and 253 pumps were alloy from factory

later 5 litre /304 ones were, i believe, cast iron as per a JP one. Later OEM pumps could possibly even be a JP item as i cant see any variation bwtween them.

I can't see anything in the HQ workshop manual about what they're made of. But if the one I have is a JP, then it pretty much is identical to the pictures in the manual. I have a brains trust I can consult with...
