Generally speaking marking the coldests days of the year with a festival to keep up spirits is just naturally something people would like to do. Fun fact, some countries' modern names for Christmas still carry names of pagan dieties. For example in Eastern Europe Christmas is referred to as "Koleda" which seems to also have been the name of a prominent god of harvest, which again tends to be celebrated in winter.
